Description (EN):

The project involves a detailed study of existing treatment systems, determining the most appropriate cost-effective solution for each of the partners, creation and launch of two regional centers for decontamination in Slantsy and Kohtla-Jarve, which will operate at local hospitals. These centers will cater as well to the needs of all surrounding institutions which also produce medical waste: dental surgeries, private clinics, drug treatment centers, veterinary clinics, etc. The equipment and waste treatment technology in these new centers need to be modern, the process should be energy efficient and include reduction of the volume of waste being treated by way of it shredding. This will allow to process a greater volume of waste in one load, thus the final volume to be transported to the waste depository will be smaller.

Achievements (EN):

1) Two centres for processing hazardous medical waste – regional not-for-profit centres in Kohtla-Järve, Ida-Viru Central Hospital (Estonia), and in Slantsy Interregional hospital (Leningrad Region, Russia) are developed and equipped; 2) Premises required for the centre operation in Kohtla-Järve Central Hospital and in Slantsy interregional hospital are renovated; 3) 2 processing sets of equipment are purchased and installed for medical waste treatment in Slantsy and Kohtla-Järve hospitals; 4) 100 specialists from regional medical institutions in Kohtla-Järve, Slantsy and St. Petersburg are trained; 5) For each hospital partners developed their own logistics system of separation, collection, intermediate storage, and transportation of hazardous medical waste; 6) Safe treatment of potentially infectious waste originating from hospitals and satellite medical institutions is achieved. Risk of infection and epidemic during waste handling and storage is decreased; 7) The partner network is developed including 56 medical institutions in Estonia and Russia; 8) Environmental friendly disposal of hazardous waste is widely promoted due to close cross-border cooperation and joint events; 9) 3 trainings, 2 study visits and 14 public events are organised; 10) 2 thematic brochures for medical institution are printed, various articles, press-releases, newsletters, TV reports are produced

Expected Results (EN):

2 medical waste treatment and processing sets of equipment are purchased and installed in Slantsy and Kohtla-Jarve hospitals; Launch of two centres for processing hazardous medical waste; 80 specialists of medical institutions have undergone training in Kohtla-Jarve and Slantsy. 60 specialists have attended local seminars in Slantsy; study visit to health care institutions of St. Petersburg is organized for target group members
