The Sustainable Tourism through Resilient and Innovative Festival Ventures (STRIVE) project tackles a pivotal challenge in the South Baltic region: leveraging festivals as key platforms for attracting tourists and building a brand of sustainable festivals. This initiative aims to bolster sustainable tourism development across the region. Festivals, far more than mere cultural events, are vital economic drivers, drawing thousands, even millions, of attendees and tourists. Statistics underscore the impact of these festivals: regional festivals attract up to 30% of annual tourists, significantly contributing to the local economy. These events account for a major portion of annual tourism revenue. Approximately 70% of festival-goers engage in auxiliary spending on local businesses, accommodation, food, and cultural sites, injecting financial vitality into host communities. However, this influx also poses environmental and infrastructural challenges, emphasizing the need for sustainable practices. STRIVE's mission is to transform these festivals into catalysts for sustainable tourism development in the South Baltic region. The project has identified seven major festivals, each a unique cultural beacon attracting a significant tourist population. This data has been identified via desk research and asking the festival organizers themselves: 1. Malmöfestivalen: Malmö's cultural fest, 1.5M visits in 8 days, 70% tourists. 2. Hanse Sail: Rostock's maritime event, 500K attendees, over 50% tourists. 3. Baltic Sail: Gdansk's maritime heritage festival, 50K visitors, 5K tourists. 4. Freedom and Solidarity Festival: Gdansk's democracy celebration, 80K visitors, thousands of tourists. 5. Folkemødet: Bornholm's political festival, 100K visitors, 72% tourists. 6. Roskilde Festival: Sustainable music event in Roskilde, 130K participants, 80% tourists. 7. Sea Festival Klaipeda: Lithuania's major maritime festival, attracting over 500K visitors, many tourists. A central output of STRIVE is the development of a Festival-Driven Sustainable Tourism Model. This model will integrate sustainable tourism framework results with practical, scalable circular solutions for festivals, aligning closely with our efforts to establish a distinctive brand identity for the South Baltic region. Through this model, STRIVE aims to not only improve festival operations but also to craft a compelling narrative that resonates globally, highlighting the region's commitment to sustainability. In addition to the sustainable tourism model, STRIVE is dedicated to crafting comprehensive policy guidelines. These guidelines will reshape governance and legislative standards, ensuring sustainable practices are embedded within community entrepreneurship and festival planning. The cross-border nature of our approach is crucial. By fostering unity in diversity, STRIVE leverages the collective expertise and resources of its partners across the region, allowing for the pooling of resources, the exchange of best practices, and the strengthening of regional solidarity. STRIVE's ultimate goal is to position the South Baltic region as a leader in sustainable tourism, using festivals as platforms for regional change and promoting sustainable tourism. STRIVE stands out for its innovative approach to sustainable tourism, blending cultural vibrancy with environmental responsibility. The project pioneers the integration of circular economy principles into festival operations, setting a new standard for event sustainability to drive and attract tourism. In the long term, STRIVE envisions a transformed South Baltic region, where festivals are synonymous with sustainability, and the region is recognized as a global leader in sustainable tourism. This vision extends beyond the project's lifespan, aiming to leave a lasting legacy that influences future festival planning and sustainable tourism practice.
