Description (EN):

LICI aims to strengthen communities (Cties) by reclaiming public space for public use. Following many crisis. a lot of cities around North West Europe (NWE) have launched large & expensive urban renewals & revitalizations. Strangely enough. these have led to the emergence & proliferation of deserted places. underused. misused or simply not used at all. Beautifully designed. but not devised for people. these spaces. uncared for & subject to daily damage. create as many ruptures in NWE city cores leading to dismembered centres & a worrying absence of bonds between districts. clusters & Cties. All this impede proper economic (eco) development (dvpt). Not used or only used as compulsory transit passages. ignored spaces generate a vicious circle & feed NWE’s lack of attractiveness. Similar issues on comparable places are faced in NWE without one stakeholder on his own being able to counterbalance this declining trend. LICI proposes an appropriation of the public domain by Cties. To this end. public space will be (re)thought following Cties’ interests. needs & expectations. targeting potential users according to their shared values. to create an atmosphere users feel. experience & identify to. Spaces will be designed for people. By doing so. LICI aims to (re)create links between districts. clusters & Cties & generate substantial eco dvpt thanks to the regain of public space by Cties. To this end. LICI will utilize the innovative concepts of place making & place management. which are new in NWE. in order to change ignored places into attractive destinations. where people choose to spend their time. Coming from overseas (Australia. New Zealand. USA). these concepts have turned many dull. empty spaces into highly competitive destinations. Via place making. public spaces gain an identity & are regained by Cties who recognize themselves in a unique & specific environment. tailored to their expectations & needs.

Achievements (EN):

This year is the fourth and last year of the project. 8 partners from 4 different countries have been working together and exchanging on common issues together with users, and key stakeholders. Partners share their expertise, experience and knowledge to set up pilot tests, actions of place making and long-term structures of place management that will guarantee the long-term success of public spaces. The goal appears to be reached, many actions are gonna be reiterated on a longer run. A 'Toolbox' will be available both online and on a printed medium in September 2014. Created to highlight and describe all processes that have been implemented during this four years project, it’s a tool meant to give wise advices to any person interested in reproducing our place making and place management solutions.
