Description (EN):

Current situation in water supply and sewerage networks in Alytus and Grodno is complex. In Grodno city and Alytus the number of water pipeline and sewerage network accidents is big. The numbers clearly show the need for water supply and sewerage system accidents prevention increase. It also reflects the necessity to decrease pollution from economical activities (sewerage infiltration) and to manage risk and preparedness in the cases of natural and environmental disasters. This has an influence on the environmental pollution of Nemunas, as both Grodno and Alytus are situated by the longest river in Lithuania. Project aims to prevent environmental damage from the sewerage network failures in Lithuania - Belarus cross–border region cities Alytus and Grodno, at the same time increasing the public awareness on water saving. Specific objective: - to reduce the accident management time within the wastewater networks in Alytus and Grodno cities.

Achievements (EN):

The quality of sewerage systems in Grodno and Alytus was improved by purchasing modern wastewater network cleaning and diagnostic equipment. 2 vehicles, equipped with the hydrodynamic cleaning equipment and 2 units of TV inspection equipment started operating. Around 24 kilometres of waste water network were cleaned and inspected in Alytus and Grodno. The partners also prepared a common Plan for improvement of wastewater systems in Alytus and Grodno. In order to encourage people to save water, to increase their environmental awareness and to inform them about the project and its results, a large scale public campaign was organised. It contained articles, video clips, information stands and promotional items. The open-doors days and the festivals called “Clean water – healthy society” were organised.

Expected Results (EN):

The necessary infrastructure will be established for management of accidents in wastewater networks. A report will be produced about the research on the efficiency of sewerage systems in Alytus and Grodno cities. Both partners will prepare a common plan on the improvement of wastewater systems. 2 units of sewer pipes TV inspection equipment and 2 units of Hydrodynamic cleaning equipment mounted on the vehicle will be purchased and prepared for operation. A number of educational activities will be carried out.
