Description (EN):

The main objective of Interreg’s Program is "To increase the blue and green growth potential of the South Baltic Area (SBA) through cross-border cooperation." We plan to contribute to that goal by laying a foundation for a regional ecosystem dedicated to a leap improvement in wind energy production, while: - developing cross-border collaborative links, - fostering spin-off SMEs’ creation, and - assist the existing SMEs by making the complete project-generated knowledge available in an Open Access Repository. We propose to achieve these goals through a challenging and highly motivational competition open to SBA’s university students and assisted by project partners sharing their complementary knowledge and expertise in the subject matter. Student teams will be expected to design and fabricate proof-of-concept demonstrators of wind turbines with substantially enhanced overall efficiency, meaning the improvement of the most important wind turbine characteristics, such as: - aerodynamic efficiency, - maintenance cost, - the level of produced noise, - the level of threat to animals and, particularly for marine wind turbines: - the seaworthiness of the turbine/floater system and - energy produced per unit area of a wind turbine farm. Achieving these ambitious goals will require high student teams’ motivation, very good working conditions and an efficient support environment. The main motivation will be based on the proven since 6th-century BC adage “Give them a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach them how to fish and you feed them for a lifetime.” In this particular case, students will have at their disposal all the necessary components to achieve with their hard work excellent results, which might be also very important for their future: - a repository of publications covering most of the subject matter – to save time on initial bibliography searches, - fully equipped manufacturing and computational facilities for each of the selected teams, - assistance and general support in solving inevitable problems – from project partners, - full information produced in the project preparation phase: .stl models, design, fabrication, testing solutions and computer codes developed in the IMPETUS project preparatory and proof-of-concept phase, and - Webinars prepared and delivered by project partners, covering the basics in analysis, design, fabrication and business acumen needed to level the ground among competing teams. Business acumen knowledge will be delivered to inject a measure of practicality in the developed solutions, and to facilitate the generation of spin-off SMEs by students so-inclined, wishing to use and further develop solutions produced by the IMPETUS project. To focus students’ attention and frame the effort, the competition will be directed specifically towards perfecting the concept of Vertical Axis Wind Turbine (VAWT) – a turbine with blades rotating with respect to a substantially vertical axis. We, the partners in the IMPETUS project consortium strongly believe that the body of recent research results warrants undertaking a serious effort to facilitate wide implementation of the VAWT concept as a complementary wind energy conversion method. In particular, the aerodynamic efficiency can be improved by the application of VAWT blade pitch control, to be perfectioned within the framework of the proposed project. The following jointly developed solutions will be provided: 1. Open Access Repository storing the complete project-generated information 2. Methods developed for passive control of blades in VAWT, 3. Methods developed for individual blade pitch control in VAWT, contributing to RCO116 programme output indicators. The entire output of the IMPETUS Project will be made available as Open Access. Therefore, the project will not bring any financial benefits, nor will it give any competitive edge to IFFM.
