The main project aims at mobilizing the innovation potential related to unutilized biological resources in the Agro-Industrial value chains. The project will thus strengthen the SME innovation capacity by the means of cross-border knowledge transfer, advisory activities and preparation of pilot projects and investments. Bioeconomy is the production and utilisation of biological resources, innovative biological processes and principles to sustainably provide goods and services across all economic. Thus the bioeconomy can be described as the next economic development wave shaping the post-fossil society, in which new biomass-based materials and products are introduced. On this background the bioeconomy and its biological resources represent a unique platform for innovation efforts and business opportunities. In many countries SMEs are key drivers of biomass-based innovation. Yet, there is a need to empower the enterprises and other actors to participate in bioeconomy development in the South Baltic Area. The countries in the South Baltic Area fall into four different bioeconomic categories. The bioeconomy in Poland is dominated by agriculture, whereas Danmark and Germany are geared towards the Agro-Food Industry and Bio-based chemical industries. Sweden´s turnover from the bioeconomy is primarily generated form the forestry and the related industries. And Lithuania is categorised as a non-specialised county. When it comes to the regions located within the South Baltic Area there are though many similarities. They all have a large share of agriculture, and there are a number of urban areas and agglomerations, in which food manufacturing and chemical plants are situated. The seed funding is needed in order to shape a new comprehensive cross-border partnership, establish an overview of the present bioeconomy challenges and opportunities in the regions in the South Baltic Area, and to ensure a focused main project.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main output of the Seed Money will be project concept paper of the future project in which the main goal will aim at unlocking innovation potentials related to unutilised and new biological resources, especially by-products and residuals found in and along the Agro-Food Industrial value chains, such as grain production (especially wheat straw), sugar production, vegetable production and manufacturing etc. The materials and their building blocks deriving from these value chains might be converted into a variety of innovative food and non-food products. The overall objective of the main project is to identify those potentials, point out and prepare the most relevant and economically attractive opportunities for piloting and investments, seen in a cross-border perspective. Here the cross-border cooperation and innovation transfer can play a pivotal role, as an outcome of experience exchange, development of new knowledge and co-creation of innovative and solutions adapted to the specific situations and framework conditions in the participating regions. Based on the insights, knowledge sharing on good practices, analyses and co-created solutions, the project intends to strengthen the SME innovation capacity. Thereby the focus will be on the most promising innovation and market maturation options, in the sense that all activities carried out in the main project will bring the biomass-based products, production processes and business models closer to the commercial stage. In the seed money phase these potentials will be screened and assessed tentatively, whereas in the main project these potentials will be further explored, analysed, developed and disseminated.
