The Middle Ages was an era in our common history with particularly strong inter-islands ties. The Baltic Region and islands were a trade and power centre. As people lived closer to nature during the Middle Ages, concepts like culture and natural heritage are natural components of the dissemination process. The project aimed at strengthening the identity of Baltic island populations and establishing a strong inter-island network. Regional development of the islands would be strengthened by increased co-operation and common concepts for theatres, museums, associations, concert halls, educational institutions, drama schools, transport authorities, ferry companies, etc. The project generates knowledge on common cultural and natural heritage of the islands. The project places high priority on regional development and focus on uniting the islands` populations and institutions. The project initiates partnerships and cooperation involving theatres, museums, local associations, eucational institutions, concert halls, drama schools, et al. Turning the project into a series of island-wide projects instrumental in heightening interests in the regions-generating increased earnings, employment, migration to the islands / regions and influx of tourists. The project gives the islands a needed boost in quality regarding culture and cultural dissemination and strengthen tourism, an increasing source of island livelihood. Also, the project will enhance the potential for future inter-island cooperation.

Achievements (EN):

The project has collected material focusing on everyday life in the 14th century. This material and the exchange of ideas have formed a platform for the development of new and improved concepts for presentation and for educational activities with children. The project has produced 27 guidelines and manuals for dissemination and educational concepts f. e. about medieval markets, historic dinners, guided tours and how to organize volunteers. The guidelines and manuals are used by the project partners in their daily work. Guides, museums, schools etc. in the whole Baltic Sea Region can make use of them as well. All the models, guidelines and manuals are presented on the project’s website. The regional development of the project islands has been strengthened through the increased cooperation between different actors. The project partners have decided to establish a network for continuing and widening the started cooperation. They are also preparing a new project with the topic “Baltic History and Nature workshop”.
