Het project 'Parels in Helende Landschappen' wordt gedragen door een zeer ruim en evenwichtig partnerschap. De projectcoördinatie wordt opgenomen door Landschapspark de Merode vzw. Dit project richt zich op de ontwikkeling van duurzaam toerisme in de grensregio, waar traditionele toeristische bestemmingen onder druk staan. De grensregio bevat een enorm potentieel aan onontgonnen parels van traditierijke, groene en stille erfgoedsites, landschappen en zorgdomeinen, vaak in en rondom eeuwenoud religieus erfgoed. Deze sites kunnen elk op hun manier een eigentijds antwoord bieden op de versterkte hedendaagse zoektocht naar ruimte en stilte, zingeving en onthaasting. Tegelijkertijd zijn deze sites en organisaties nog vaak zoekende naar de meest optimale manieren om hun domein, site of infrastructuur te ontsluiten voor de hedendaagse toerist en daarbij het juiste evenwicht te bewaken tussen historische, economische, sociale, culturele en/of ecologische aspecten. Twee sporen worden bewandeld om het potentieel van de regio te benutten: enerzijds zijn er de traditierijke en stille erfgoedsites en anderzijds de verborgen, maar open domeinen van zorg- en welzijnsorganisaties. Onder de noemer ‘herbronnen op de eeuwenoude tradities van stilte, rust en ruimte’ worden 2 meerdaagse wandeltrajecten uitgebouwd, verduurzaamd en ontwikkeld (Het Merodepad BE en Ons Kloosterpad NL), net zoals een aantal van de daaraan gekoppelde erfgoedsites, natuurparken en stiltegebieden. Het potentieel van al deze erfgoedsites en hun ruimte omgevingen om verdiepende en verrijkende vormen van duurzaam toerisme aan te beiden is enorm. Tevens worden er langs beide paden ‘stilteparels’ ontwikkeld waarmee wordt ingespeeld op de hedendaagse nood aan stilte en rust. De bezinnende kwaliteit van plekken in het landschap wordt beleefbaar en zichtbaar gemaakt in de vorm van iconische pleisterplaatsen in het landschap. Op een ondergrond waarin de tradities rond stilte en zorg, rust en ruimte sinds eeuwen een plek hebben, wordt vanuit deze ‘stilteparels’ een toekomstgericht perspectief zichtbaar. Hierbij worden de routes en sites op een zodanige manier ontsloten dat ze een doelgroep aanspreken die niet noodzakelijk de achtergrondkennis of religieuze affiniteit heeft, maar wel op zoek is naar aspecten als stilte, groen, bezinning of ruimte. Wanneer zorg en toerisme aan mekaar verbonden worden, gebeurt dat vaak vanuit het perspectief van het 'zorgtoerisme'. Daarbij worden toeristische mogelijkheden gecreëerd die toegankelijk en op maat zijn van mensen met een beperking of zorgnood. De omgekeerde verbinding komt echter bijna nooit voor: zorg- en welzijnsorganisaties in Vlaanderen en Nederland hebben geen traditie om hun domeinen of infrastructuur open te stellen voor de 'reguliere' toerist. In het tweede spoor ‘met zorg onderweg naar het toerisme van morgen’ staan zorg- en welzijnssites in voor toeristische ontsluiting. Zorgorganisaties hebben vaak ruime en groene sites ter beschikking die op dit moment zelden of nooit toeristisch ontsloten zijn. Bovendien kunnen zij toeristen ook mee laten zorgdragen en hen zo ook een waardevolle betekenisvolle ervaring aanbieden. Tegelijkertijd kunnen de zorgorganisaties ook hun eigen cliënten/patiënten/zorggebruikers mee inschakelen in de concrete uitbouw van het toeristische aanbod/onthaal en hen zo ook extra ontwikkel- en groeikansen aanbieden.

The project 'Parels in Helende Landschappen' is supported by a very broad and balanced partnership. The project coordination is taken on by Landschapspark de Merode vzw. This project focuses on the development of sustainable tourism in the border region, where traditional tourist destinations are under pressure. The border region contains an enormous potential of untapped pearls of traditional, green and quiet heritage sites, landscapes and care domains, often in and around centuries-old religious heritage. These sites can each in their own way offer a contemporary answer to the intensified contemporary search for space and silence, meaning and relaxation. At the same time, these sites and organisations are often still searching for the most optimal ways to open up their domain, site or infrastructure for the contemporary tourist and to maintain the right balance between historical, economic, social, cultural and/or ecological aspects. Two tracks are followed to utilise the potential of the region: on the one hand there are the traditional and quiet heritage sites and on the other hand the hidden but open domains of care and welfare organisations. Under the heading ‘recharging your batteries with the age-old traditions of silence, peace and space’, 2 multi-day walking routes are being developed, made sustainable and extended (Het Merodepad BE and Ons Kloosterpad NL), as well as a number of the associated heritage sites, nature parks and quiet areas. The potential of all these heritage sites and their spatial environments to offer deepening and enriching forms of sustainable tourism is enormous. In addition, ‘silence pearls’ are being developed along both paths, which respond to the contemporary need for silence and peace. The contemplative quality of places in the landscape is made tangible and visible in the form of iconic resting places in the landscape. On a background in which the traditions of silence and care, peace and space have had a place for centuries, a future-oriented perspective is made visible from these ‘silence pearls’. The routes and sites are opened up in such a way that they appeal to a target group that does not necessarily have the background knowledge or religious affinity, but is looking for aspects such as silence, greenery, contemplation or space. When care and tourism are linked, this often happens from the perspective of 'care tourism'. In this context, tourist opportunities are created that are accessible and tailored to people with a disability or need for care. However, the reverse connection hardly ever occurs: care and welfare organisations in Flanders and the Netherlands have no tradition of opening up their domains or infrastructure to the 'regular' tourist. In the second track 'with care on the way to the tourism of tomorrow', care and welfare sites are responsible for tourist development. Care organisations often have spacious and green sites available that are currently rarely or never opened up to tourists. In addition, they can also let tourists participate in the care and thus offer them a valuable and meaningful experience. At the same time, care organisations can also involve their own clients/patients/care users in the concrete development of the tourist offer/reception and thus offer them additional development and growth opportunities.
