Wanneer gewrichten ernstig versleten of beschadigd zijn, is in veel gevallen de enige oplossing het gewricht (deels) te vervangen door een implantaat. Daarnaast zijn er ook jonge mensen die kampen met aandoeningen in het bewegingsapparaat. Gewrichtsvervangende implantaten zijn hier zelden een optie. In plaats daarvan worden orthesen toegepast; uitwendig gedragen hulpmiddelen ter correctie van standafwijkingen of abnormale beweeglijkheid van gewrichten of van de wervelkolom. PRosPERoS-II zet – in navolging van PRosPERoS (2016-2020) - haar traject verder en wil nieuwe patiënt-specifieke implantaten en orthesen ontwikkelen die een lange levensduur kennen en het genezings- en revalidatieproces versnellen en verbeteren. Naast heup en wervelkolom wil het nu ook de focus uitbreiden naar enkel, schouder en trauma. Het project maakt gebruik van vooruitstrevend onderzoek op het gebied van 3D-printing, oppervlaktefunctionaliteit en nieuwe biomedische materialen. Op die manier kan beter voorspeld worden hoe implantaten zich uiteindelijk in het lichaam gaan gedragen. Het project wil ook onderzoek doen naar het vertragen van de ontwikkeling van osteoarthrose en het versnellen van de genezing van botdefecten. De ontwikkeling van nieuwe, patiënt-specifieke orthopedische implantaten is een bijzonder complexe puzzel. Het vereist een brede multidisciplinaire kennis en begrip van zaken als metallurgie, 3D printtechnologie, computermodellering, mechanica en dynamica, orthopedie, biologie, regeneratieve geneeskunde, diermodellen en klinische studies.

When joints are severely worn or damaged, in many cases the only solution is to (partially) replace the joint with an implant. In addition, there are also young people who suffer from disorders in the musculoskeletal system. Joint replacement implants are rarely an option here. Instead, orthoses are used; externally worn aids to correct postural deviations or abnormal mobility of joints or the spine. PRosPERoS-II is continuing its trajectory - following PRosPERoS (2016-2020) - and wants to develop new patient-specific implants and orthoses that have a long lifespan and accelerate and improve the healing and rehabilitation process. In addition to the hip and spine, it now also wants to expand the focus to ankle, shoulder and trauma. The project uses progressive research in the field of 3D printing, surface functionality and new biomedical materials. In this way, it can be better predicted how implants will ultimately behave in the body. The project also aims to investigate how to slow down the development of osteoarthritis and accelerate the healing of bone defects. The development of new, patient-specific orthopedic implants is a particularly complex puzzle. It requires a broad multidisciplinary knowledge and understanding of issues such as metallurgy, 3D printing technology, computer modeling, mechanics and dynamics, orthopedics, biology, regenerative medicine, animal models and clinical studies.
