- To accommodate the needs of the green industry clusters in and around the coastal cities of Österbotten and Västerbotten, and to keep enough people in rural areas to justify basic services there's a pressing need for more in-migration, diversification of the job market and more jobs for those with a higher education.
- The games industry, a fast growing and scalable digital export sector based on creativity, offers a complementary solution to manufacturing industries and create a more diverse labour market, increase the number of people with higher education in the programme area and introduce competences necessary to future sustainable intersective innovation in alignment with the EU taxonomy.
- Some of the existing companies have seasoned leadership with robust international networks and experience in company development, but most companies lack this well-needed expertise. Typically, game industry specific incubators and accelerators address these gaps, but both Österbotten and Västerbotten lack these. To solve that the project aims to strengthen the competitiveness with a digital first support system.
- The primary objective of the project is to bolster the competitiveness of SMEs in the games industry, enhancing their innovation process, fueling further product development, and strengthening their business capabilities. By achieving this, we anticipate a stronger and more sustainable games industry in both rural and urban areas. The project also aspires to create the foundation for a transnational game accelerator coordinated with EU-initiatives, innovation systems, municipalities, regions, and national programmes as well as other key stakeholders. (EN) | The synergies within X Border Support4Games will emerge through transnational collaboration, particularly between regional development initiatives and the creative industries. By aligning with local/regional innovation ecosystems, the project will foster stronger connections between municipalities, and SMEs promoting shared growth and learning. This cross-sector synergy will enhance the resilience and sustainability of rural economies, creating a unified effort toward sustainable development. (EN), BSG-Go

- The current national focus is on industrial establishments in Northern Sweden, which requires a massive influx of people to the region. To succeed, a diversified and broad job market is needed, and a strong and competitive games industry undergoing growth will contribute to this. The games industry is a growth engine within the cultural and creative sectors, and increasing the number of jobs in the industry will lead to a more diversified job market in the region.
- The project's goal is, through methods and tools that build long-term value and competence, to create a competitive and growing games industry with more innovative companies, more international agreements, more employees, and a strong community of actors working towards common goals across a large geography.
- The overall goal is to create a sustainable, growing, and cohesive games industry with more jobs and new establishments in Norr- and Västerbotten. A strong cultural and creative sector contributes to the region's attractiveness, increased gender equality and inclusion, green transition, and a diversified job market. (EN) | The synergies between Game Attraction North and InnoGS include fostering a competitive and sustainable game development industry in northern Sweden, with a focus on innovation, international expansion, and talent retention. Both projects emphasize the importance of green transition, equality, and inclusivity. - The main objective of the project is to strengthen the capabilities and opportunities of young people and young adults at risk of social disadvantage to achieve equal participation and engagement in education, the labor market, or pathways leading to them. Capability refers to experiencing health and well-being, a sense of agency and inclusion, and the ability to study and function. Those at greatest risk are young people and young adults who face significant challenges in engaging in secondary education and are not in a condition to study. They lack adequate guidance, support, help, and care, often dropping out of their studies and becoming unreachable. The issues faced by these young people are complex, and their trust in the service system is fragile. Effective support is based on coordinated, inclusive work by the entire network in collaboration with the young person.
- The target group of the project consists of 16–29-year-olds who face significant challenges in connecting with secondary education and whose study readiness is insufficient or at risk. The target group also includes professionals working with young people, such as those in social and health services, youth work, secondary education institutions, and third-sector organizations. (EN) | Through project collaboration, young people across the North Savo region who are struggling with secondary education can be identified, and connections can be made with the authorities working with them. Gamification offers these young people opportunities to find learning methods that engage their personal interests. These opportunities and methods to encourage learning are shared with authorities through the InnoGS network and innovation ecosystem. - The GameON project promotes employment opportunities and well-being for unemployed individuals and those outside the workforce, aged 16–54, through group activities related to gaming. It is essential to find new methods and models to support unemployed individuals and those outside education and employment. Utilizing gaming activities for these goals has yielded positive experiences, which the project aims to further develop to enhance employment and well-being.
- The main objective is to support the functional capacity and employment prospects of young people and adults through personal development and group activities. The focus is on different aspects of gaming and strengthening digital skills. The project helps participants discover new paths to employment and education while enhancing their digital competencies. At the same time, the project promotes participants' social functioning. (EN) | A sense of belonging related to a shared hobby, such as gaming, finding new career paths, and developing digital skills are common factors between the GameON and InnoGS projects. Together, GameON and InnoGS organize workshops that engage young people and underrepresented groups in developing their well-being in rural areas, while helping them discover ways to enhance their skills and find employment opportunities. - Vibrant regional innovation ecosystems as an attractor for talent and skills is our common need. In addition to contributing to the competitiveness of our regions, innovation ecosystems create a trickledown effect benefiting all. Measuring the ability of innovation ecosystems is necessary because it provides useful quantifiable data to understand its current state and identify areas for enhancement. The main target group is policymakers, however, such measurements can inform other public and private bodies to multiply their efforts for the common good.
- Developed by Region Västerbotten, METRIC is a measurement tool we will develop further. With the involvement of key stakeholders, indicators for fast demonstrations are selected based on regional relevance and data availability. A systematic process to adapt and transfer METRIC will be part of the action plan for full-scale measurement and communication. Throughout the project, capacity to evaluate innovation ecosystems is built. (EN) | InnoGS utilizes the METRIC measurement tool to assess the innovation ecosystem, which it will create. With the support of the ASTRIC project, the METRIC results can be further evaluated to determine what actions are needed to make the innovation ecosystem more attractive to its beneficiaries and to enhance its efficiency as a collaborative environment. (EN), Fostering Innovation Ecosystems in Rural Iceland
- Iceland's Strategic research and development program
- 01.01.2020 - 31.12.2023
- Leaded by East of Moon
- The project aimed to develop adaptable tools for remote and rural communities in Iceland to harness the changes brought by automation, increased connectivity, and digitalization. As economic development becomes more knowledge-driven and less reliant on traditional industries, cities are often seen as leaders, leaving rural areas to catch up. In Iceland, data shows a significant gap in innovation between the capital region and the countryside.
- This project seeks to reverse that dynamic by empowering rural communities to see change as an opportunity rather than a threat. Grounded in the latest research on regional development and the practical experiences of rural innovators, the project will create new tools, platforms, and events in collaboration with local actors. These tools will be shared as open blueprints, offering practical lessons for rural communities to adapt and thrive in an evolving digital landscape. (EN) | East of Moon's experience in running accelerators and fostering rural innovation will help expand InnoGS's reach. Their expertise in entrepreneurship and social ventures complements our focus on change through game and skills development. East of Moon’s philosophy of pushing boundaries aligns with our experimental approach, ensuring InnoGS's solutions remain innovative and relevant to today’s societal challenges. Together, we can create meaningful impact. (EN), Nordic Alliance for Sustainability in Gaming
