The project “ΘΑΛ-ΧΩΡ 3” (THAL-HOR 3) aims to monitor and evaluate the Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) through the creation of methods, tools and relevant indicators, which will assist the competent Authorities in the more effective exercise of their responsibilities. The focus of the project is the environmental, economic, social and cultural parameters of the maritime space, with the aim of strengthening the decision-making process in the MSP. Actions include (a) creating a database for the aforementioned parameters, using official statistics and remote sensing methods to collect additional data and information, (b) analysing, developing and evaluating social, economic, environmental and cultural indicators, (c) preparing study for the creation of observatories in Greece and Cyprus which are expected to contribute to the protection of the marine environment, the monitoring of uses and activities at sea and the development of early warning systems to mitigate environmental impacts and improve economic, social and cultural parameters of the MSP and (d) the development of a digital platform for simulating and monitoring the marine environment and the uses and activities that take place in the marine space, with the use of remote sensing tools and other innovative digital tools. The creation of observatories for the MPS is an innovative action for Europe. The development of appropriate indicators for the evaluation of the implementation of the MSP is a modern research challenge, at an international level. The multi-year cooperation between the competent authorities of Greece and Cyprus with the most specialized University Departments of the two states has contributed significantly to the development of the MSP in the two countries and ensures that the modern challenges faced by Greece and Cyprus will be successfully answered, with the aim of the desired sustainable development in their marine environment.
