The Baltic Sea faces vast urgent challenges due to a surplus of phosphorus, nitrogen and pollutants (by being one of the busiest maritime areas in the world). The ongoing threat of a diminishing biodiversity and increased eutrophication (mainly due to NH3, NO?, PO4) is most likely the biggest challenge that the region currently faces from an environmental perspective. In addition to this, there has been a recent increase in awareness of the amounts of microplastics, up to 40 tonnes annually, being released to the Baltic Sea and the consequences these particles have on the maritime environment. At the same time the Baltic Sea Region is one of the most innovative regions in the world when looking at new green technologies. Using this interregional potential to solve the above mentioned challenges is what we want to achieve in the project “Reviving Baltic Resilience (RBR)”. By using prior experiences from previous EU projects (Euroslam for example) as well as acquiring new data and knowledge, we aim to look at proactive methods/technologies for preventing nutrients/pollutants and microplastics reaching the Baltic Sea. Being proactive and focusing on the prevention (rather than reacting and trying to clean maritime environment) will be of key importance if we want to revive our biggest regional asset, the Baltic Sea. The reason why we are applying for the seed financing is in order to be able to build a solid and diverse partnership which we feel is one of the most crucial success factors in an interreg-project. It is also of highest importance to be able to create the most beneficial activities with these partners, creating an inclusive environment to tackle the issues mentioned above. Being an University and not having the financial liquidity to do this by ourselves, we feel that that the seed financing is the only tool available to us in proceeding with this cross-border project.

Expected Results (EN): RBR will increase the usage of green technologies to prevent pollutants from reaching the Baltic Sea and host a platform where installations can be showcased and cross-border knowledge exchange together with best case solutions are promoted.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main output of the Seed Money will be project concept paper and Application Form of the future project in which the main outputs will be focused on the objective by creating a 3-step process. The first step is the gathering of information from prior initiatives as well as retrieving new knowledge through cross-cooperation to be able to isolate and focus on the biggest challenges in the region based on implementation potential, both when it comes to needs, as well as available green solutions. The second step is to create testbeds/pilot projects where the solutions can be tested and implemented by the involved partners in the project where business viability plans for the solutions will be created. The final step is to promote the knowledge using cross-border networks where visits, workshops and matchmaking events will be conducted to jointly benefit from the project activities. The main envisaged results of the project will be to create a holistic overview/map of the most viable and beneficial solutions available to achieve a resilient and revived Baltic Sea. By having a triple-helix approach, the goal is to involve all necessary partners in the project through the partnership, associated organizations and cooperation with other projects and networks. We envision having implemented at least two testbeds/pilot projects in three or more countries where we have proven the economic and environmental viability of the installations. The project will result in cross-border matchmaking events, visits and seminars where the solutions are discussed and promoted to the entire South Baltic Programme area. A platform/arena will be created to promote further development and cooperation, both for stakeholders in the South Baltic Programme area as well as attracting outside partners, once the project has ended as well.
