Since 2000 years, wooden ships of different designs have shaped the Baltic Sea region’s trade, transport and communication. In many coastal areas of the South Baltic maritime traditions such as sailing, fishing and boatbuilding are still a source of identity and pride for local inhabitants. In 2021 a boat building method called the Nordic clinker has been awarded the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity status, adding a considerable cultural asset to the entire region. In the international comparison though, the South Baltic Area is not renowned as destination for cultural tourism and slow, sustainable tourism. Besides the famous maritime heritage hotspots such as Gdańsk, Klaipeda or the Kalmar region in Sweden, there are a lot of places connected to the maritime heritage, which are undiscovered yet by the wider public. This is a yet untapped opportunity for creating a year-round cultural theme-based touristic offer, which would attract new visitors to these sometimes remote but non-the-less attractive places the South Baltic Area. BOATMAN’s vision is a South Baltic network of sustainable-tourism centers (hubs) united by the topic of maritime heritage and cooperating with each other across borders. The hubs will be based either on the existing infrastructure (boatyards, museums, municipal marinas) or in other locations the infrastructure will have to be designed and built. With help of the project investments, a selection of typical for each region boats and other small tourist infrastructure will be implemented. They will serve as a base of the BOATMAN network’s touristic offer and will be maintained by public entities and/or NGOs who own them. But even more importantly, through cross-border cooperation and the exchange of experience the project will build up the human capital – the capacity of the local communities to develop and implement innovative visions for their areas. The concepts - visions and action plans - for each hub will be developed in a participative manner by Local Stakeholders' Networks (LSNs), consisting of local tourism stakeholders including municipalities, civil society organizations and individuals, both project partners and not. In order to boost the exchange of experience and provide fresh ideas, at least three cross-border study tours will be organised for these local stakeholders. The BOATMAN hubs will be filled with life by the innovative touristic and cultural activities offer, which will be designed, tested and evaluated jointly during the project. Examples thereof will be: - Hands-on crafts workshops (boat renovation, boat model making, wood processing, rope-making etc.) - Boatbuilding showcases, lectures, talks with experts, guided visits to museums exhibitions, visiting seaside heritage places and other edutainment activities - Sailing tours (daytrips or longer theme-trips) with and without active involvement of the participants - Festivities and events around the boats and sailing The activities will be promoted under the professionally created common brand and following an innovative joint marketing strategy. Attractive information and edu-tainment material will be produced with joint content and design. The tourists will be thus encouraged to discover also the other hubs and their unique offers. Local inhabitants will also be profiting from the creation of hubs. Not only because they will provide incentives for growth of all-year infrastructure and sustainable businesses, but they will provide meaningful free-time and educational activities, thus making their regions more attractive as a living and working place.
