Relevant linked projects:
- MERCES (Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Changing European Seas), HORIZON 2020 (2016-2020). (EN) | MERCES is focused on the restoration of different degraded marine habitats, with the aim of: 1) assessing the potential of different technologies and approaches; 2) quantifying the returns in terms of ecosystems services and their socio-economic impacts; 3) defining the legal-policy and governance frameworks needed to optimize the effectiveness of the different restoration approaches. (EN), RestCoast (Large scale RESToration of COASTal ecosystems through rivers to sea connectivity) HORIZON 2020 (2021-2026) Innovation Action under grant agreement No 101037097. (EN) | Improve coastal restoration practice and techniques through new hands-on restoration projects within the REST-COAST Pilots, supported by Restoration Platforms to demonstrate and scale-up measures for wider use. (EN), Life TRANSFER (Seagrass transplantation for transitional Ecosystem Recovery (2020-2025) (LIFE 19 NAT/IT/000264) (EN) | Specifically, the aims of this project are: (1) restoring and consolidating priority habitat in 6 coastal lagoons, by transplanting submerged phanerogams to promote ecosystem self-sustainability, (2) Contributing to achieve a good ecological state of transitional water demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed actions to pursue the objectives set in the WFD 2000/60/EC; (3) Quantifying the value of ecosystem services provided by the lagoon environments and the seagrass meadows; and (4) Training of future trainers in this techniques, targeting site managers/professional not participating to the project to ensure transferability and replicability in other sites.
- Life TRANSFER aims to trigger the process of recolonization of aquatic phanerogams in selected Mediterranea lagoons through the transplanting of small sods and rhizomes of Zostera marina, Zostera noltei, Ruppia cirrhosa and Cymodocea nodosa. In each lagoon, the species previously present will be transplanted, to promote the natural propagation capacity through seed production and dispersion. (EN), Life LAGOON REFRESH (Life16 NAT/IT/000663) (2017-2022) (EN) | Life LAGOON REFRESH aimed to: (1) improve the Degree of Conservation of habitat Coastal lagoons, (2) recreating the typical estuarine oligo-mesohaline environments, in order to counteract the depletion of macrobenthic and fish communities in the Lagoon. Indeed, during last years, the brackish species have been replaced by those from the sea; and (3) reducing the degree of eutrophication, thanks to reedbed phytoremediation function, favouring the presence of sensitive species and aquatic plants of high ecological value. These characteristics are typical features of habitat 1150* in good/high level of preservation. (EN), MEDREGION (Support Mediterranean Member States towards the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive new GES Decision and programmes of measures and contribute to regional/subregional cooperation 2018-2021 (DG ENV) (EN) | Main synergy is related to 2 key objectives: (1) complete gaps in monitoring data in the Mediterranean region/subregions (with a focus on assessing the distribution, intensity and effects of the key pressures), by improving the data/information collection for the regional GES assessment and for the updated monitoring programmes, to be aligned and coherent to the IMAP process; and (2) Support to the development of effective regional measures with a special focus on biodiversity in relation to pressures exerted on it and to coordinated measures to protect species and habitats by: identification (and testing) of mechanisms to measure the effectiveness of PoMs; linking monitoring programmes with measures; measures vs their objective (i.e. how each measure is designed to help reaching GES and the updated environmental targets) and vs result and finally coordination of measures (link with other Directives) and relation to MPAs and ICZM. (EN), European Commission have open call under HORIZON, for Actions for the implementation of the Mission Restore our ocean and waters by 2030 (HORIZON-MISS-2023-OCEAN-01) (EN) | To support the implementation of the European Green Deal, the Biodiversity Strategy and the Nature Restoration Law with the expected outcomes like: (1) effectively managed marine protected areas with clear science-based conservation objectives, (2) conservation measures and protection and restoration of marine habitats and species through strictly protected areas, in particular of seabed habitats, including to preserve their carbon sequestration capacity, ensure spill-over of fish, provide ecosystem functionality and maintain connectivity; and (3) enhanced resilience and adaptation potential of coastal and marine ecosystems and improved provision of their ecosystem services, in particular in relation to climate change mitigation/adaptation and to fisheries. Thus, our project proposal perfectly fits into the main challenges highlighted in this call. (EN)

Contribution to wider strategies and policies:
- EUStrategyAdriaticIonianRegion The CRADLE project aligns with the EUSAIR's focus on enhancing environmental quality, a key pillar of the strategy. Our project directly contributes to the second flagship under this pillar: "Protection and enhancement of natural terrestrial habitats and ecosystems". By developing and implementing guidelines for the conservation and restoration of wetland and coastal nursery areas, we are enhancing the protection of these critical habitats. Furthermore, our project's emphasis on cooperation and knowledge exchange supports the EUSAIR's goal of fostering regional integration and cooperation.
- EuropeanGreenDeal The CRADLE project contributes to the European Green Deal's ambition of promoting a sustainable and climate-neutral economy. The project's focus on sustainable practices and ecosystem services aligns with the Green Deal's emphasis on biodiversity and zero pollution. By enhancing the nursery function of modified habitats, the project supports the Green Deal's objective of restoring Europe's ecosystems and their services, thereby contributing to the transition to a net-zero carbon economy.
