Description (EN):

Project aims to facilitate watertourism by focusing on innovative solutions to access and use recreational waters, routes and products by all target groups (incl. disabled, seniors, families with children etc.), at the same time also supporting sustainable infrastructure, which controls and reduces anthropogenic impact of recreational activities. The project will build on available knowledge from the two projects (2013-2015 Est-Lat RIVERWAYS and 2023-2025 Lat-Lit WaterWays) and spread further the watertourism network providing more access to more target groups. Nowadays, the stereotype of water tourism being mainly used by fit and active part of population, is breaking down – user group has widened. Families with children, seniors are interested in watertourism options. This brings up the need to develop more accessible watertourism environment – develop all-target groups related multifunctional infrastructure with complex approach to services providing for full customer journey. 17 infrastructure objects will be developed in the project in Latvia and Estonia as a pilot activity to improve access and create joint social innovation solutions for watertourism activities.

Actual Achievements (EN):

During period 1, as part of general project management: LP hosted the first project meeting - kick-off on 23-24 September 2024 in Kuldīga with 25 attendees participating. Regional scale partners (KPR, VPR, RPR, UT) started work on procurements for attracting the accessibility experts (partners have agreed not to share the cost, but contract access experts separately). All partners created project sub-sections in their webpages and started posting updates on project progress. LP together with regional scale partners also revived the "old" FB profile Riverways, Upesoga and Seikleveel and started posting news on the current Riverways II project (posts can be selected using tabs #riverways, #interreg, #estlat) . As part of WP1, partners started: Activity 1.1. Infrastructure improvements by PP12 Valmiera working out the draft pier construction task (on own cost) and reviewed by the LP and NGO Apeirons (positive feedback received), and a number of other partners starting to work on procurement documentation. PP17 purchased a floating wheelchair for the project site - Pühajärve Lake beach. Activity 1 2. Survey & inspection of recreational waters' accessibility by working together with Lat-Lit WaterWays project on the draft Water tourism resources & Lakes profiling templates to be used by partners in their on-spot checks, and created and sent out the Questionnaire for Boat rental operators in LV and EE. Activity 1 3. Expanding/revising websites by LP participating at all online riverways.eu modernisation meetings with representatives of the Lat-Lit WaterWays Project and their contracted website development company. As part of WP2, LP, PP3 VPR and PP4 UT started Activity 2.1 Cross-border Hackathon by coordinating the organisation of the hackathon in Vidzeme on 27-28 Feb 2025. Registraton has opened and selection of participants has started. As part of Project management, partners hold a Zoom meeting on 06.01.25. about reporting, project progress & publicity activities and an on-site meeting in Valmiera on 27.02.25. in parallel with the project hackathon event. Partners also revived the "old" Riveways FB profiles created in the first Riverways project in LV (Upes oga), ENG (Riverways) and EE (Seikle veel) and started posting project news and sharing watertourism related posts. LP1, PP2, PP3 contracted accessibility expertise services for LV partners, each signing a contract with NGO Apeirons on the provision of accessibility expert services for the whole project period in the respective region. Accessibility expertise services for EE side are ensured by PP4, which has contracted MTÜ Ligipääsetavuse Foorum. The progress towards the achievement of the project objectives is going on as planned, by the end of Period 2, partners have been working on: - WP1 objective - to jointly implement pilot activities to test and find solutions for waterfront accessibility - by developing sketches of piers/resting areas/parking lots to improve waterfront accessibility and have jointly shared and discussed most efficient solutions to choose, incl. with accessibility experts who also inspected the investments places on-sites and provided their recommendations - actual construction is planned in the next periods after carrying out the public procurement procedures; carried out desk-survey & started inspections on accessibility of public waters in partner areas - to be continued in the next periods; continued work on modernising of the riverways.eu website carried out as part of the Lat-Lit Waterways Project - planned to be finished in Period 4. - WP2 objective - to build up the knowledge and competence of stakeholders to co-create innovative solutions on the development of accessible nature tourism products involving water-based activities - by organizing the international water-tourism accessibility hackathon in Vidzeme, where accessibility experts from LV and EE presented best practice solutions to be inspired from and 8 hackathon teams spent 2 full exciting days on developing their innovative ideas; started work on the development of the training course for water tourism operators, which will take place over Period 4-6.

Synergy: the new Est-Lat project builds upon and makes use of the past RIVERWAYS project results described in above sections in details. The EUBSR Action Plan under PA Tourism Action 1relates to transnational tourism development in remote&rural areas and supports, i.a., improving accessibility, connectivity, visibility & the attractiveness iof remote areas.
Action 3 relates to protection & sustainable utilisation of cultural heritage & natural resources in tourism destinations and supports, i.a., improving the touristic infrastructure with regard to climate protection & sustainable mobility, accessibility & connectivity in an ecological way.
The project will directly benefit the identified support fiels by improving accessibility to watertourism infrastructure at 20 selected sites in EE&LV for all travellers' groups, incl. families with children, seniors, visually impaired, people with movement disorders, as well as further developing the waterways network and offering wider watertourism options in LV&EE.
