Development of the unique Narva-Ivangorod trans-border fortresses ensemble as a single cultural and tourist object

At the Estonian – Russian border there is a unique ensemble of two fortresses of great cultural and historical value. Their historical and cultural potential is not used in full; moreover the fortresses are dilapidating.The overall objective of the project is to increase the competitiveness of the cross-border region through development of the unique Narva-Ivangorod trans-border fortresses ensemble as a single cultural and tourist object. The sub-objectives of the project are: • Conservation and reconstruction of Narva-Ivangorod fortifications (Narva Victoria bastion and Ivangorod fortress Small Powder Granary) • Development of necessary tourism infrastructure • Improvement of quality and accessibility of tourist information • Expanding cross-border cooperation. The project Lead Partner is Narva City Government’s Department for Development and Economy and project partner is Museum Agency of the Leningrad Region.

1) Reconstruction of historical fortress structures in Narva. The reconstructed Victoria Bastion and Powder cellar: • Victoria Bastion external walls are reconstructed (2154 m²) • Victoria Bastion casemate double-level galleries are reconstructed (661.3 m²) and accommodate a historical exposition • An external curtain wall between Honor and Victoria bastions (140 m²) is restored and strengthened • The Powder cellar is reconstructed (102.19 m²) and accommodates the Welcome Centre • Green spaces are established (ca 5300 m²) • Foot-paths, grounds and access roads are constructed (1627 m²); 2) Reconstruction of historical fortress structures in Ivangorod fortress The reconstructed Small Powder Granary of the 17th century: • 1st floor - reception and information centre (69.6 m²), souvenir shop (40.2 m²), exhibition room for temporary expositions (53.9 m²) • 2nd floor - exhibition hall for the permanent exposition (211.5 m²); attic for museum specialist offices and a conference hall (187.5 m²); 2) Reconstruction of historical fortress structures in Ivangorod fortress. The reconstructed Small Powder Granary of the 17th century: • 1st floor - reception and information centre (69.6 m²), souvenir shop (40.2 m²), exhibition room for temporary expositions (53.9 m²) • 2nd floor - exhibition hall for the permanent exposition (211.5 m²); attic for museum specialist offices and a conference hall (187.5 m²); 3) During reconstruction of the Small Powder Granary: • Restored external walls (1249 m²) and inner walls (99.2 m²) • Reconstructed Stone floor on the 1st floor (163.7 m²) • Constructed 2nd and 3rd story floors (399 m²) • Constructed rib system and the roof (476.58 m²) • Installed 3 inner stairs, 15 windows,10 doors; 4) Conservation of the Quadrangular fortress built in 1492 is implemented (517 m²). The landscape of the fortress court territory (1981.7 m²) is improved; 5) 2 new tourist objects – the Victoria Bastion casemates in Narva and the Small Powder Granary in Ivangorod – are created and open for visitors. 3 working places are created; 6) An increased number of tourists and visitors of 15% (present total value of ca 177 000 coming tourists per year); 7) Equal possibilities for different groups for visiting the Victoria Bastion in Narva and Small Powder Granary in Ivangorod are created; 8) Availability and quality of tourist information is improved; 9) The living environment is improved for 75 000 cross-border inhabitants of Narva and Ivangorod; 10) Training courses for guides and museum workers in Narva and Ivangorod are organised; 11) Cultural monuments of national significance are preserved against dilapidation; 12) The landscape and access territory is renovated, the quality of access roads is improved

Narva fortress tourist infrastructure improved: o Victoria bastion reconstructed and opened for visitors as a tourist attraction/product, created exposition and visitor centre; o Landscaping and access territory improved; o 2 working places created that will function all-the-year-round.. Up to 40 persons can visit Welcome Centre at a time; o Created equal possibility for different groups for visiting Victoria bastion - good quality roads: disabled people accessibility to Narva fortress improved, increased number of tourists and visitors 15 %, the living environment improved; Ivangorod fortress tourist infrastructure improved: o Small Powder Granary of the 17th century reconstructed and opened for visitors as a tourist attraction/product, created exposition, exhibition and visitor centre; o The Quadrangular fortress of 1492 conserved; o Landscaping and access territory improved; o At least 1 working place created that will function all-the-year-round; o Created equal possibility for different groups for visiting Small Powder Granary, increased number of tourists and visitors 15 %, the living environment improved
