Het Schelde-estuarium vormt een unieke geologische eenheid die de grensstreek tussen Vlaanderen en Nederland verbindt. De streek kent een gemeenschappelijke cultuurhistorische geschiedenis, maar ook een gedeelde gemeenschappelijke uitdaging voor de toekomst. Het vereist sterke samenwerking om het projectgebied te kunnen profileren als toeristische topbestemming. (Be)Leefbare Schelde is gericht op het verkrijgen van de Geopark-status van UNESCO voor het gebied. Het doel is om de toeristische druk van de kust naar het binnenland te verplaatsen en het toeristische aanbod in de regio te vergroten. Duurzaamheid en betrokkenheid van bewoners en belanghebbenden staan centraal in de ontwikkeling van het toeristisch aanbod. Het project omvat renovatie en ontwikkeling van toeristische Parels en Poorten (waaronder Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe), de ontwikkeling van langzame verbindingsroutes en de ontwikkeling van een integrale strategie voor het verbinden en ontsluiten van het gebied. Belangrijk voor de verbinding is de doorontwikkeling van de ‘7 verhaallijnen voor het Geopark’ over heden, verleden en de toekomst van het gebied zoals ‘Zilt en zoet’, Klimaat van alle tijden’ en ‘Leven met het water’. Zo zal o.a. de Verdronken stad Reymerswael in Zeeland als Parel ontwikkeld worden, en fungeert het als kleinere ankerplaats waar dankzij heraanleg van de oude funderingen en de realisatie van een expositie i.s.m. museum Boijmans van Beuningen de stad opnieuw zichtbaar wordt gemaakt. In één van de Poorten, namelijk het Watersnoodmuseum, zal een expositie gerealiseerd worden over waterbouw in de Schelderegio door de geschiedenis heen. De expositie toont hoe het water onze samenlevingen vormde én hoe we veilig met het water kunnen blijven leven. Als Poort biedt het museum een instappunt waar bezoekers kennis maken met het bredere verhaal van de Delta. Met onderzoek naar toeristische data, de inventarisatie van bestaande en ontwikkeling van nieuwe tools wil het project gericht de spreiding van toeristen over de regio. Er wordt een integrale gebiedsdekkende strategie en actieplan ontwikkeld.

Description (EN):

The Scheldt estuary is a unique geological unit that links the border region between Flanders and the Netherlands. While the area boasts a rich cultural and historical heritage, it also faces shared challenges for the future. Addressing these challenges necessitates strong collaboration to establish the region as a premier tourist destination. The (Be)Leefbare Schelde initiative aims to achieve UNESCO Geopark status for the area. The goal is to redirect tourist traffic from the coast to the interior and to enhance the region's tourist offerings. Sustainability and the active involvement of residents and stakeholders are central to developing these offerings. The project includes the renovation and development of tourist attractions known as Pearls and Gates, which will encompass locations such as Grenspark Groot Saeftinghe. Additionally, it focuses on creating slow connecting routes and devising a comprehensive strategy to connect and open up the area further. A key aspect of this strategy is the development of "7 Storylines for the Geopark," which explore the present, past, and future of the region. These storylines include themes such as "Salty and Sweet," "Climate of All Times," and "Living with Water." For instance, the Drowned City of Reymerswael in Zeeland will be developed as a Pearl, showcasing the city's history through the reconstruction of old foundations and an exhibition in collaboration with the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum. One of the Gates, the Flood Museum, will host an exhibition on hydraulic engineering in the Scheldt region throughout history. This exhibition will illustrate how water has shaped our societies and how we can continue to coexist safely with water. As a Gate, the museum serves as an entry point for visitors to engage with the broader story of the Delta. Through research into tourist data and the inventory of existing resources, along with the development of new tools, the project aims to distribute tourists more evenly across the region. An integrated, area-wide strategy and action plan are currently being developed to achieve this objective.
