Description (EN):

It aims at improved emergency preparedness for radiation accidents. The project will increase knowledge on the current radiological situation, by studying environmental samples collected from the area. It will also study the long-term effects of radiation to different sources of livelihood on the area, such as reindeer husbandry, natural products and tourism. One of the project´s tasks is also to increase public knowledge on the current radiological situation and on radiation safety.

Achievements (EN):

The project has published information regarding the occurrence of radioactive material in the Arctic environment and food chain, and studied long-term effects of potential nuclear accidents on the region’s indigenous population, reindeer husbandry, tourism and other industries. It is also important that the established contacts between various institutions, and this has enhanced the development of common strategies for emergency situations and routine monitoring.

Expected Results (EN):

Improved cross-border cooperation in EuroArctic region between Norway, Finland and Russia; Better understanding of common issues and challenges in emergency preparedness, environmental radioactivity and public awareness in Norway, Finland and Russia and ability to jointly mitigate challenges and risks; Information exchange and understanding of previous and current status of environmental radioactivity in the EuroArctic region; Improved techniques and methodology for conducting radioactivity measurements in the partner laboratories of Norway (Tromsø and Svanhovd), Finland (Rovaniemi) and Russia (Murmansk) and ability to adequately respond in emergency situations in the region; Improved knowledge on marine and atmospheric modeling and ability to predict the distribution of radioactivity release in case of nuclear accidents in the region; Improved public awareness and knowledge on radioactivity-related issues in Norway, Finland and Russia and internet links provided, so that general public and target groups could find answers on questions they are interested in not only during seminars, but also after.
