The SB region faces a critical need to accelerate the transition to renewable energy sources and reduce its dependency on fossil fuels. The shift from traditional energy generation to sustainable and locally available alternatives is essential to energy security and climate neutrality. The Watt-a-Waste (WAW) project contributes to this transition by integrating innovative waste-based renewable energy technologies that produce clean energy while reducing carbon emissions. The project puts primary emphasis on valorising the renewable (biogenic) waste fraction, while the non-biogenic part is addressed only as a complementary contribution that increases overall sustainability and energy efficiency. By leveraging advanced waste-to-energy conversion methods, WAW develops and tests solutions that integrate into regional and local energy grids through pilot-scale installations. These will serve as real-world models for energy recovery from waste fractions, ensuring efficiency in energy output with minimal environmental impact. Pilot Cases and Key Technological Innovations: - Pilot Case 1: Gdańsk University of Technology (GUT) GUT will lead a pilot using low-temperature dry reforming to process waste fractions into a gaseous energy carrier, optimizing recovery while minimizing CO₂ emissions. The pilot will test gas purification and carbon capture to ensure efficient integration into energy systems. It will operate under near-industrial conditions to allow scalability. While the main focus is on biogenic waste, non-biogenic residues such as plastics and rubber are considered only as an additional pathway to maximise the sustainability impact of the renewable energy transition. - Pilot Case 2: Klaipeda University (KU) KU will test pre-treatment methods that improve waste-to-energy conversion. This includes combined physical and biological techniques to raise energy yield and lower emissions. Pre-treated waste will be tested in Pilot Case 1, demonstrating a cross-border approach. The pilot will also assess integration with local waste management and energy systems. Special attention will be given to pre-treatment of biogenic waste fractions, which constitute the renewable part of the energy contribution. - Pilot Case 3: Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology (INP) INP will develop plasma-based technologies for waste-to-energy conversion, focusing on maximizing energy yield while minimizing emissions and secondary waste. The system will be enhanced with advanced gasification and conversion modules to achieve high-efficiency renewable energy production. Insights from Pilot Cases 1 and 2 will refine the plasma model. The plasma system will primarily target biogenic residues, ensuring measurable renewable energy production, with non-biogenic waste used in a complementary way to enhance efficiency. The WAW project aligns with Measure 2.1: Supporting Transition Towards Green Energy by demonstrating practical waste-to-energy applications that produce renewable energy while reducing carbon emissions. Quantifiable renewable impact will be highlighted by estimating energy output derived specifically from biogenic fractions, showing the project’s contribution to Measure 2.1 and Specific Objective RSO 2. 2. The project will: - Create scalable and adaptable waste-to-energy solutions for local grids - Develop best practices and guidelines for adoption of waste-derived energy sources - Support regional energy resilience by providing renewable energy carriers - Enable cross-border cooperation in energy innovation, ensuring technologies and knowledge are shared across the South Baltic Region
