The AIMPRESS initiative is based on regional cooperation while being also positioned at the forefront of environmental and operational advancements within the Adriatic-Ionian maritime sector, aligning its objectives with Priority Axis 3 of the Interreg VI-B IPA Adriatic Ionian Cooperation Programme 2021- 2027. AIMPRESS is actually dedicated to addressing Specific Objective 3.1, which emphasizes the strengthening of a carbon-neutral mobility in the Adriatic-Ionian region. Central to AIMPRESS's strategy are two fundamental objectives: (i) to enhance the environmental performance, and (ii) to boost energy efficiency of ports within the Adriatic-Ionian maritime sector, fostering a network of technologically progressive and environmentally conscious ports. AIMPRESS aims to achieve these by developing, testing, assessing, and promoting innovative technologies, sustainable practices and circular solutions in port systems by virtualizing and building on their existing infrastructures. Within this context, AIMPRESS targets to significant reduction of GHGs and increase of EE in the main pilot case (Port of Ancona) and the follower-up cases (Port of Split & AD Marina Bar). The AIMPRESS consortium embodies a collaborative and interregional framework, encapsulating a diverse array of stakeholders from across the eligible regions. This approach is underscored by the formation of a consortium, combining diverse expertise and resources from academic, scientific, and maritime sectors to innovate sustainable solutions. The strategic amalgamation of partners like the highly experienced educational institutions TUC and UNIVPM, along with the SDEWES Centre, port authorities, and specialists like ENOVA and CLEN, ensures a rich tapestry of knowledge, catering to various facets of the project from digitalization to sustainable energy technologies. This collective effort is instrumental in deploying innovative solutions that include the digitalization, virtualization and simulation of RES tailored to the maritime context, and the application of Digital Shadow technology for operational optimization, and the implementation of a specialised AI-driven Energy Management System (EMS). The AIMPRESS project will deliver pivotal outputs, including a Comprehensive Green Smart Ports Roadmap, establishing a strategic path towards integrating AI and RES for sustainable port operations. The creation of the AIMPRESS Transnational Network, uniting eleven organizations, will foster unparalleled collaboration and knowledge exchange. A transnational approach is imperative due to the interconnected nature of maritime operations and environmental challenges that transcend national boundaries. Also, the Joint Training and Upskilling Strategy will further ensure the project's sustainability by equipping port staff with necessary skills. Beneficiaries extend from port authorities and maritime operators, who will see direct enhancements in operations, to regional communities, which will benefit from improved environmental standards and economic opportunities, showcasing the transformative potential of collaborative innovation in maritime infrastructure. In adherence to the principles of sustainable development and the "do no significant harm" directive, the AIMPRESS initiative seeks to harmonize technological advancements with sustainable development. This approach not only ensures compliance with the key goals of the IPA ADRION Programme but also resonates with the global imperative for sustainable maritime practices. The project's commitment to innovation and sustainability positions it as a catalyst for transformative change, fostering a maritime sector that is both economically feasible and environmentally resilient. AIMPRESS takes a broad, innovative scope by aiming to support and enhance the environmental performance and energy efficiency for low carbon port systems for the entire port energy-related infrastructures. The project's ambition to create smarter and greener ports through collaborative efforts and technological innovation aligns with the overarching goals of the EU Strategy for the Adriatic and Ionian Region (EUSAIR), which seeks to promote blue growth, environmental quality, and sustainable tourism within the region. Therefore, AIMPRESS addresses a critical aspect of maritime operations that is often overlooked, and dersires to strengthen the role of the Adriatic-Ionian transport sector within the upcoming TEN-T policy. Strategically, AIMPRESS has significant value as it promotes environmental maritime sustainability and operational efficiency across in the ADRION region. By building upon existing infrastructures, it also demonstrates a commitment to cost-effectiveness, minimizing the need for new infrastructure, thus making efficient use of what is already installed. This approach not only saves resources but also shortens the implementation timeline, allowing immediate benefits through the proposed solutions.

Actual Achievements (EN):

The AIMPRESS project is advancing well toward its purpose of enhancing environmental protection and energy efficiency in the Adriatic-Ionian ports. The project succeeds in large part because various partners from the ADRION area work together across borders; these partners are universities, research centers, port officials, and certain private companies. The Technical University of Crete is in charge of the technological and digital framework development, and the basic work is going smoothly, with help from the SDEWES Centre (WP1). SDEWES, in collaboration with TUC, have developed the first two Deliverables of the project that highlight and demonstrate the Cold-Ironing and the PV & Storage Frameworks. These deliverables had contribution from the whole consortium and have been successfully uploaded and submitted on 10th of March, 2025. The Port of Ancona (ADSPMAC) is the project's main pilot case and has shown strong support by offering crucial energy data and cold-ironing related timeseris. This data is vital for making the virtual models and the Digital Shadow concept. TUC, SDEWES, UNIVPM, and ADSPMAC are working together through meetings to improve plans for using these ideas, making sure they fit what Ancona already has and what it will require later. Although the pilot virtual demonstrations and impact evaluations are planned to begin later, the careful planning by UNIVPM is a notable success. The UNIVPM team has now shared complete planning documents that describe the ways the AIMPRESS solutions' environmental effects and working performance will be measured. To make sure these answers can be expanded and copied successfully, plans are also being created for the follower ports of Split (Port of Split Authority - PSA) and AD Marina Bar (AD MB). It projected that a WP2 start meeting should occur to combine these methods in the upcoming months. The SDEWES Centre's capacity building and dissemination (Work Package 3) is really picking up speed now. The project's official website went live early and TUC actively keeps it updated with fresh content. After the first setup by TUC, the main social media channels are running now to get more people to see and be a part. The project's collaborators designed and presented thorough strategies regarding essential activities such as Port Staff Training (Activity 3. 1, overseen by UNIVPM), Impact Maximisation & Networking (Activity 3. 3, overseen by SDEWES, with ADSPMAC managing its initial deliverable), and the Public Awareness Campaign (Activity 3. 4, overseen by PSA, with the University of Belgrade - FTMUB managing the campaign plan deliverable). We should note UNIVPM is pushing ahead with the Port Staff Training plan by performing needs assessments and creating a curriculum that is modular and seeing about professional accreditation for the training offered in Ancona. Moreover, the project expects to have a large global impact by participating in the SDEWES 2025 conference in Dubrovnik. It will showcase a special AIMPRESS session, a public workshop, and also the project's 3rd General Assembly meeting, offering a useful place for sharing knowledge and making connections. Last but not least, PSA is now actively contributing to the dissemination of the project showing extraordinary effort and achieving promising results through the active upload of material through the project website and social media channels. The improvements and accomplishments of AIMPRESS are basically because of how it is set up to be collaborative and transnational. (EN) | Clean Energy has performed a full environmental study for the air quality monitoring of the Elefsina port, which is one of the busiest ports in Greece in goods transport. (EN), COASTENERGY – Blue Energy in ports and coastal urban areas (EN) | The AIMPRESS project will utilise the previous activities of the COASTENERGY project in Italy and Croatia which were focused on investigation of the blue energy potential on the whole Adriatic area with specific focus on the ports. The synergies will be achieved by maximisation of the utilisation of clean and CO2 emissions free energy sources in ports by using novel technologies and transferring of the project knowledge to additional countries and areas.
