Contribution to wider strategies and policies:

  • The transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles is supporting the reduction of CO2 emissions. Lack of charging infrastructure and availability on the grid is a limiting factor for the uptake of EVs. Super smart charging hubs and advanced smart (bidirectional) charging algorithms are reducing the impact on the grid and therefore allowing the installation of more charging stations.
  • The EU’s Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy outlines a 90% cut in emissions by 2050, delivered by a smart, competitive, safe, accessible and affordable transport system. The SSCH will contribute to decarbonisation of road transport in the EU by delivering solutions and services to the sector for smart charging of the electric vehicles while overcoming grid congestion.
  • The strategy aims to deliver on three key priorities: maintaining European industry's global competitiveness and a level playing field, at home and globally, making Europe climate-neutral by 2050 and shaping Europe's digital future. SSCH foremost contributes to the climate-neutral priority, but also aims to contribute to a level playing field with policy recommendations related to the SSCH aspects of regulations and policies.
  • Many cities in the NSR are gradually moving towards zero emission zones. This affects among others charging infrastructure and Total Cost of Ownership. Cheap and accessible charging hubs are essential in realising the ambitions developed in this policy framework.
  • Most grid operators have issued extensive and important investment plans concerning the reinforcement needs for the grid. Electric charging plays an important role in this plan and the grid operators and owners are continuously looking for evidence on how to minimize the investment needs as well as the discomfort for the citizens.
  • The EU Electricity Directive establishes common rules for the generation, transmission, distribution, energy storage and supply of electricity in the EU. The transnational solutions delivered by the SSCH will contribute to creating truly integrated competitive, consumer-centred, flexible, fair and transparent electricity markets in the EU.
  • The EU Action Plan for Grids puts forward a list of actions for making the European grid more decentralised, digitalised and flexible. The outcomes of the SSCH on the topic of smart charging will contribute to the implementation of the EU Action plan for Grids, particularly by providing solutions and business models for planning of grids, better usage of grids, access to finance, streamlining administrative permitting procedures, and strengthening grid supply chains.
  • The AFIR sets a framework for the rollout of (smart) charging infrastructure. Similarly, the EPBD, modernizes the EU’s framework for climate legislation on buildings by introducing targets to rollout charging infrastructure in residential and non-residential buildings. The revised RED establishes common rules and targets in terms of the development of renewable energy across all sectors of the EU economy. SSCH will support the implementation by delivering hands on manuals to stakeholders.
