- MedFireWise will exploit the:
- 1. tools created through MedEWsa related to scenario-based fire-spread by using FlamMap, considering ignition points and extreme wind characteristics.
- 2. the results, the experience and the lesson learnt from the pilot project between Catalonia and Sweden. (EN), Framework Service Contract For Copernicus Emergency Management Service (Cems) Risk And Recovery Mapping (Rrm) Tailor-Made Products (Flex), European Commission / JRC – (NOA) (NUMBER — 945236 – IPR – 2023) (Partner involved: NOA) (EN) | Multi-hazard and multiparametric mapping for disaster preparedness and recovery activities at large scale.
- MedFireWise will exploit the scalable and transferable methodologies related to fire risk assessment developed by NOA for the development of the seasonal fire risk prediction tool. (EN), Carmine, Horizon Europe, “Climate Resilient Development Pathways in Metropolitan Regions of Europe”, (NOA & PCF) (EN) | CARMINE bridges the local and regional scales by providing impact-based decision support services and multilevel climate governance supporting local adaptation, including both traditional and Nature-Based Solutions.
- MedFireWise will exploit the next day fire prediction tool that is developed through CARMINE to develop the seasonal fire risk prediction tool. (EN), PREFERRED “Preventing Fire Events by Rediscovering and Extending Deep Learning Methods”, Co-funded by Greece and the EU through the Regional Operational Programme of Attiki (Partner involved: NOA) (EN) | PREFERRED has developed a Platform which generates high-precision, valid & timely, visualised & interrelated fire prediction information within the WUI zones and in their neighbouring areas.
- MedFireWise will exploit the platform, the lesson learnt and the experience gained from its development for the planning and development of the seasonal fire risk prediction tool. (EN), ASIMOV/ESA (Partner involved: NOA) (EN) | ASIMOV aims to define, demonstrate and evaluate Machine Learning architectures that can identify extreme values by super-resolving satellite-based Essential Climate Variables (ECVs) that are crucial components of a comprehensive system for predicting wildfire risk and detecting and monitoring fires in real time.
- MedFireWise will exploit the following 2 outputs:
- 1. Real-time Fire Detection: to significantly improve the accuracy and granularity of fire detection systems for faster and more precise identification of active fires, enabling authorities to take swift action and minimise damage
- 2. Wildfire Risk Prediction to enhance the prediction of future wildfire risk. The activity will improve knowledge and expertise in super-resolution of satellite-based ECVs. The validation process for the system and its demonstration will take place in Greece. (EN), FireFlocks (PCF as a coordinator and main promoter) (EN) | FireFlocks (https://www.ramatsdefoc.org/en/) is an initiative from the Pau Costa Foundation that brings together all public and private agents interested in the continuity of silvopastoral practices, by aligning their various needs, and articulating a production and consumption chain of food products from herds with the added value of decreasing fire risk in woodlands with a strategic role in the propagation of wildfires.
- The landscape management and fuel reduction strategies developed by MedFireWise will be integrated into the PCF's FireFlocks initiative, broadening the scope of grazing areas accessible to shepherds within the FireFlocks network. Additionally, MedFireWise will facilitate the transfer of experience gained through the FireFlocks initiative since 2016 to other Mediterranean countries. (EN), ResAlliance, “Landscape resilience knowledge alliance for agriculture and forestry in the Mediterranean basin” (Horizon Europe) (PCF, DREAM, INRGREF) (EN) | ResAlliance aims to facilitate information and knowledge flow and increase the awareness, understanding and capacity of farmers and foresters on landscape resilience in Mediterranean countries. More specifically, the project will gather and assess knowledge and practice needs, gaps, barriers, solutions, and good practices to achieve resilient landscapes, with special emphasis on measures against hazards caused by climate change.
- MedFireWise will exploit the extensive network of practitioners within ResAlliance, utilising their insights into key barriers and opportunities, along with their ongoing analysis of management practices and initiatives aimed at wildfire risk reduction. Thus, MedFireWise will effectively guide the implementation of nature-based solutions tailored to mitigate wildfire risks. Furthermore, MedFireWise will provide contribution to ResAlliance's formulation of policy recommendations at the EU level, ensuring that these strategies align with broader policy objectives. (EN), FIRE-ADAPT, “The Role of Integrated Fire Management on Climate Change Adaptation for Ecosystem Services in Tropical and Subtropical Regions”, Horizon Europe (PCF as a coordinator) (EN) | The project aims at addressing the full diversity of fire types and their different contexts by bringing together expertise from across regions from the Mediterranean Basin and Latin America for the purpose of improving our understanding of the role of Integrated Fire Management for wildfire prevention and for enhancing natural and cultural ecosystem services.
- MedFireWise will exploit Fire-Adapt's expertise in Integrated Fire Management through the use of fire as a management tool. This will allow insight into international exchange programs, capacity building, and scientific studies, enriching wildfire management strategies across Mediterranean and Latin American countries. (EN), FIREPRIME "European Program for Wildfire-Prepared Communities", UCPM Project Grants (PCF) (EN) | Inspired by successful international frameworks such as Firewise and FireSmart, and built on existing results from European R&D projects, the general objective of FIREPRIME is to establish the foundations of an EU-wide program that promotes a culture of fire resilience among WUI communities, with the focus on civil protection. FIREPRIME will design at pilot level the program architecture and governance, and will develop and implement a comprehensive toolkit of resources that includes a smartphone app, guidelines, checklists, and educational materials aimed at enhancing wildfire resilience in three critical targets: households, communities, and infrastructure.
- MedFireWise will closely align with Fireprime's risk awareness activities, laying the groundwork for an expansive EU-wide program that cultivates a culture of fire resilience within Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) communities. (EN), Wild Pre-Pyrenees “Restoring an Alpine/Mediterranean mountain landscape”, ELSP Planning Grant (PCF as coordinator) (EN) | Wild Pre-Pyrenees will design a strategic plan for ecological restoration in the Western Catalan Pre-Pyrenees, a threatened biodiversity hotspot with a unique wealth of alpine and Mediterranean mountain ecosystems. The viability of recovering key processes absent or highly influenced by human intervention, such as hydrological dynamics, fire, or large vertebrate-driven processes, will be evaluated for a gradient from wilder cores to more modified areas. Given the inherent social-ecological nature of the impacts resulting from these processes, much thought will be given to cater for significant and enduring social and economic benefits for the region, fostering economies based on regenerating natural capital, such as natural grazing to reduce the risk of wildfires or opportunities for recreation and ecotourism.
- MedFireWise will exploit the assessment framework established in Wild Pre-Pyrenees to analyse fire as a natural process within Mediterranean ecosystems. This will allow discerning insights into implementing restoration measures to optimise ecosystem functionalities through deploying nature-based solutions. (EN), ECOPLANTMED “ECOlogical use of native PLANTs for environmental restoration and sustainable development in the MEDiterranean region, ENPI CBCMED, (INRGREF) (EN) | The project aims to contribute to halting the loss of biodiversity and to promote a sustainable development model in the Mediterranean region by enhancing the conservation of native plants and promoting their use in habitat restoration to enhance ecosystem resilience.

- -Guidelines to provide insights on the most interesting fields of research and guide future efforts towards the socio-economic objective of adapting to climate change and mitigating the impact of wildfires in the Mediterranean area. (EN), INCREDIBLE ‘Innovation Networks of Cork, Resins and Edibles in the Mediterranean basin’ H2020, (INRGREF) (EN) | The purpose of INCREdible is to address the existing research and innovation knowledge divide in relation to NWFP-service systems of the Mediterranean basin. In particular, INCREdible aims to link knowledge and foster collaboration among different groups of stakeholders, developing innovative business models and enhancing the expertise of rural regions towards the development of inclusive economic strategies.

- -Policy recommendation and guidelines leveraging knowledge transfer by implementing prescribed silvopasture practices that incorporate vegetation management, fuel reduction, and landscape design strategies in the Mediterranean basin. The ecological survey results of both Jebeil and Akkar districts (EN), Mefitu "Mediterranean forests, fire and you" (PCF) (EN) | Mefitu (Mediterranean forests, fire and you) is an educational project about the ecology of wildfires targeted at primary and secondary school students to educate, communicate, and raise awareness among students, schools, and society in general. The project works to redirect the social perception of fire in future generations, instilling the need to learn to coexist with it as another ecological factor, from prevention to self-protection, not only as a destructive force for our forests.
- MedFireWise will exploit the experience gained through the Mefitu project to inform the Youth Outreach Program, leveraging innovative educational strategies tailored to inspire and empower young individuals. (EN)
