Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

    • EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The EUSAIR acknowledges the urgent issue of riverine litter and its harmful effects on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Recognising the importance of sustainable development, EUSAIR considers addressing riverine litter pollution a vital aspect of its environmental objectives. The strategy aims to foster cross-border collaboration among participating countries to combat this challenge effectively. Through promoting cooperation, sharing best practices, and implementing joint initiatives, EUSAIR endeavours to reduce litter inflow into rivers, preventing its entry into the marine environment. By implementing targeted actions and coordinating efforts, EUSAIR assumes a crucial role in preserving the pristine beauty and ecological health of the Adriatic and Ionian Seas for future generations. Within this framework, TETHYS4ADRION will develop a transnational approach to protect and restore rivers from plastic pollution, working towards reducing litter influxes into the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. This initiative is essential for sustainable development in the region and aims to enhance coordination and cooperation between EU countries and accession countries within the region. By focusing on riverine litter pollution and riverine plastic pollution, TETHYS4ADRION serves as a catalyst for achieving these goals.
    • EuropeanGreenDeal The European Green Deal sets ambitious objectives to drive the transition towards a clean, circular economy, combat climate change, reverse biodiversity loss, and reduce pollution. TETHYS4ADRION, in alignment with these goals, will take concrete actions to address these pressing challenges. One of the project’s key focuses is mobilising research and innovation in riverine litter, riverine plastic litter, and freshwater ecosystems. By leveraging scientific advancements, TETHYS4ADRION aims to deepen our understanding of these issues and develop effective solutions to combat plastic pollution. The project can pave the way for more efficient and impactful interventions by identifying specific areas of concern. Furthermore, TETHYS4ADRION seeks to test and validate solutions for zero plastic pollution while promoting blue and circular economy principles. By exploring innovative approaches, the project aims to contribute to developing effective strategies to tackle plastic pollution and promote sustainable resource management. Preserving and restoring riverine ecosystems is a significant objective of the project. Importantly, TETHYS4ADRION aligns with the Zero Pollution Action Plan of the European Green Deal. It aims to contribute significantly to several targets of the Action Plan, including a 50% reduction in plastic litter at sea and a 30% reduction in microplastics released into the environment. Additionally, the project aims to make strides in reducing total waste generation and residual municipal waste by 50%. Adhering to the zero-pollution action hierarchy, TETHYS4ADRION prioritises pollution prevention at the source as the primary strategy. Where complete prevention is not yet feasible, minimising litter pollution is emphasised. Finally, the project recognises the importance of remediation when pollution has already occurred, taking comprehensive measures to mitigate its impacts.
    • Other The EU Circular Economy Action Plan, the Plastics Strategy and Single-Use Plastics Directive lie at the heart of the TETHYS4ADRION project. All project actions directly address these policies, considering that riverine plastic pollution will be used to tap upon topics such as zero plastic pollution in riverine systems, the interconnection of land-based and sea-based activities and the source-to-sink decision-making model. TETHYS4ADRION monitoring actions will enhance knowledge of the effects of plastic pollution. In contrast, the prevention, mitigation and restoration actions will provide new insights for a paradigm shift in how we use plastics, thus paving the way for strengthened implementation of the aforementioned policies by promoting best practices and concerted actions.
    • Other The TETHYS4ADRION project will be crucial in strengthening interactions between the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and the Water Framework Directive (WFD). The project aims to enhance coordination and cooperation between these two important frameworks by aligning the objectives and activities of both directives. Firstly, TETHYS4ADRION will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and expertise between stakeholders involved in implementing the MSFD and WFD. This will create opportunities for dialogue, information sharing, and mutual learning, fostering a better understanding of the interconnections and synergies between the two directives. Secondly, the project will work towards harmonising monitoring and assessment methodologies used under the MSFD and WFD. By adopting a common approach, TETHYS4ADRION will facilitate the integration of data and information, allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of the status and pressures on marine and freshwater ecosystems. This harmonisation will contribute to a more efficient and streamlined implementation process for both directives. Moreover, TETHYS4ADRION will support the development of approaches that address the shared challenges and objectives of the MSFD and WFD. By identifying common priorities and promoting integrated approaches, the project will encourage synergistic measures to achieve the environmental objectives set by both directives. By strengthening interactions between the MSFD and WFD, TETHYS4ADRION aims to contribute to the overall coherence and effectiveness of these directives, leading to improved management, protection, and restoration of marine and freshwater environments in the Adriatic-Ionian region.
    • Other TETHYS4ADRION project will significantly contribute to the enhanced implementation of the Barcelona Convention Regional Plan for Marine Litter Management in the Mediterranean. The project’s activities align closely with the objectives and principles of the Regional Plan, which aims to address the growing challenge of marine litter in the Mediterranean Sea. Firstly, TETHYS4ADRION will generate valuable data and knowledge on riverine litter and riverine plastic pollution, filling critical gaps in understanding marine litter sources and pathways in the region. This information will provide a solid scientific basis for implementing targeted actions and measures outlined in the Regional Plan. To that end, the project will pilot the riverine litter monitoring guidelines developed within the ECAP process of the Barcelona Convention. Secondly, the project will actively engage stakeholders from various sectors, including governmental bodies, research institutions, NGOs, and industry associations, fostering collaboration and coordination. This multi-stakeholder approach is essential for the effective implementation of the Regional Plan, as it encourages sharing expertise, best practices, and innovative solutions. TETHYS4ADRION will also contribute to capacity building and knowledge transfer by organising training workshops, seminars, and awareness-raising campaigns. These activities will help build the skills and knowledge necessary for implementing the Regional Plan’s strategies and measures at both local and regional levels. Furthermore, the project will serve as a platform for demonstrating and testing innovative approaches and technologies to prevent, mitigate, and remove riverine litter, preventing litter from reaching the sea. By showcasing successful case studies and pilot initiatives, TETHYS4ADRION will provide tangible examples of effective practices that can be replicated and scaled up in line with the Regional Plan’s objectives.
