The world seaborne trade has been developed in the last decade. mainly due to globalization and development of emerging countries. This world growth has an influence on the development of ports and maritime terminals. Within North West Europe (NWE). few ports are able to keep pace with this growth. despite the importance of this coastal area (stretching from Ireland to the Netherlands (see Figures 6. 7. 8 in Annex)). The main problem of the development in the ports and terminals of the NWE area depends on the internal traffic management and space optimisation inside a confined space. A solution was proposed for a selection of major ports such as Rotterdam. Düsseldorf and Hamburg. to automate the handling of goods using automatic guided vehicles (AGV). This solution has resolved some relative internal traffic issues. although it has highlighted several limitations: • The port infrastructure would need to be adapted to use AVG’s. making it difficult to generalise about how this would work within other ports of Europe; • The AGV system uses an internal combustion engine which increases the levels of pollution to the immediate confined area; • Failure management of such a transport system is not taken into account. so when a vehicle is in a failure state. it blocks the path of subsequent vehicles. Thus. the InTraDE project contributes to improving the traffic management and space optimisation inside confined space by developing a clean and safe. intelligent transportation system. This system would adapt to the specific environment requirements. and could be transferred to different sizes of ports and terminals. The transportation system operates in parallel with virtual simulation software of the automated site. allowing a robust and real-time supervision of the goods handling operation.

Achievements (EN):

An Intelligent Autonomous Vehicle (IAV) has been produced and tested in the ports of Radicatel (France), Dublin (Ireland), and Oostende (Belgium), A real-time Simulation and supervision platform has also been produced, and a recent design refinement undertaken. An improved version of the software has also been developed, Algorithms on the simulation platform and on the real intelligent transportation system (ITS). These are relevant to different functional and operating modes of the IAV system, A socioeconomic impact study has been conducted and its results suggest a clear demarcation of the proposed electrical IAV system compared with existing port container routing systems, hence demonstrating the viability of the developed system, Scientific and other communication articles in conferences and academic journals, newspapers, and specialised magazines have been published, The workings of transnational collaboration have been reported in order to serve as "lessons learned" for future projects, The project completed the transferability actions of the developed IAV concept to other application domains and its related intellectual property issues. Consequently: A significant knowledge capital has been developed in the context of the project partnership. It requires future use and leverage. As a result, a two year International Masters degree in robotics and transport is proposed for the next academic year. This Masters degree course has recently received accreditation from the French ministry of education and scientific research and is delivered jointly by two elite engineering institutions in France: "Polytech-Lille" and "Ecole Centrale de Lille". The course is taught in english and builds on the developments of project InTrade. It is geared primarily towards a specialisation in field robotics and intelligent transportation, thus it is designed to equip students with a multitude of theoretical knowledge in diverse subject matters which integrate the concepts of integrated design and intelligent prototyping. This knowledge is combined with a range of practical applications through technological test benches made available at both institutions for the purpose of experimentation and further develoment. These test benches include holonomic robots, robot manipulators, intelligent autonomous vehicles, etc.
