Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

    • EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion SAMESEA builds on EUSAIR strategy since it aims to promote a shared management strategy of the marine ecosystems in which the wellbeing of the marine species co-exists with socio-economic activities. In Doing so, SAMESEA will promote regional cooperation to share methodologies, data, know-how and techniques to ensure that all the EUSAIR region is aligned. Furthermore, it will promote the capitalization of best practices to support a more sustainable paradigm of human activities by increasing the stakeholder and public participation. SAMESEA will contribute to the implementation of the third pillar of EUSAIR Flagship 2021-2027, i.e., Environmental Quality in relation to the flagship ‘PROMOTION OF SUSTAINABLE GROWTH OF THE AI REGION BY IMPLEMENTING ICZM AND MSP ALSO TO CONTRIBUTE CRF ON ICZM OF BARCELONA CONVENTION AND THE MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT OF MARINE PROTECTED AREA’. Given that, it will encourage an harmonized adoption of coastal and maritime spatial plans (MSP Directive, ICZM Protocol) and monitoring methodologies, and it will also pinpoint the most conflicting hotspot in which applying and test protocols of monitoring and coexistence.
    • EuropeanGreenDeal SAMESEA is in line with the EU Green Deal since it is committed to preserving marine biodiversity and establishing a new paradigm of co-existence between marine species and human activities. On the one hand, the project aims to increase the commitment of all stakeholders to monitor the well-being of marine sentinel species and by seeking to further harmonize approaches aligned with the Biodiversity Strategy 2030. On the other hand, it seeks to highlight the importance of the marine ecosystem for the overall well-being, including the economic one, according to the green and circular transition and the Industry 5.0 approach. The activities foreseen in the proposal will help to move from the blue growth approach to the one of the Sustainable Blue Economy.
    • Other Habitat Directive (92/43/EEC) - Marine Strategy Framework Directive (2008/56/EC) - Maritime Spatial Planning (2014/89/EU)
    • SAMESEA, by focusing its attention on the conservation of sentinel species (marine mammals and sea turtles) and on the management of their interactions with socio-economic activities in a transnational way, contributes to pursuing the objectives of EU directives, especially the Habitat Directive (HD), Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) and Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP). In the HD these species are considered among the species of Community Interest in need of strict protection (Annex IV) for which conservation is required through the designation of Special Areas of Conservation (SAC). In the MSFD, they are considered among the ecosystem elements relevant for the monitoring and classification of the health’ state of marine waters, for which it is required to provide measurements (values or trends) on their presence, abundance, population dynamics, distribution, habitats, ecological role and for which it is necessary to establish protective measures to prevent their health state is adversely affected by socio-economic activities. Finally the MSP requires that economic, social and environmental aspects have to be considered according to an ecosystem-based approach to promote the sustainable growth, development and use of maritime economies, areas and resources, respectively.
    • Therefore, the modeling of areas of multi-hazard susceptibility and the creation of the transnational coordination model will help stakeholders (e.g. Ministries of the Environment, managing bodies of Natura 2000 sites) to better understand where it is necessary to implement mitigation and/or measures of conservation, how to do it and what are the most important pressures that need to be addressed.
    • Other SAMESEA can also contribute to the achievement of the objectives set by some multinational initiatives, including the one on the Adriatic and Ionian Sea (AII) and the Blue Med Initiative. As regards the former, SAMESEA will contribute to work on activities related to sustainable tourism, the environment and blue growth. As far as BlueMed is concerned, SAMESEA will contribute to promoting the BlueMedi SRIA by working for the well-being of the marine ecosystem, harmonizing fishing, tourism, marine transport and off-shore platform practices with the coexistence of sentinel species by promoting a rational use of the sea by improving its decision-making and coordination.
