Development of sewage infrastructure in two cities - Suwalki and Ternopil

The general objective of the project is to improve the quality of natural environment in the cities of Suwałki and Ternopil and in the cross-border Programme area. Modernization and renovation of sewage system infrastructure in Suwalki (PL) 0,742 km long and Ternopil (UA) 1,362 km long enable to avoid environmental pollution by sanitary sewage system in Suwalki (incl.Czarna Hancza river and residential areas) and Ternopil (incl.Seret river and residential areas) and improve safety of sewage management UC "Ternopilvodokanal” provides water supply and wastewater disposal services in Ternopil and nearby villages which are used by 222000 people. The total length of wastewater networks is 295,9 km, of which 167,6 km are dilapidated. The specified sewage pipelines to be reconstructed within the project were laid in 1988 and due to long-term operation are significantly worn, which leads to the occurrence of repeated emergency situations. The most dangerous is the probability of emergency situations, in case of damage to two lines of pipelines at the same time and create a threat of wastewater leaks to the surface in areas of intensive residential areas and on the roads of the city or even to Seret River. It is necessary to carry out reconstruction of the wastewater collectors from WWPS No.9 at 27 Sheptytskyi street to WWTP on Obizna street, D-630mm – in total 1.362 km long (2 lines x 681 m), open method that means complete replacing of old pipes with new ones, along with the construction of two switching chambers with manholes and laying 303 m of electric cable. The open method of laying the pipeline consists in digging a trench of the required depth with their subsequent strengthening and placement of the pipes themselves. The sewage infrastructure in Suwalki is managed by Water Supply and Sewerage Company in Suwalki. The total length of the sanitary sewage system in the city of Suwałki which was operated by the Company, is 130,7 km, of which almost 15% is over 40 years old. The most exploited sections of the network are located in Reja Street and on the section from Hubala St. to the Zastawie St. pumping station. Large-diameter pipelines are made in concrete technology, which are subject to progressive degradation and must be urgently renovated. Sanitary sewage system intended for renovation using the trenchless method, without disturbing the structure of the surface by inserting a special fiberglass lining soaked in epoxy resin inside the channel and then hardening with high temperature or ultraviolet rays: sanitary sewage system using the trenchless method will be renovated: from Hubala St. towards Leśna St.: 562 m long and in Reja St.: 180 m long also 3 chambers/wells in this Reja section will be replaced. Main project outputs Length of new or upgraded pipes for the public network for collection of waste water: 2,104 km (0,742 km Suwalki), (1,362 km Ternopil) Participations in joint actions across borders: 30 participants (15 Suwalki) and (15 Ternopil) Result indicator: Solutions taken or up-scaled by organisations: 1 common solution for the modernization of the sanitary sewage system developed by 2 partners and on the basis of a comprehensive report on sustainable sewage management. The modernized sewage infrastructure in two cities will be carried out in two ways, in Ternopil using the traditional open method, i.e. digging ditches and replacing of old pipes with new ones (1,362 km long) and in Suwałki using the trenchless method (technology) for sanitary sewage system renovation without digging and disturbing the structure of the surface (total: 0,742 km long). There will also be conducted 1 joint online workshop and an online final conference with presentation of a comprehensive report on sustainable sewage management (e-version in 3 lang.:PL-UA-ENG)
