MediLink is a cross-border project in the field of healthcare that addresses the persistent disparities between Greece and Albania by strengthening cooperation, upgrading infrastructure, and promoting equitable access to quality healthcare services. Albania’s under-resourced health system and Greece’s border hospitals - burdened by an influx of patients from Albania - highlight the urgent need for a shared health policy solution. Bringing together the University Hospital of Ioannina (UHI) and the Regional Hospital of Gjirokaster (GH) and engaging seven additional hospitals across both countries, MediLink establishes a durable and scalable healthcare network. The project’s core investments include the procurement of a digital angiography system at UHI and a 64-slice CT scanner at GH, significantly enhancing diagnostics capacity and emergency care. Through a joint patient flow study, a joint action plan, utilisation of existing telemedicine structure and cross-border training programs, MediLink fosters efficient medical resource allocation and long-term collaboration. MediLink’s specific objectives include strengthening diagnostic and trauma care capabilities, enhancing healthcare system resilience, supporting professional development and ensuring equal access to medical services. By combining medical innovation, knowledge exchange and institutional coordination, MediLink sets a new standard for sustainable, inclusive and integrated healthcare in the Greece–Albania cross-border region.
