- CE4RT- Circular Economy for Regenerative Tourism
- 2023-2025
- (Single Market Programme)
- CE4RT seeks to provide tourism SMEs with the tools to implement regenerative practices as a long-term strategy within their region and to contribute to the continued resilience, viability and competitiveness of the industry. The project brings forward a cooperative approach to tourism development that goes beyond sustainable practices and focusses on Circular Economy and Regenerative Tourism. CE4RT seeks to provide training and mentoring on the development of innovative behavioural changes that inform the tourist on how their actions can have a positive impact on their destination. From the business perspective, it can support competitiveness and provide opportunities for innovation, diversification and differentiation. For the tourists, it can provide the opportunity to leave a positive impact on the destination
- (EN), . (FR) | The project will bring key learnings regarding the Regenerative Tourism definition and adaptation to European context. Additionally, the coaching and mentoring to stakeholders will be capitalized within Regenera4MED’s Elicittation programme. Training models and content used in CE4RT will be considered when tailoring the Capacity Building workshops to be carried out within the project. Furthermore, the innovative solutions towards regenerative tourism to be created jointly by SMEs and other stakeholders will be looked upon as references when creating experiences canvas and proposals during the IDEATION process in Regenera4MED. As CE4RT aims to mainstream their solutions through an international network, the advancements of the project will be followed and considered through the development of Regenera4MED.
- CE4RT will be invited to collaborate through cross-fertilization activities (A3.4).
- AO5-Visit Skane is partner of this project.
- (EN), . (FR), REGENERA WATER SPORT
- 2024-2026
- (ERASMUS + SportsProgramme)
- REGENERA WATER SPORT aims to develop a methodology through which sport activities do not only become climate neutral, but also provide a positive impact on the environment and communities inhabiting a certain area. Specialized in water sports conducted in natural areas, the project is based on the concept of ‘regenerative tourism’, and aims to develop ‘regenerative sport’ activities for both locals and tourists. Furthermore, the project aims to test a 5-Helix Multistakeholder governance model in the concerned areas, as to ensure the sustainability of the regenerative practices through collaborative processes.
- (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalize on the outputs extracted from Pilot sites, especially the concrete activities that are produced through this methodology, which can be adapted to become tourism experiences or activities (Regenera Water Sport considers tourists as one of their target audiences, as they are frequent users of the bodies of the Pilot Destinations). Specially in marine areas or beaches, since the project focuses on water sports.
- Furthermore, Regenera water sport also employs a 5-Helix Multistakeholder governance model, and good practices emerging from their experiences will be gathered as to ensure this project’s success in implementing this governance system.
- RWS will be invited to collaborate through cross-fertilization activities (A3.4)
- (EN), . (FR), C-FAARER
- 2023-2025
- (HORIZON programme)
- C-FAARER develops an innovative methodology based on a community-driven business model for regenerative ocean farming practices, enabling policy makers to create a new, sustainable and resilient policy framework for ocean farmers in the Atlantic and Arctic Sea. The project places special importance on communities, as main drivers of this initiative, and on stakeholders, which are expected to collaborate together to produce relevant solutions to the problem identified in the area. (EN), . (FR) | While farming and tourism might seem two separate fields, these projects share to key elements in their rationale: aiming for regenerative practices, and involving communities in the creation and implementation of the new model. Thus, Regenera4MED will build on both these points: firstly, looking at the regenerative activities developed in C-FAARER, paying special attention to the indicators used to measure the effect of the activities (to develop Regenera4MED self-assessment tool). Secondly, building on the dynamics used in C-FAARER to involve communities and empower them to become an engine for change, understanding how to enhance their participation.
- C-FAARER will be invited to collaborate through cross-fertilization activities (A3.4) (EN), . (FR), TOURBIT
- 2022 –2024
- (COSME Programme)
- TOURBIT's general objective is to promote the adoption of digitization, innovation and new technologies by tourism SMEs so that they are more resilient and competitive and to stimulate a faster transformation of the European tourism sector by deploying a transnational support scheme and cross-ecosystem within the framework of three pillars (Learn, Build, Test and Implement), maximizing efforts and resources. Deployment of competitive grant calls in the 7 countries, supporting 62 European SMEs (ACT will support 7 partners representing destinations from Catalonia, Portugal, France, Slovenia, Belgium, Island, Finland).
- (EN), . (FR) | There are 3 outputs from TOURBIT upon which the current project will capitalise: 1) the Digital Readiness Assessment Tool 2) The Co-Creation Workshops for the SMEs and other stakeholders of the tourism ecosystem 3) TourBIZZ platform. All outputs serve in practical terms for the self-assessment tool to be built by Regenera4MED for the tourism SMEs which will measure their regenerative impact, and the platform will be of help especially in terms of information & outreach to the tourism stakeholders across the Euro-MED region, awareness raising, and dissemination. The methodology for the Co-creation workshop, which proved successful in the case of Tourbit, will also serve as an inspiration for activity 2.3 (WP2). Ideation, co-creation workshops. (EN), . (FR), RESTART MED
- 2021-2023
- (ENI CBC MED Programme)
- RESTART MED (Revitalization of Sustainable Tourism Across Regions in The MEDiterranean) is a capitalization project that gathered best practices, tools and valuable information from projects carried out in the Mediterranean basin in the last 10 years in Sustainable Tourism, for the benefit of SMEs; DMCs/tourism agencies and the entire tourism value chain in Catalonia. The project created synergies between tourism experiences providers, public actors and the civil society to commonly create a more resilient tourism sector. It created a checklist to analyse policies and provided funding to communicate about sustainable products.
- 678// 1000
- (EN), . (FR) | The current project, in general, will further the work that was done in the past in terms of awareness raising initiatives to build sustainable communities. Another crucial element upon which it will capitalise is the online sustainable tourism community platform, that will serve a great deal especially in terms of information & outreach, awareness raising, and dissemination. Furthermore, the trainings on sustainability and promotion carried out, have laid the groundwork for Regenera4MED to work with tourism agencies, DMOs, etc on regenerative tourism practices. Finally, the interconnections between several actors will be looked upon to establish best practices for fruitful and respectful cooperation and collaboration. (EN), . (FR), TOURBAN
- 2020-2023
- (COSME PROGRAMME)
- Tourban supports urban tourism SMEs in becoming more competitive and more sustainable – not only from an environmental but also from an economic and social point of view.
- It provides them with the skills, capacity, and financial resources they need to become catalysts for innovation and sustainability. This way, they will be able to reduce costs and resource consumption, and to increase their revenue streams through an improved visibility and positioning. Tourban brings together eight partners from seven European cities: Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dubrovnik, Kiel, and Tallinn. (EN), . (FR) | 1) Sustainable Urban Tourism Acceleration Programme and the 2) Mentoring Programme for SMEs, are two outputs that Regenera4MED will leverage upon, in particular for the elaboration of the Regenera4MED Elicitation programme (A1.3) and its implementation (A2.3, A2.4, A2.5). Both serve also as an inspiration on how to engage the tourism 5-helix stakeholders in an innovative way on their sustainable transformation processes. Regenera4MED, unlike Tourban, has a wider geographical stretch: going further than the urban areas, and will go beyond sustainability and include regeneration as a main concept for the tourism actors to implement. (EN), . (FR), . (FR), Multiprogramme Coordination Mechanism - sustainable tourism
- The Interreg Mediterranean Multiprogramme Coordination Mechanism is a pilot coordination project involving several Interreg programmes in the Mediterranean area on the topic of sustainable tourism, aimed at strengthening their synergies with a twofold objective:
- - improve coordination in the joint monitoring and evaluation of the impact of best practices and innovative solutions tested at the local level, creating a value chain between the projects, thus favouring potential transfer, scaling up and mainstreaming processes;
- - develop reinforced Interreg policy recommendations to increase the overall impact and sustainability of resources invested in territories, by improving the quality of interventions and sharing the richness of existing knowledge related to a specific topic.
- Programmes involved
- (EN) | Regenera4MED wil both capitalise on produced outputs, as for instance the Sustainable Tourism toolkit (A1.1) but also will seek synergies through the cross fertilization and AB (A3.4) but also for the mainstreaming and Policy impact (A3.6) since the objective are aligned:
- - set common goals and carry out joint activities, such as joint monitoring actions and defining
- shared methodologies for identifying and reusing project results;
- -promote a coordinated approach to communication in the Mediterranean area to ensure
- - better communication with beneficiaries or applicants from the region;
- - develop joint actions to transfer individual solutions, maximizing their capitalisation
- and facilitating the integration of results;
- - provide shared responses to common challenges, such as coordinated calls for proposals;
- - open up and expand external dialogue to engage new stakeholders and the European Commission, promoting the solutions introduced for the benefit of the territories. (EN), . (FR), TOURAL
- 2024- Ongoing
- (Horizon Europe)
- TOURAL proposes a model to support the touristic development of participating rural regions, balancing the growth of their urban clusters with the untapped growth potential of their remote and rural grid cells. Its modelling approach will be multi-dimensional in terms of addressing complementary tourism verticals/niche sectors (underwater cultural & nature heritage tourism, cultural & creative tourism, cultural science tourism, silver tourism); participatory in terms of co-designing policy pathways and tourism offerings/services, co-creating business models and tourism products, and co-validating small-scale tourism services implementations; and integrated in terms of joint planning and business development with integrated value-chains, policymaking and cross-border cooperation, at macro-regions level. (EN), . (FR) | While TOURAL is currently ongoing, key results are expected from its implementation. For instance, the multi-dimensional approach to tourism taking into consideration complementary tourism vertical/niche sectors will be of key relevance to Regenera4MED, as it combines several disciplines and offers a wide range of experiences, on which can take inspiration for the creation of regenerative experiences. Furthermore, the co-designing element will me fundamental also in Regenera4MED, and good practices from the techniques used in TOURAL will be relevant to create a truly open space for dialogue and exchange between stakeholders.
- TOURAL is one of the projects that will be integrated in the Cross-fertilization activities (A3.4). (EN), . (FR), Med Pearls
- 2019 -2023
- (ENI CBC MED Programme)
- The project aim was to position the Mediterranean as an integral and quality destination for Slow Tourism, through the creation of new products based on bottom-up approach with the local communities of the different Mediterranean countries involved: Catalonia, Italy, Greece, Egypt, Jordan and Palestine. So far approximately 90 companies have been supported through training activities by the LP-CTB. 2 grants for proposals will also be launched this year in order to support 6 DMC and 1 starts-up in Catalonia.
- (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalise on the slow tourism methodology, action plans and pilots. Experience especially in working with tourism 5-helix stakeholders in Catalonia: capacity building, workshops, subgrants. Furthermore, the type of experiences created through the Med-Pearls project and the methodology used to create them will serve of inspiration to create the RT experiences in activities: 2.3, Ideation through co-creation workshops; and 2.4, Concretion through mentoring and assistance. (EN), . (FR), DestiMED
- 2020 -2022
- (Interred MED)
- DestiMED brings together 13 protected areas to collectively develop, manage and promote ecotourism in the Mediterranean basin in a process of cooperation between private and public actors. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was achieved where the parties agree to collaborate with each other in order to use their respective skills, knowledge and assets for mutual benefit. This MoU concretizes the capitalisation of the Mediterranean Consortium for Ecotourism (MEC) which is hosted by the CPMR-Inter-Mediterranean Commission (CPMR-IMC) Culture and Sustainable Tourism Task Force. The Mediterranean Ecotourism Consortium bring together regional administrations to:
- - Promote relevant practices and policies to accelerate the integration of tourism and nature conservation policies in the Mediterranean,
- - Exchange of good practices and data between Mediterranean stakeholders in tourism and nature conservation. (EN), .. (FR) | There are two outputs from which Regenera4MED will capitalise: 1) comprehensive methodology for ecotourism product development following the MEET standards, which will be reviewed during the design phase (WP1) with a purpose of informing the Regenera4MED Elicitation programme . Although the ecotourism and regenerative concepts are different, they do complement each other. 2) the tool for monitoring and measuring the ecological footprint of the itinerary will be valuable for the activity 1.4 Regenerative Tourism Self-Assessment Tool (RISET) (WP1) related to the self-assessment tool insofar as informing the design phase in terms of indicators, areas to be measured, and any other important observations to be included.
- Lastly, two of the project partners of DestiMED (PP3-CPMRand Corsican Tourism Agency) are also part of the Regenera4MED consortium, which further facilitates the capitalisation and the cross-sharing of lessons learned.
- (EN), . (FR), Blue Islands
- 2020-2023
- (Interreg-Med)
- The project addresses and mitigates the effects of the seasonal variation of waste generation on MED islands as an effect of tourism. The quantity and composition of waste generated over a twelve-month period on nine MED islands will be measured and the correlation between the quantified waste generated and both the number of tourists and the presence of litter in the coastal environment will be examined. At the same time, the existing waste management structure and followed respective practices will be assessed.
- Based on the report prepared from the results derived from all nine islands a multidimensional tool will be formulated, encompassing action plans, through which this common problematic phenomenon can most effectively be addressed. This will contribute the establishment of circular economies while preserving sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean. (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalize on the empirical results obtained from the surveys conducted during the Blue Islands project: when creating RT experiences in marine areas or beaches, the data retrieved from Blue Islands can be useful in determining how these activities should be conducted, focusing them on the main identified problem: waste in the shores and the overwhelming amount of plastic and cigarette butts. Furthermore, the project’s line of storytelling (explaining how these debris and litter affect marine life and the well-being of the natural areas) can be used to frame the experience and motivate tourists to take part in these types of activities. (EN), . (FR), Alter Eco
- Alter Eco Plus
- 2021-2022
- (Interreg MED)
- The project goal was to provide tourist strategies to enhance the local sustainable development of tourism by promoting Mediterranean identity. The project results supported policy makers in making more informed and integrated decisions for the governance and management of tourism in the Mediterranean and at the same time contributed to the coordination of actions between public and private stakeholders towards the implementation of the raised strategies to create new business opportunities. (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalise on the project outputs related to the strategies for the creation of new business opportunities and improving monitoring and planning in the field of sustainable tourism. These outputs will provide a springboard for the activities related to monitoring, assessing and evaluating the impact of regenerative tourism.
- Regenera4MED will also capitalise on the ALTER-ECO PLUS Transferring and Mainstreaming strategy to pave the way towards a result amplification strategy (Act 3.4 Cross fertilization & Advisory Board (AB): and 3.5 Long Term Sustainability and Transferability) and policy impact (A3.6 Mainstream and Policy impact) in the Mediterranean
- (EN), . (FR), Take it SLOW
- (Interreg Italy-Croatia)
- 2020-2022
- “Smart and Slow Tourism Supporting Adriatic Heritage for Tomorrow" (TAKE IT SLOW) is a strategic project in the tourism of Italy and Croatia intended to manage and promote the Adriatic region as a green, smart, sustainable, accessible tourist destination aimed at promoting the concept of slow tourism. This is achieved by creating high-quality level of services and products of tourism value chain through smart specialization concepts stimulating innovation, knowledge, competitiveness, networking and CB partnership processes.
- (EN), . (FR) | The slow tourism experiences created and promoted through Take it SLOW will be taken as positive examples by Regenera4MED, serving as inspiration for the creation of regenerative tourism experiences. Furthermore, one of the outputs of Take it SLOW will be of special relevance: the database of regional stakeholders and the distribution list for the Islands of Brač. Finally, the Joint report on Smart Action Plans for the SD County will be a reliable source of information to ensure an efficient, effective and impactful implementation of actions in the pilot areas. (EN), . (FR), MEDUSA
- 2019-2023
- (ENI CBC MED PROGRAMME)
- The project addresses current sectorial challenges in the Mediterranean tourism sector, as the predominance of mass seaside tourism that is dependent on the European market and territorial imbalances. MEDUSA tackles these joint challenges via targeted and inter-related capacity building and cross-border interventions to develop and promote adventure tourism in the region. By designing and testing routes and itineraries that offer improved adventure tourism products, MEDUSA will contribute to job creation and income for local communities in the medium and long term and reveal lesser-known destinations and attract tourists throughout the year.
- (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalise on the following outputs:
- 1) Global market research and analysis report on adventure tourism in the Mediterranean region – an output which is a great resource and is an opportunity for creating synergies, when SMEs are designing their regenerative tourism products that can incorporate intelligence from this report
- 2) Public-private destination management in a sustainable manner – DMOs and the engagement of quadruple helix actors, is one of the key elements of Regenera4MED and on this point the groundwork and lessons learned from MEDUSA will be taken into consideration.
- (EN), . (FR), CHARM-Immersive experiences in European Charming Villages
- 2019-2021
- (COSME)
- The project aims to position Europe internationally as a quality and excellent cultural tourism destination by promoting its most charming rural villages by leveraging CCI technologies to provide unforgettable experiences to tourists. A transnational route of 10 charming European villages in 6 countries with more than 70 products and innovative activities. 40 companies have been supported through training activities by the LP-CTB.
- (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalise above all on the Charming villages output and complement it with another initiative undertaken by LP-CTB (project leader) of Marine Villages. By creating synergies between the two initiatives and adding the regenerative tourism practices, the project enriches both initiatives. (EN), . (FR), Winter Med
- 2019-2022
- (Interreg Med)
- The project aims to promote the transition from the current overexploitation of insular tourist destinations during the summer to an alternative, sustainable, all-year round use of these territories, by delivering a transnational strategy and the tools for changing and upgrading one of the key sectors of the Mediterranean area. The project is built on the potential of capitalisation, especially of the past Sustainable Tourism Community, BleuTourMed: analysing, assembling, adapting and testing available tools and methodologies to deliver a transnational strategy for the development of all-year round sustainable and responsible tourism in Mediterranean island destinations. The partners co-construct integrated solutions to common challenges, focusing in the common interests, beyond and besides the dimensions usually associated to the competition between destinations in a global market. (EN), . (FR) | The Regenera4MED project presents several interesting elements from which could take example. For instance, the Winter Med catalogue, which brings together good practices to foster fair and inclusive development of sustainable and responsible tourism in the Mediterranean island destinations. Furthermore, the Transnational strategy for an all-year-round sustainable tourism is also to be taken into account. Finally, Policy Recommendations obtained from the project’s results shall be integrated within the project and improved with Regenera4MED’s findings, and taken into account by partners in the consortium. (EN), . (FR), Outdoor off - Integrated models for outdoor tourism in the ALCOTRA space
- 2019-2022
- (Interreg ALCOTRA)
- The project objective is to increase sustainable and responsible tourism in the cooperation area, to enhance the existing offer through the networking of the operators of the supply chain and other stakeholders, in order to implement the integrated offer to enrich tourist experience, together with strengthening the skills of economic operators. Therefore, by increasing the capacities of suppliers of tourism products and helping them acquire new skills and knowledge concerning sustainable tourism, the offer will be widened, promoting the use of these new experiences rather than conventional, unsustainable tourism. (EN), . (FR) | Regenera4MED will capitalize on the methods used in Outdoor Off in order to improve the skills of players in the tourism sector, placing special attention to the seminars organised, the awareness raising and support activities, as well as the good practices exchange activities. Furthermore, Regenera4MED will consider the dissemination practices used in the project to reach the target audience, tourists, and build on their successful marketing strategies to promote the RT experiences. (EN), . (FR), LABELSCAPE
- 2018-2022
- (Interreg MED)
- The overall objective of LABELSCAPE is to develop mechanisms for integrating sustainability labels into broader tourism policies at national, regional and local levels, and to provide support for destination-based initiatives in the certification process. The project will not create a new sustainability label, but builds on existing certification initiatives. It also addresses the most recent challenges for certified destinations and businesses: increased recognition, complementarity with user-generated content, and digital transformation. (EN), . (FR) | Labelscape brings some interesting elements that will be of use for the development and implementation of the Regenera4MED project. For instance, the enhancing of relationships between different actors in the tourism sector, which will be carried out through he 5-Helix multistakeholder governance model. Or the practices and knowledge extracted from the implementation of Labelscape, which bring positive and empirical arguments for the implementation of the Regenerative Tourism model. Finally, the positive experiences emerging from the project will be considered and capitalized on by Regenera4MED. (EN), . (FR), Herit Data

- The project aims to measure and reduce the impact of mass tourism-related human activities on old cities and sites of particular cultural heritage or archaeological interest, including UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The project plans to develop a sustainable and responsible tourism management towards cultural heritage in Mediterranean regions, in particular by taking advantage of technology and innovation in management tools (Smart Cities), as well as other policy and social measures. A series of knowledge and solutions (Models, Strategy, Artificial Intelligence tool and App, etc.) in line with the current sectoral changes and characteristics of smart destinations will be developed, tested and transferred. This includes a platform capable of collecting data from selected sources and analyse the impact of tourism on heritage destinations. The results will also contribute to decision-making processes.
- (EN), . (FR) | The Regenerative Tourism model does not only consider environmental concerns, but is also focused on strengthening communities, empowering the civil society and protecting cultures and heritage. Therefore, the RT experiences to be developed in Regenera4MED must integrate a cultural dimension, and HERIT-DATA is a key example on how to popularize while protecting heritage in the Mediterranean region. Furthermore, the approach taken by HERIT-DATA puts forward the digitalisation of the tourism sector in the Mediterranean, another of the goals of RT, given that the environmental transition goes hand in hand with the digital one. - The project envisaged the integration of hiking, pedestrian and cycling routes, from the French Riviera to Tuscany, through Ligurian coast, with the connections between the Via Francigena and the sea. The main objective of the project was to develop sustainable tourism in the cooperation area, by enhancing soft mobility and intermodality in the cooperation region. By ensuring the existence of more sustainable transportation modes, the environmental pressure due to tourism on these areas was partially alleviated.
- (EN), . (FR) | The project activated a cross-border governance table for the maintenance of the cycling and hiking itineraries. All the activities in the project included not only regional and local authorities, but also other relevant stakeholders and, most importantly, local populations and tourists: the target audience of the project, in order to incentivize soft and sustainable mobility to mitigate environmental impacts. Regenera4MED will particularly capitalize on the communication established with the civil society, and on how to establish dialogue with these particular actors, as their behavioral changes are at the heart of the success of the project. Changing tourists’ and locals’ mindsets concerning tourism is key in order to conduct a paradigm shift and fully implementing the RT model. (EN), . (FR)
