De komende drie jaar wil het project in de Scheldemondregio (Oost-Vlaanderen, West-Vlaanderen en Zeeland) natuurgebaseerde groenblauwe oplossingen demonstreren (NGBO’s). Zo wil het de waterkwaliteit en -kwantiteit verhogen met oog voor een systemische aanpak waarin socio-ecologische en -economische waarden geïntegreerd zijn. Soms te veel water, maar vaak te weinig Het regent steeds minder vaak en wanneer het dan regent, zijn de buien vaak heel intens. Water bufferen kan een oplossing bieden om neerslagoverschotten langer vast te houden in periodes van droogte. Ook al heeft ondergrondse opslag een enorm potentieel, het complexe karakter van locatiespecifieke uitdagingen, beheer en regelgeving maken dit niet eenvoudig. Binnen Aquatuur demonstreren we ondergrondse wateropslag aan de hand van kreekruginfiltratie. Op die manier willen we vanuit het project de complexiteit reduceren en de repliceerbaarheid verhogen. De partners met een actieve rol hierbij zijn: gemeente Schouwen-Duiveland en de provincie Zeeland. Bovengronds worden ook zoetwaterbekkens meer en meer als oplossing gezien om te bufferen. Binnen Aquatuur wordt onderzocht hoe we zulke bekkens een welgekomen gast kunnen laten zijn in het landschap, welke ecologische stapstenen we kunnen creëren, en hoe we ecologische vallen kunnen vermijden. Actieve partners hierbij zijn: Noord-Beveland, Inagro en de Provincie Zeeland. Hoe kunnen we een mogelijk surplus aan water in natuurgebieden inzetten voor de landbouw? Kan er synergie ontstaan tussen natuur en landbouw rond wateruitwisseling? Dat wil Vlakwa - VITO samen met de provincie Zeeland onderzoeken binnen zeven gebieden in Vlaanderen en Nederland. En de kwaliteit? Onze oppervlaktewateren hebben in vele gevallen niet de gewenste kwaliteit in functie van het gebruik en de vooropgestelde milieukwaliteitsnormen. Daarom demonsteren we binnen Aquatuur verschillende constructed wetlands (CW’s) op pilootschaal en ook full-scale voor het opwaarderen van oppervlaktewater: Kennisinstellingen HZ University of Applied Sciences, Universiteit Gent en VITO WaterKlimaatHub onderzoeken welk type constructed wetland optimaal is voor de zuivering van oppervlaktewater zodat het als geschikte waterbron voor verschillende toepassingen kan worden ingezet. De constructed wetland pilots worden getest op de verwijdering van zware metalen, polycyclische aromatische koolwaterstoffen, pesticiden, PFAS en microplastics.In Oostkamp in de provincie West-Vlaanderen (stroomgebied Rivierbeek en Hertsbergebeek) worden vooral tijdens de zomer na lange periodes van droogte en daaropvolgende intense regenbuien de normen voor stikstof en fosfor frequent overschreden. Gezien diffuse pollutie de grootste bijdrage levert (±75%), werd gezocht naar een oplossing om het zelfzuiverende vermogen van de beek te stimuleren. Omdat die beek door landschappelijk waardevol agrarisch gebied stroomt, opteert de VMM als waterwegbeheerder voor een natuurgebaseerde groenblauwe en landschappelijk inpasbare oplossing onder de vorm van een full-scale CW (1,5ha). VMM doet dit samen met UGent en HZ University of Applied Sciences.De Kraenepoel (Aalter, provincie Oost-Vlaanderen) is een ecologisch heel waardevolle vijver van ±20 ha die sterk lijdt onder eutrofiëring en verdroging. Hydrologische maatregelen worden voorzien om tot een hogere watertoevoer te komen met water uit intensief landbouwgebied en run-off water van een snelweg. Dat lost het droogteprobleem op, maar zorgt voor nieuwe vragen rond waterkwaliteit. Daarom worden NGBO’s (ijzerzandfilter en wetland) voorzien om de kwaliteit van dit extra toegevoerde water (geschat 670 m³/dag) te verbeteren. Aquatuur zal bijdragen aan inrichtingsvisie, technisch ontwerp, monitoringsplan, evaluatie en stakeholderoverleg. Partners hierbij zijn de VLM, UGent, en HZ University of Applied Sciences. Repliceren – wegwerken van niet-technische barrières De slaagkans van de NGBO’s die we binnen Aquatuur willen uitrollen, is vaak afhankelijk van een aantal niet-technische barrières, zoals bestaande denkpatronen, institutionele regels, benodigde kennis, dialoog en verbondenheid tussen stakeholders en beleidskaders. Daarom willen in het project ook aandacht besteden aan oplossingen voor die minder tastbare barrières. Op basis van een actorenanalyse, systemische waardering (met focus op waterbeschikbaarheid en ecosysteemdiensten), en dialoog wordt door HZ University of Applied Sciences gezocht naar een duurzaam verdien- of waardemodel. Aan het einde van het project zal ook een praktijkgids gepubliceerd worden, zodat we op een heldere manier inzicht kunnen geven in de do's-and-don'ts, werking, kostprijs, en andere relevante aspecten.

Over the next three years, the project will demonstrate nature-based green-blue solutions (NGBOs) in the Scheldt estuary region, which includes East Flanders, West Flanders, and Zeeland. The goal is to enhance water quality and quantity while integrating socio-ecological and economic values into a systemic approach. Addressing Water Imbalance Rainfall is becoming less frequent, and when it does occur, it often comes in intense showers. This results in periods of both excessive and insufficient water. To address these challenges, buffering water can help retain excess precipitation during droughts. While underground storage has significant potential, various location-specific challenges, management issues, and regulations complicate its implementation. As part of the Aquatuur project, it will showcase underground water storage through creek ridge infiltration, aiming to simplify the process and enhance reproducibility. Key partners include the municipality of Schouwen-Duiveland and the province of Zeeland. The project will also explore how to utilize potential water surpluses in nature reserves for agricultural purposes. This investigation, led by Vlakwa and VITO in collaboration with the province of Zeeland, will focus on seven areas in Flanders and the Netherlands to determine if water exchange can create synergies between nature and agriculture. Improving Water Quality Many of our surface waters do not meet the desired quality for various uses, nor do they comply with environmental quality standards. To address this, the project is conducting pilot and full-scale demonstrations of constructed wetlands (CWs) within Aquatuur to upgrade surface water quality. Knowledge institutions such as HZ University of Applied Sciences, Ghent University, and VITO WaterKlimaatHub are studying which types of constructed wetlands are most effective at purifying surface water for different applications. The pilot projects will focus on removing contaminants like heavy metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, pesticides, PFAS, and microplastics. In Oostkamp, West Flanders (Riverbeek and Hertsbergebeek catchment area), nitrogen and phosphorus levels frequently exceed standards, especially during the summer following long dry spells and sudden intense rain. Since diffuse pollution accounts for approximately 75% of this issue, a nature-based green-blue and landscape-compatible solution is being sought. The Waterway Manager (VMM) is implementing a full-scale constructed wetland ( 1.5 ha) in collaboration with UGent and HZ University of Applied Sciences. The Kraenepoel in Aalter, East Flanders, is a valuable 20 ha pond that suffers from both eutrophication and desiccation. To address this, hydrological measures will be implemented to increase the water supply from intensive agricultural areas and runoff water from a motorway. While this addresses the drought issue, it raises new concerns about water quality. Therefore, we will also employ NGBOs, such as an iron sand filter and a wetland, to enhance the quality of the additional water (approximately 670 m³/day). Aquatuur will contribute to the design vision, technical design, monitoring plan, evaluation, and stakeholder consultation, in partnership with VLM, UGent, and HZ University of Applied Sciences. Replication and Overcoming Barriers The success of the NGBOs the project aims to implement within Aquatuur often hinges on various non-technical barriers, including entrenched thinking patterns, institutional regulations, necessary knowledge, dialogue among stakeholders, and policy frameworks. Therefore, it will focus on addressing these less tangible obstacles as part of the project. HZ University of Applied Sciences will conduct an actor analysis, systemic valuation (focusing on water availability and ecosystem services), and dialogue to develop a sustainable revenue or value model. At the conclusion of the project, it will publish a practical guide that outlines the do's and don'ts, operational procedures, cost considerations, and other relevant aspects.
