De laatste jaren hebben we steeds vaker te maken met weerextremen: periodes van droogte wisselen af met periodes van hevige regen en wateroverlast. Het zijn weersomstandigheden die ons watersysteem en bij uitbreiding onze samenleving onder druk zetten. Water is immers de basis van het leven. Water betekent niet alleen drinkwater, maar ook gezondheid, voedselzekerheid, transport, industriële processen, verkoeling en ontspanning… Wanneer door klimaatverandering geraakt wordt aan water, wordt de maatschappij in het hart geraakt. Ook de stroomgebieden van de Warmbeek-Tongelreep en de Dommel blijven niet gespaard. Hoe gaan we daarmee om? Hoe maken we ons watersysteem en landschap klimaatrobuust en opnieuw meer weerbaar? In Weerbaar Dommelland zetten we in op klimaatadaptatie door water de ruimte te geven als deel van de oplossing. We houden water zo veel mogelijk bovenstrooms vast, en beperken wateroverlast benedenstrooms. Een grensoverschrijdende aanpak dringt zich op. In het samenwerkingsverband Interreg Vlaanderen-Nederland vinden we die voor de vallei van de Dommel. Gemeente Eindhoven, gemeente Pelt, gemeente Valkenswaard, provincie Noord-Brabant, stad Peer, Stichting Museum Eindhoven, Waterschap de Dommel en de Vlaamse Milieumaatschappij werken samen over de grenzen heen aan een klimaatrobuust en veerkrachtig watersysteem in de Dommelvallei.

In recent years, we have increasingly been confronted with weather extremes: periods of drought alternate with periods of heavy rain and flooding. These are weather conditions that put pressure on our water system and, by extension, our society. After all, water is the basis of life. Water does not only mean drinking water, but also health, food security, transport, industrial processes, cooling and relaxation... When water is affected by climate change, society is hit at its core. The Warmbeek-Tongelreep and Dommel river basins are not spared either. How do we deal with this? How do we make our water system and landscape climate-robust and more resilient again? In Weerbaar Dommelland we focus on climate adaptation by giving water space as part of the solution. We retain water as much as possible upstream and limit flooding downstream. A cross-border approach is required. In the Interreg Flanders-Netherlands partnership, we find this for the Dommel valley. The municipality of Eindhoven, the municipality of Pelt, the municipality of Valkenswaard, the province of North Brabant, the city of Peer, the Eindhoven Museum Foundation, the Dommel Water Board and the Flemish Environment Agency are working together across borders on a climate-robust and resilient water system in the Dommel Valley.
