The waterborne transport to inland markets and the usage of the Inland Waterways has a substantial potential in the Baltic Sea Region. The volume of goods transport in the Baltic Sea Region and on inland waterways is constantly growing. Further to the growing transport volumes, the inland and short-sea shipping benefit the advantage to transport cargo in an environmentally friendly way. One of the objectives for the INTRASEA project is how the shift from road and rail to waterways and increased cargo volumes will be as environmentally friendly as possible. The subject of the INTRASEA project is utilizing the waterborne transport to inland markets, feeding maritime ports and unbroken chain of waterborne transport. The shift from road and rail to inland shipping is a potential for development in the Baltic Sea Region. INTRASEA is an interregional project aiming to develop and expand inland navigation and coordinate the planning of the infrastructure network for the industry as well as for the tourism-industry in an environmentally friendly way. INTRASEA works to connect and analyse future infrastructure investments in the Inland Waterways network in the Baltic Sea Region for maximum utilization. The existing tourist and logistic Inland Waterways in the Baltic Sea Region will all be evaluated within the INTRASEA project. The multi and intermodal transportation chains will be valuated to identify operational and organizational structure problems. The potential modal shift from road to inland shipping in an environmentally friendly way is also an important task on the INTRASEA agenda. Regional development is a key word for the project INTRASEA. This concerns also the use of Inland Waterways of the population for recreation and tourism. How to further develop this growing usage of the Inland Waterways is another important task on the INTRASEA agenda.

Achievements (EN):

Strengthening of networks working with inland waterways in the Baltic Sea Region and transfer of knowledge and experience sharing between the project partner countries and also other countries (GB, EST) are the direct results from the meetings and seminars arranged within the frames of the project. The INTRASEA database has been developed and is published on the projects web site. Figures of foreign trade and the modal split in the Baltic Sea region have been collected and the advantages of inland shipping and how to improve the waterborne transport to inland markets were assessed. Studies on the Transportation Chain Information System 2004 (TCIS) and consequences coordinating the transport chain have been conducted. Cases on Environmental Studies and Modal Shift Scenarios have been evaluated and included in the final reports. An assessment of the methods for Finland, Germany, Poland, Russian Federation and Sweden, discussing the similarities and deviations between the systems of justification of infrastructure investments, has been performed. A case study was initiated in Russia and a flooding study is produced. Tourism facts and trends in the BSR as well as accessibility of BSR inland waterways for tourism and recreation have been evaluated. The INTRASEA final report summary was translated to national languages with the aim to reach a larger target group.
