Protected areas often confront the development of tourism, thus reducing the potential benefits of their cultural and natural heritage for local communities. This increases the dissatisfaction of local communities from the status of this protected area and the environmental policy implemented there in general. This can be changed by developing sustainable, resilient and innovative tourism system, which would include the management of protected areas and the active involvement of visitors in these activities. Our goal is to create new kind of tourism product for people searching for places to experience unspoiled nature and show that South Baltic protected areas are such destinations. Participation in management processes, such as nature restoration and leisure by education may occur one of the most appreciable source of visitors satisfaction and should be developed and promotoed jointly by units responsible both for nature management and tourist development. Developing the management of protected areas as a tourism product would provide additional alternatives for tourists, create new sustainable tourist destinations and bring more benefits to local communities. This is in a line with South Baltic programme’s specific objective: RSO 4. 6. "Enhancing the role of culture and sustainable tourism in economic development, social inclusion and social innovation” of Priority 3 Measure 3.1: Developing sustainable, resilient and innovative tourism". This follows to several points with the development of the management of protected areas as a tourism product: 1. Creation of the content of a tourism product based on the maintenance of protected areas 2. Development of a South Baltic cross-border tourist system based on involvement of visitors in protected areas management. 3. International evaluation of trends and market for promotion of new tourist system in protected areas. All these points are directly related to the use of opportunities provided by the mechanism of cross-border cooperation in the South Baltic region. The creation of the content of the mentioned tourism product must be based both on the sharing of experiences from different South Baltic areas and on the most diverse expert assessment from different countries. In order for this tourism product to become successful, it must include the most diverse attractions and the most diverse territories, which the South Baltic region can provide. After all, the specificity of such a tourism product is that it is available only in certain areas that cover only up to 25 percent of the entire territory, and its users are an exclusive group. Therefore, if you want to ensure a suitable market for this product, you need a regional approach, not a national one, and here the South Baltic region is a good medium for creating a market for such a product. The main idea of the project is to put together the management of various protected areas in the South Baltic, involvement of visitors and local communities and the development of resilent tourism in this region. By properly combining these groups of activities, it is possible to resolve emerging conflicts between local socio-economic development and the management of protected areas. In this way, a synergistic effect is obtained when not only the consequences of this conflict are minimized, but also the dissatisfaction of local business with the existing restrictions in protected areas are strongly reduced. At the same time, new opportunities and alternatives are provided for the development of sustainable environmental tourism products, thus contributing to the development of sustainable, resilient and innovative tourism.
