The AIMused project addresses a common challenge in the SBR: the limited accessibility and inclusivity in tourism attractions for people with disabilities, senior citizens, and individuals with special needs. As demographic changes progress, the tourism industry must adapt to ensure that all visitors can fully engage with exhibitions and narratives. However, many attractions still struggle to implement inclusive solutions due to a lack of knowledge, resources, and technological support. This gap limits the participation of a significant portion of the population and prevents tourism sites from becoming fully open and welcoming spaces for diverse audiences. The overall objective of AIMused is to improve tourism attractions accessibility through the development and implementation of AI-driven tools and inclusive design solutions. The project will enable such institutions to provide an enhanced experience for visitors with various needs by integrating artificial intelligence into interactive tools. By increasing inclusivity, AIMused will foster a more diverse audience, ensuring that people with disabilities, seniors, and those with cognitive or sensory impairments can participate in the cultural, environmental and educational opportunities that tourism attractions offer. This may lead to a long-term change in the way museums, zoos, science centers, etc operate, setting a new standard for accessibility in tourism. The project will deliver four key outputs. Two types of guidelines that compile best practices, research findings, conclusions, and recommendations to enhance accessibility in cultural and tourism sites.They will be themselves designed with care of plain language and universal design principles. The first guideline will provide a broad perspective on accessibility in tourist attractions, presenting a detailed framework for inclusive design, the use of assistive technologies, and effective communication methods tailored to diverse visitor needs. The second guideline will focus on the implementation of AI-powered chatbots in tourism attractions, providing insights into their development, user needs, and practical applications to improve visitor satisfaction and engagement. These documents will serve as essential resources for cultural and nature institutions, helping them implement AI-driven solutions and accessibility improvements based on tested methodologies and wide cross-border research. Additionally, the project will develop toolboxes with physical and digital tools, to enhance visitor interaction, incorporating tactile models, 3D-printed replicas, and AI-based tools. Training materials and workshops will support museum staff and tourism professionals in applying these solutions, ensuring long-term impact. Publications and industry reports will further disseminate the project’s outcomes, facilitating knowledge transfer and the replication of successful strategies across the sector and region. AIMused will take a cross-border approach by bringing together tourism experts, accessibility specialists, and AI developers from all countries in the SBR. This cross-sectoral group will be large and diverse, thanks to the establishment of local Advisory Boards, which will support the project with their expert knowledge. This collaboration is essential because accessibility challenges in tourism are not limited to one country but affect the entire region. By working together, project partners can compare best practices, exchange knowledge, and co-develop solutions that can be adaptable to various cultural and linguistic contexts. Cross-border cooperation will also allow for extensive testing and validation of the developed tools with diverse user groups, ensuring that they are effective and widely applicable. Through this joint effort, AIMused will create sustainable, scalable solutions that can be adopted by tourism attractions across the region, ultimately making cultural and natural heritage more accessible to all.
