First, SBA is facing significant challenges in its tourism sector, characterized by high seasonality and an uneven distribution of tourists within the region and across its destinations, hindering the area's sustainable development. The root cause of high seasonality in SBA lies in the lack of innovative and sustainable cross-border tourism offerings that would be environmentally friendly, socially inclusive, economically viable all year round. Despite SBA's uniqueness in its blue and green character, its potential for creating cross-border tourist offerings remains largely untapped. Second, tourism sector in the SBA continues to grapple with the lingering socio-economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic's extensive and enduring negative effects health have led to unprecedented issues, including fatigue, anxiety, and a decline in physical fitness. The pandemic has heightened awareness of preventive health measures, creating a new demand and opportunity for SMEs in SBA to develop sustainable and innovative nature-based wellness offerings for health recovery and enhancement. The project aims to ensure conditions for sustainable development and resilience of the SBA tourism sector by introducing innovative thematic cross-border nature-based wellness routes, specifically tailored for health recovery and enhancement. By promoting cross-border cooperation, these thematic routes will provide new business opportunities for SMEs, enhance the visibility of SBA tourism, and increase sustainable development by extending the season through cross-border year-round tourism offerings. The proposed N-B-Well tourism routes are not yet existent in the SBA. Building on the knowledge obtained from the SB WELL project (2021), which highlighted general tourism experiences, we avoid overlaps by concentrating on health recovery and enhancement. The project's innovative approach includes the creation of an Interactive digital E-Tool for the search of health recovery services and activities on N-B-Well thematic routes. This tool allows businesses to collaborate in developing cross-border tourism offerings, enabling tourists to select routes based on their physical and mental health condition, diseases, fitness level, and travel preferences. Cross-border cooperation and implemented activities will lead to the following outputs: 1. Guidelines and framework for the development of the sustainable N-B-Well tourism model for health recovery; 2. A set of three distinct types of thematic cross-border N-B-Well Routes for health recovery; 3. Digital E-Tool for the search o cross-border N-B-Well offerings; 4. N-B-Well Tourism Network. Project outputs are designed to achieve several key results leading to the sustainable development of the SBA. By creating innovative cross-border N-B-Well routes and a development model, the region's economic resilience, and visibility will be enhanced. Cross-border cooperation will foster diverse year-round nature-based tourism services, minimizing seasonality, offering new business opportunities, and generating local employment. These thematic routes will serve for health recovery of tourists and society. Cross-border and cross-institutional cooperation is essential for the N-B-Well project to achieve its objective of enhancing sustainability and competitiveness in the SBA tourism sector. By engaging in cross-border visits and learning from the best practices, we can develop a unified SBA N-B-Wellness concept, and innovative thematic cross-border N-B-Well routes. Each PP has strength and experience in a different field: universities have strong connections with local businesses and municipalities, and will facilitate networking among local SMEs and DMOs. PPs represented by associations and municipalities have strong managerial angle and expertise and will contribute with innovative market-based ideas.
