Stamceltherapie is een veelbelovend gebied van technologische innovatie, waarin de regio MR aanzienlijke vooruitgang heeft geboekt. De therapie met spierstamcellen van de patiënt zelf staat op het punt om patiënten effectief te behandelen. Het Interreg V GYM-project was een belangrijke mijlpaal door deze therapie als eerste in de kliniek te testen. Het academisch-privaat-partnerschap van het FIT-project ("Fitness Improving Technology") (Universiteiten van Maastricht, Leuven, Luik, Hasselt en Aken, en de MKB's Milocron, Scinus, Revatis, BamVerbrugge en ReWrite) zal geoptimaliseerde technologie voor spierstamcellen verder ontwikkelen om de markt van spierziekten in de regio MR te bedienen. Deze omvat zeldzame spierziekten, verlies van spiermassa door veroudering of kanker, sportblessures en hartspierziekten. Aangezien voor de meeste spierziekten geen genezing beschikbaar is, bestaat er een grote onbevredigde behoefte met hoge zorgkosten. De regio MR heeft unieke expertise in alle aspecten van spierstamceltherapie en revalidatie na behandeling, met toegang tot alle relevante patiëntengroepen, inclusief dieren. Deze expertise is echter gefragmenteerd, en de eerste uitdaging is om het complementaire kennis van de FIT-partners te bundelen. Ieder partner zal zijn expertise in een (patenteerbare) module van de therapeutische pijplijn inbrengen. Deze pijplijn zal de productieketen van de MKB's Revatis en Milocron voor spierstamcellen vormen, maar elk module kan ook door andere MKB's in regeneratieve geneeskunde, celcultuur en gentherapie in de regio MR worden gebruikt. Een tweede uitdaging is het verenigen van grensoverschrijdende klinische expertise om klinische studies uit te voeren en de therapie verder te ontwikkelen. De ontwikkeling van therapieën voor zeldzame ziekten is uitdagend, maar door toegang te krijgen tot de regio MR en af te stemmen op therapieën voor veelvoorkomende ziekten, is dit haalbaar en kosteneffectief. Binnen 3 jaar zal het FIT-project de regio MR omvormen tot de wereldwijde leider in spierstamceltherapie, met Revatis en Milocron als koploper MKB's. Dit wordt bereikt door 3 werkpakketten die de productie en toediening van spierstamcellen innoveren en door 2 werkpakketten die de therapie naar de patiënten en klinieken brengen. Deze leveren preklinische gegevens en een 3D-model van de spier om gepersonaliseerde behandeling voor te bereiden. Drie klinische studies zullen gegevens over veiligheid en werkzaamheid leveren, met het doel op korte termijn op de markt te komen. Het project wordt strikt beheerd (5,5% van het budget), met om de 6 maanden toetsing van de afgesproken resultaten, controle van budgetuitgaven en van mogelijke patenten (3–4 in 3 jaar). Een FIT-werkgroep voor patenten zal het intellectuele eigendom garanderen. FIT organiseert naast communicatieactiviteiten jaarlijks een Meuse-Rhine Muscle Regeneration (MRMR)-evenement voor onderzoekers, artsen, ondernemers en patiënten. Het modulaire systeem en de brede toepasbaarheid maken het project aantrekkelijk voor MKB's en klinieken, en bevorderen de innovatiecapaciteit. Het totale budget van het FIT-project is 4.574.898 €.

La thérapie par cellules souches est un domaine prometteur d'innovation technologique dans lequel la région MR a réalisé des progrès significatifs. La thérapie par cellules souches musculaires utilisant les propres cellules souches du patient est proche de traiter efficacement les patients. Le projet Interreg V GYM a été un tournant, étant le premier à tester cette thérapie en clinique. Le partenariat académique-privé du projet FIT ("Fitness Improving Technology") (Universités de Maastricht, Leuven, Liège, Hasselt et Aachen, ainsi que les PME Milocron, Scinus, Revatis, BamVerbrugge et ReWrite) valorisera la technologie optimisée des cellules souches musculaires pour desservir le marché des maladies musculaires dans la région MR. En 3 ans, le projet FIT fera de la région MR la première région mondiale en thérapie par cellules souches musculaires, avec Revatis et Milocron comme PME phares. Trois packages technologiques innovant la production et l'application des cellules souches musculaires, ainsi que deux packages portant la thérapie vers les patients et les cliniques, permettront cette réalisation. Ces derniers fourniront des données précliniques et un modèle musculaire 3D personnalisé pour chaque patient. Trois essais cliniques généreront des données sur la sécurité et l'efficacité, avec une perspective de lancement commercial à court terme. Le projet FIT sera strictement géré (5,5 % du budget), assurant la livraison des résultats tous les 6 mois, les dépenses budgétaires et les brevets (3–4 en 3 ans). Une task force FIT garantira la protection des droits de propriété intellectuelle. En plus de la communication régulière, FIT organisera un événement annuel Meuse-Rhine Muscle Regeneration (MRMR) pour réunir chercheurs, cliniciens, entrepeneurs et patients. Le système modulaire et la large applicabilité clinique attirera les PME et les cliniques, favorisant l'innovation. Le budget total du projet est de 4.574.898 €.

Stem cell therapy is a promising field of technological innovation, in which the region MR has made significant leaps forward. Muscle stem cell therapy using patient's own muscle stem cells is close to effectively treating patients. Being the first in the clinic to test this therapy was a key achievement of the Interreg V GYM project. Building on this, the academic-private partnership of the FIT ("Fitness Improving Technology") project (Universities of Maastricht, Leuven, Liège, Hasselt and Aachen and SMEs Milocron, Scinus, Revatis, BamVerbrugge and ReWrite), will valorise optimised muscle stem cell technology to serve the huge and for the region MR important market of muscle diseases. These range from rare genetic muscle diseases to common loss of muscle mass due to aging or cancer and even to sport injuries and will include the heart muscle as well. As for most muscle disease no cure is available, this is a high unmet need with large health-care costs for the region. The region MR has unique, top-level expertise in all aspects of muscle stem cell therapy and post-treatment rehabilitation, and access to all relevant patient groups, including animals. However, expertise is fragmented, and the first cross-border challenge is to merge complementary expertise of FIT partners on this innovative technology. Specific expertise of each partner will be transferred into a potentially patentable module of the therapeutic pipeline. This pipeline will become the production chain of the SMEs Revatis and Milocron for muscle stem cells, but each module can also be exploited by other SMEs in regenerative medicine, cell culture and gene therapy in the region MR. A second challenge is to unite cross-border clinical expertise in rare and common muscle disease to execute clinical trials and make substantial progress in bringing the therapy to patients, creating market for the SMEs. Therapy development for rare diseases is challenging but having access to the region MR and aligning with therapies for common diseases makes it feasible and cost-effective. In 3 years, the FIT project will turn the region MR into the world’ s top technology region in muscle stem cell therapy with Revatis and Milocron as flagship SMEs, creating excellent business climates for further development. This will be achieved by 3 technology-driven work-packages to innovate production and administration of muscle stem cells, and make them more effective and broadly applicable, and by 2 work-packages bringing the therapy to the patients and clinics. The latter deliver preclinical data from mouse models of human diseases and a patient-derived 3-D muscle model, preparing for personalised treatment. Finally, 3 clinical trials generate safety and efficacy data in patients, using untreated and optimised muscle stem cells (TRL4-7), with a clear perspective of market introduction in the short or medium term. The FIT project will be strictly managed (5,5% budget), securing 6-months deliverables, budget spendings and possible patents (3-4 in 3 years) and trials. A FIT patent task force will secure IP. To capitalise deliverables further, FIT will next to regular communication activities organise a yearly Meuse Rhine Muscle Regeneration (MRMR) event for academia, clinics, entrepeneurs and patients (3% budget). The modular pipeline and broad clinical utility will be attractive for SMEs and clinics, enforcing innovation capacity and uptake of advanced technologies. The FIT budget is 4.574.898€.

Die Therapie mit Muskelstammzellen des Patienten steht kurz davor, Patienten effektiv zu behandeln. Ein Schlüsselmerkmal des Interreg V GYM-Projekts war es, als erste Klinik diese Therapie zu testen. Das akademisch-private Partnerschaftsprojekt FIT ("Fitness Improving Technology") (Universitäten Maastricht, Leuven, Lüttich, Hasselt und Aachen sowie KMU Milocron, Scinus, Revatis, BamVerbrugge und ReWrite) wird die optimierte Technologie der Muskelstammzellen weiterentwickeln, um den wichtigen Markt der Muskelkrankheiten in der Region MR zu bedienen. Diese Krankheiten reichen von seltenen genetischen Muskelkrankheiten bis hin zu häufigem Verlust der Muskelmasse aufgrund von Alterung oder Krebs und beinhalten auch Sportverletzungen und Herzmuskelkrankheiten. Da keine Heilung für viele dieser Erkrankungen verfügbar ist, besteht ein großer Bedarf und hohe Gesundheitskosten. Die Region MR besitzt einzigartiges Fachwissen in allen Bereichen der Muskelstammzelltherapie und der Nachbehandlung sowie Zugang zu relevanten Patientengruppen, einschließlich Tieren. Das Fachwissen ist jedoch fragmentiert, und die erste Herausforderung besteht darin, das Wissen der FIT-Partner zu vereinen. Jedes Partnerunternehmen wird sein spezifisches Fachwissen in eine potenziell patentierbare Komponente der therapeutischen Pipeline einbringen. Diese Pipeline wird die Produktionskette der KMU Revatis und Milocron für Muskelstammzellen bilden. Jede Komponente kann auch von anderen KMU im Bereich regenerativer Medizin, Zellkultur und Gentherapie in der Region MR genutzt werden. Die Entwicklung von Therapien für seltene Krankheiten ist herausfordernd, aber durch den Zugang zur Region MR und die Ausrichtung auf Therapien für häufige Krankheiten wird dies machbar und kostengünstig. Innerhalb von 3 Jahren wird das FIT-Projekt die Region MR zur weltweit führenden Region in der Muskelstammzelltherapie machen, mit Revatis und Milocron als führenden KMU. Dies wird durch 3 technologiegetriebene Arbeitspakete zur Innovation in der Produktion und Verabreichung von Muskelstammzellen sowie durch 2 Arbeitspakete zur Therapieentwicklung und -umsetzung in klinische Anwendungen erreicht. Diese liefern präklinische Daten und ein 3D-Modell der Muskulatur des Patienten zur Vorbereitung auf eine personalisierte Behandlung. Drei klinische Studien werden Daten zur Sicherheit und Wirksamkeit der Therapie liefern, mit einem klaren Ziel der Markteinführung in naher Zukunft. Das Projekt wird streng verwaltet (5,5 % des Budgets), mit festgelegten Lieferungen, Budgetausgaben und möglichen Patenten (3–4 in 3 Jahren). Eine FIT-Patenttaskforce wird das geistige Eigentum sichern. FIT wird zusätzlich zu regelmäßigen Kommunikationsmaßnahmen jährlich ein Meuse-Rhine Muscle Regeneration (MRMR)-Event organisieren, um Akteure aus Wissenschaft, Kliniken, Unternehmen und Patienten zusammenzubringen. Das modulare System und die breite klinische Anwendbarkeit machen das Projekt für KMUs und Kliniken attraktiv und fördern die Innovationsfähigkeit. WP1 ontwikkelt een kostenefficiënte productie van spierstamcellen via grootschalige klinische celkweken in bioreactoren/cultuurtassen en een ontdooiprotocol voor bevroren cellen, waardoor onmiddellijke toediening aan patiënten mogelijk is. WP2 zal spierstamcellen optimaliseren voor verbeterde therapieën door hun migratie naar spieren te bevorderen en voor nieuwe toepassingen door het genetische defect te corrigeren en ook de hartspier aan te pakken. WP3 test een nieuwe generatie spierstamcellen die het immuunsysteem ontwijken en therapie afgeven aan spier-, hart- en ander weefsel. Preklinische studies met (geoptimaliseerde) spierstamcellen en therapieën in muis- of patiëntafgeleid 3D-spier-/hartspiermodel (TRL4-5) tonen gereedheid voor klinische studies aan. Toediening van (geoptimaliseerde) spierstamcellen bij verschillende spierziekten (TRL6-7) om veiligheid en werkzaamheid te testen en het potentiële marktbereik van deze therapie te bepalen.

Le WP1 génère une chaîne de production de cellules souches musculaires rentable, basée sur des cultures à grande échelle en bioreacteurs/sacs de culture et un protocole de décongélation permettant une administration immédiate aux patients. Le WP2 optimisera les cellules souches musculaires pour améliorer la thérapie en renforçant leur migration vers les muscles et pour de nouvelles applications en corrigeant le défaut génétique et en ciblant également les muscles cardiaques. WP3 teste une nouvelle génération de cellules souches musculaires immuno-évitables, capables de cibler muscle, cœur et autres tissus avec des thérapeutiques. Des études précliniques avec des cellules souches musculaires (optimisées) et des traitements, sur des modèles 3D musculaires squelettiques/cardiaques dérivés de la souris ou de patients (TRL4-5), préparent les essais cliniques. Administration de cellules souches musculaires (optimisées) pour traiter diverses maladies musculaires (TRL6-7), afin d’évaluer la sécurité, l’efficacité et le marché potentiel de cette thérapie.

Expected Achievements (EN):

WP1 generates a cost-efficient muscle stem cell production pipeline based on large-scale clinical-grade stem cell cultures in bioreactors/culture bags and on a thawing protocol for frozen stem cells allowing immediate administration to patients. WP2 will optimise muscle stem cells for improved therapy by enhancing their migration to muscles and for new applications by correcting the genetic defect and targeting also the heart muscles In WP3 we will test a new generation of muscle stem cells which can be used off-the-shelf as they have been manipulated to evade the immune system and which can deliver therapeutics to affected tissues, like muscle and heart, but also other tissues. Preclinical studies of (optimised) muscle stem cells, combined with therapeutics, in a mouse or a (patient-)derived 3D-skeletal/heart muscle disease model (TRL4-5) establishes readiness for clinical trials. Administration of (optimised) muscle stem cells in treating different muscle diseases (TRL6-7) to test safety and efficacy and to determine the possible market for this therapy

FIT is designed from an industrial and market perspective. Key deliverables of GYM, which provide the foundation of the FIT project are:
1. A clinical trial with patient-derived healthymesoangioblast showed that injecting millions of cells in the blood stream is safe. Signs of muscle regeneration were observed as well.
2. Mesoangioblasts have been optimized, so they generate more and larger muscle fibres after administration.
3. Based on the successful clinical trial, the market potential of genetic and non-genetic muscle disease and the possibility to generate patents in the product optimization process, a spinoff was founded in 2024.

März 2025 unterzeichneten fünf Universitäten aus der Euregio – die Universität Hasselt, die Universität Lüttich, die RWTH Aachen, die Open University und die Universität Maastricht – ein Memorandum of Understanding, um die Zusammenarbeit in Forschung und Lehre zu intensivieren. Die niederländische Provinz Limburg ist der Motor dieser Initiative. Mit 4 der 5 Partner im FIT-Projekt steht diese Initiative in Einklang mit diesem Vorhaben und bietet eine Plattform, um angewandte Forschung nicht nur umzusetzen, sondern auch auf die Bedürfnisse der MR-Region zu übertragen.
Other In de regio Limburg, Nederland, sluit dit project aan bij de ambities van de Brightlands-campussen om een wereldklasse innovatiesysteem te vestigen, met name op het gebied van regeneratieve en precisiegeneeskunde, innovatieve diagnostiek en slimme materialen. Thematically, past FIT goed bij de Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus en de Brightlands Chemelot Campus. De eerste ondersteunt business development en vroege groeifases, terwijl de laatste de benodigde faciliteiten en expertise voor regeneratieve geneeskunde biedt, inclusief celtherapie. De aanwezigheid van Europese leiders (bijv. Lonza) in de ontwikkeling van celtherapie biedt toegang tot een succesvol trackrecord en de nieuwste (cleanroom) faciliteiten voor innovaties in celtherapie.
Other La thérapie par cellules souches est un thème important pour la prochaine « transition industrielle » en Wallonie, et le projet FIT s’aligne parfaitement avec la vision stratégique présentée par le cluster régional de santé Biowin. Dans le domaine de la Biopharma, l’accent est mis sur le développement et la fabrication de nouveaux médicaments, en particulier dans les deux axes “bioproduction” et “thérapies avancées”. Le projet FIT touche également des thèmes liés à l'axe Health-tech, notamment dans le domaine “Medtech”.
Other Le Stem Cell Network de la Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie existe depuis 2002 et comprend non seulement des instituts biomédicaux et des cliniques, mais aussi des institutions d'éthique, de droit et de sciences sociales. Cette composition reflète l'approche transdisciplinaire du réseau : en plus de promouvoir la recherche biomédicale sur les cellules souches en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie (NRW), les études éthiques, juridiques et sociales visent à garantir une approche responsable du sujet, surtout au vu des grandes attentes placées sur ce domaine de recherche à l'avenir. Au total, près de 80 institutions dans la NRW forment le réseau, réparties sur 23 institutions différentes. Les sites du réseau sont présents dans toute la Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, à Aix-la-Chapelle, Bielefeld, Bochum, Bonn, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Duisbourg, Essen, Hamm, Münster et Witten/Herdecke. En termes de contenu, il couvre toute la diversité de la recherche sur les cellules souches. Le projet FIT ajoutera la thérapie par cellules souches musculaires à ce réseau grâce à sa connexion avec la RWTH à Aix-la-Chapelle. De plus, FIT poursuivra activement les possibilités offertes par ce réseau.
Other Increasing fitness by moving is a central theme in Belgian Limburg. The FIT project will support this initiative, also for those unable to move.
FIT will increase muscle mass and power, but this is only a first step. Rehabilitation and physical exercise therapy, which are
strategic themes at UH and in Belgian-Limburg, are essential to convert muscle mass into functional quality of life. Increasing physical activity is an ambition of all EMR governments, which FIT wil help realising.
