Veengebieden herbergen een specifieke fauna en flora, waaronder heel wat Europees beschermde soorten, die zich hebben aangepast aan dit bijzondere, nutriëntarme ecosysteem. Ze spelen een belangrijke rol bij het voorkomen van overstromingen en droogte. Niet-ontwaterde veengebieden vertonen een sterke sponswerking waardoor piekafvoeren bij extreme regenval worden vertraagd en de kans op overstromingen afneemt. Bovendien beschikken veengebieden over de bijzondere capaciteit om grote hoeveelheden CO2 op te slaan in de bodem. Veenherstel voor biodiversiteit en klimaat 10 Vlaamse en Nederlandse partners werken samen om veenherstel te realiseren in de grensregio, wat de biodiversiteit en het klimaat ten goede komt! De klimaatverandering heeft veen opnieuw in het middelpunt van de belangstelling gezet. Het slaat namelijk een berg koolstof op. Bovendien werkt een intacte veenbodem als een spons, die zeer veel water opzuigt in natte periodes en die slechts geleidelijk afgeeft tijdens droogte. Hierdoor komt veen ook in beeld als buffer tegen droogte én tegen overstromingen. Bovendien zijn veel bijzondere planten- en diersoorten, waaronder heel wat Europees beschermde soorten, specifiek gebonden aan veengebieden. In ADMIRE staan het behoud, herstel en beheer van natuurwaarden in een breed samenwerkingsverband voorop, maar ook de klimaatimpact van deze belangrijke natuurgebieden zal bekeken worden via uitgebreid onderzoek. Het partnerschap bestaat uit 4 natuurorganisaties, 4 kennisinstellingen en 2 overheidspartners. 250 ha aan herstel Veengebieden staan wereldwijd onder druk. Ook in de Vlaamse en Nederlandse beekdalen lagen vroeger uitgestrekte venen die vandaag nog slechts sporadisch aanwezig zijn, en dreigen te verdwijnen door verschillende factoren zoals drainage en/of waterverontreiniging. Bij verlaging van de grondwaterstand en/of een verhoogde aanvoer van voedingsstoffen, kan de veenvorming stoppen en de veenbodem geleidelijk afbreken. Veen dat droog komt te liggen, slaat niet langer koolstof op, maar stoot grote hoeveelheden CO2 uit. Na eeuwenlange drainage is het vandaag alle hens aan dek. In Interreg ADMIRE (‘adding mire’ of dus ‘méér veen maken!’) wordt gewerkt aan het herstel van 250 ha veen in de grensregio. In Vlaanderen betreft het de gebieden de Laakvalleien en de vallei van de Kleine Nete met de deelgebieden Graafweide-Schupleer en De Zegge. In Nederland de gebieden Vallei van de Roode Beek en het Dal van de Dommel en Kleine Dommel. ADMIRE gaat voor duurzame oplossingen Veenherstel is een flinke uitdaging omdat het landschap eromheen vaak sterk veranderd en versnipperd is. Daarom wil ADMIRE ook duurzame samenwerkingen opzetten met stakeholders (zoals landbouwers) in de overgangsgebieden. Met hen worden de mogelijkheden van aangepast landbeheer met de nodige financieringsmechanismen onderzocht. Er zal ook studiewerk uitgevoerd worden naar vernatting van de projectgebieden en het effect hiervan op de biodiversiteit, alsook op andere ecosysteemdiensten en eventuele ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden. Bewustzijn en kennisdeling Verder zal het project het bewustzijn over het maatschappelijk belang van veenbescherming in de grensregio versterken en een Veenplatform voor kennisdeling en -uitwisseling rond veenbescherming en veenvorming realiseren. Het doel is dat het veenplatform projectoverstijgend werkt en na het project ADMIRE verder werkt. Naast kennisdeling zullen in dit veenplatform ook door de interactie tussen de verschillende deelnemers nieuwe kennisnoden of behoeftes naar kennisvertaling opgespoord kunnen worden. Veengerelateerde projecten zullen onder deze koepel een forum krijgen. Een handleiding met beslissingsboom zal ontwikkeld worden die natuurbeheerders in Vlaanderen en Nederland de nodige handvaten aanreikt om afwegingen te kunnen maken tussen verschillende beheertechnieken.

Peatlands are home to unique fauna and flora, including many protected species in Europe that have adapted to this nutrient-poor ecosystem. They play a vital role in preventing both flooding and drought. Non-drained peatlands act like a sponge, which helps delay peak water discharges during heavy rainfall and reduces flood risk. Additionally, peatlands have a remarkable ability to store large amounts of CO2 in their soil. Peat Restoration for Biodiversity and Climate Ten partners from Flanders and the Netherlands are collaborating to restore peatlands in the border region, benefiting both biodiversity and the climate. Climate change has brought peatlands back into focus due to their significant carbon storage capacity. Moreover, intact peat soils absorb considerable amounts of water during wet periods and gradually release it during dry spells, thus acting as a buffer against drought and flooding. The ADMIRE project emphasizes the conservation, restoration, and management of these valuable ecosystems while also assessing their climate impact through extensive research. The partnership includes four nature organizations, four research institutions, and two government partners. 250 Hectares of Restoration Peatlands are under threat worldwide, and the Flemish and Dutch river valleys, once home to extensive peatlands, are no exception. Many of these areas are now fragmented and endangered due to factors such as drainage and water pollution. When the groundwater level drops or nutrient supply increases, peat formation can cease, and existing peat soil may break down. Dry peat no longer serves as a carbon sink; instead, it releases significant amounts of CO 2. After centuries of drainage, urgent action is needed. Through the Interreg ADMIRE project (“adding mire”), efforts are underway to restore 250 hectares of peatland in the border region. In Flanders, this includes areas in the Laak valleys and the Kleine Nete valley, specifically the sub-areas of Graafweide-Schupleer and De Zegge. In the Netherlands, restoration focuses on the Vallei van de Roode Beek and the Dal van de Dommel and Kleine Dommel. ADMIRE Aims for Sustainable Solutions Restoring peatlands presents a significant challenge, as the surrounding landscape is often highly modified and fragmented. To address this, ADMIRE aims to establish sustainable collaborations with stakeholders, such as farmers, in the transition areas. Together, they will explore adaptive land management options and necessary financing mechanisms. The project will also conduct studies on rewetting the areas and its effects on biodiversity, along with other ecosystem services and development opportunities. Awareness and Knowledge Sharing Additionally, the project will raise awareness about the importance of peat protection in the border region and create a Peat Platform for knowledge sharing and exchange regarding peat protection and formation. The goal is for the platform to continue its work beyond the ADMIRE project. Besides facilitating knowledge exchange, the Peat Platform will identify new knowledge needs and requirements through interactions among participants. It will also provide a forum for peat-related projects. To assist nature managers in Flanders and the Netherlands, a manual with a decision tree will be developed, offering tools for making informed trade-offs between various management techniques.
