The "Blue&Green Resilience" unites five institutionally stable partners from five countries surrounding the Black Sea: three local authorities, one regional authority, and one university. These partners combine efforts and resources to support each other in adapting to climate change and finding joint solutions to its negative effects. According to the European Environmental Agency, average temperatures across Europe are rising faster than the global average, and cities are feeling the impacts of climate change more severely. Urban areas, with their dense infrastructure and population, feel these impacts even more intensely. The BSB is particularly vulnerable, with cities experiencing increased water scarcity and more frequent droughts. The project specifically targets issues related to water scarcity, inefficient water management, and the need for sustainable blue and green urban development. All partners face significant climate change challenges, exacerbated by increased urbanization, which puts additional pressure on existing water resources and infrastructure in the Black Sea cities. Through collaboration, the project aims to develop and implement effective climate adaptation actions that enhance urban resilience and sustainability. The primary objective of the project is to contribute to climate change adaptation in Black Sea cities, fostering urban resilience and water security for the benefit of residents and ecosystems. This will be achieved by promoting and implementing nature-based solutions (NBS) to reduce climate-related risks, increase climate protection, and safeguard the environment. The project focuses on reducing climate risks like floods and droughts and improving urban water retention by sharing knowledge and best practices for planning and implementing NBS across BS cities. The project partners will develop and implement data-driven, well-planned climate adaptation actions that enhance the resilience of urban areas in the Black Sea Basin. This will be achieved through NBS focusing on blue (water) and green (vegetation) infrastructure in all target areas. The expected change includes improved water management, reduced water wastage, and increased climate resilience of urban spaces, aiming to create sustainable urban environments better prepared to handle climate change impacts. The main outputs of the project are: - Cooperation of Five Institutions: Ensuring cooperation among five institutions from the BSB to implement urgent nature-based actions to mitigate climate change effects through capacity building, experience exchange, and joint awareness actions. - Nature-Based Solutions in 3 Cities: Establishing cooperation to implement NBS in Luleburgaz, Varna, and Alexandroupolis, leading to benefiting from alternative water sources for green areas and water security. This includes pilot actions for rainwater harvesting and using these water sources for irrigation, flood prevention and promoting urban sustainability. Luleburgaz Mun. will develop first climate resilient green area - Rain Garden Park, promoting water efficiency and urban nature sustainability. - Sustainable Water System Planning: Conducting comprehensive water efficiency technical feasibility studies and technical modernization plans in Anenii Noi District and Batumi Municipality to prevent water wastage and adapt water systems to climate change effects. Municipality of Batumi - will prepare a sufficient Feasibility study for the arrangement of the drainage system of Batumi Boulevard and Central Park and the reuse of accumulated water in the green areas of the Batumi city. - Water Resilience and Green Urban Spaces Roadmap: Implementing detailed analyses and developing roadmaps for Luleburgaz and Alexandroupolis to integrate sustainable green development and rainwater harvesting into strategical blue and green urban plans, benefiting over 250,000 people. - Joint Capacity Building for management of the green areas in line with the climate chance conditions - using sustainable methods and more important increasing capacity for climate resilience greenkeeping in the BSB, through the leadership of the University. - Conducting joint public awareness activities based on a cross-border cooperation approach, with the university partner developing and disseminating educational materials and training programs to enhance knowledge and encourage sustainable practices among local communities. - Ensured commitment of the citizens in water efficiency by developed critical thinking about the water sources efficiency and pilot activities with more than 500 garden owners and public institutions in harvesting of the rainwaters for urban gardening. This project based in the international cooperation approach will ensure that the cities are better equipped to manage water resources efficiently, reduce water wastage, and enhance urban resilience to climate change, ultimately benefiting residents, local authorities, and urban ecosystems of BSB.

Expected Achievements (EN):

The primary objective of the Green&Blue Resilience project is to enhance climate resilience in urban areas of the Black Sea Basin by implementing nature-based solutions (NBS) for sustainable water management and green infrastructure. Three partners will establish and pilot rainwater harvesting systems and green infrastructure in Lüleburgaz, Varna, and Alexandroupolis. Meanwhile, two partners will ensure efficient water planning for the renovation of the water system in the Anenii Noi District and optimize water resource utilization in Central Park of Batumi. Joint climate adaptation capacity building will be achieved through comprehensive training for local policymakers, experts, and citizens on climate adaptation and NBS. Additionally, Water Resilience and Green Urban Spaces planning guides will be developed based on local analyses. The project also aims to increase awareness and engagement through campaigns and the creation of accessible green spaces that promote water efficiency.

(EN) | The current project will work in synergy with the Green Urban Resilience project, that have two Turkish partners - Uzunkpru Municipality /located near to Luleburgaz/ and Istanbul University from Türkiye and Batumi Municipality from Georgia. Led be Harriet Bulkeley, Durham University, it sought to develop our understanding of what nature-based solutions can achieve in cities, examine how innovation can be fostered in this domain, and contribute to realising the potential of nature-based solutions for responding to urban sustainability challenges by working with communities and stakeholders. (EN) | The current project will promote the Nature- Based Solutions for the climate resilience of the Black Sea Cities and benefitting from the expertise achieved under the NATURVATION project will realize comprehensive capacity building, sustainable planning and community engagement actions. Sustainable climate change adaptation and water efficiency measures that will be done in Bulgaria will contribute for the achievement of this EU Strategy's objectives.
In Varna, the activities led by Technical University - Varna (TUV) will significantly contribute to the EU Strategy for the Danube Region. TUV's extensive campus, hosting several thousand students across five buildings, serves as a vital social and recreational hub for the local community. However, maintaining the campus's open-air spaces, utilized as public gardens, poses logistical and financial challenges for TUV management.
As part of the "Blue & Green Resilience" project, TUV plans to address these challenges by implementing innovative rainwater harvesting and irrigation systems. The project will involve the construction of rainwater collection systems on the rooftops of TUV's buildings, utilizing specially designed tanks to capture rainwater. Additionally, a dedicated irrigation system will be installed to efficiently water the campus's grass areas, reducing reliance on potable water and minimizing maintenance costs.
By implementing these eco-friendly solutions, TUV aims to reduce water consumption, alleviate water scarcity, and optimize public funds allocated for maintenance. Moreover, the irrigation system will mitigate soil erosion risks during heavy rains and floods, enhancing the campus's resilience to climate-related challenges.
Overall, TUV's efforts in Varna exemplify the project's commitment to promoting sustainable water management practices and contributing to the objectives of the EU Strategy for the Danube Region.
