The European Commisson’s Blue Growth agenda for the Baltic Sea Region identifies aquaculture as one of the most promising sectors of the region’s maritime economy in terms of growth and job potential. In the South Baltic area, however, aquaculture is not a widespread established sector yet. There is also a clear territorial disparity in introducing innovative and environmentally friendly production technologies that could help to create added-value and increase the sector’s international competitiveness. InnoAquaTech seeks to contribute to the cross-border development and transfer of such innovative and sustainable aquaculture technologies across the South Baltic area and offer SMEs all over the region access to state-of-the-art technology, know-how, expertise and financing models. Departing from the results of AQUAFIMA and SUBMARINER, special emphasis will be given to recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and innovative combinations of RAS systems with e.g. plant production (aquaponic systems) and/or renewable energy production. The project partners will • identify best practices of integrated aquaculture systems and evaluate their agroeconomic and environmental impact, • develop and implement an SME service package (consisting of e.g. matchmaking events, trainings, study visits and an innovation check tool) that shall be sustained by a South Baltic aquaculture alliance beyond the project lifetime, • implement four aquaculture pilot cases to gain hands-on experience on the actual regional potential of different innovative and sustainable aquaculture systems. InnoAquaTech will result in an increased innovation capacity of the project’s target group, which consists of SMEs along the aquaculture and aquaponic value chain as well as related support organisations. By directly involving them in the project implementation, InnoAquaTech will help SMEs to develop and implement cross-border value chains that strengthen the South Baltic area’s aquaculture sector as a whole.

Achievements (EN):

InnoAquaTech promoted cross-border development and transfer of innovative sustainable and environmentally friendly aquaculture technologies in the South Baltic Region. InnoAquaTech project partners have the scientific expertise and financial know-how to act as advisors and facilitators of aquaculture technology. Grounding our work on the results on the INTERREG projects AQUAFIMA and SUBMARINER, the aim was to promote recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) as well as innovative combinations of these with, for example, plant production and/or renewable energy production. In the course of doing so, we endeavoured to: - Identify best practices of integrated aquaculture systems and evaluate their agro-economic impact; - Create a network of stakeholders; - Develop and implement an SME service package consisting of matchmaking events, trainings, study visits and an innovation check tool; - Implement four pilot projects to gain hands-on experience in innovative aquaculture. What we aimed to achieve: We aimed to implement four successful pilot projects, to showcase the viability of a strong aquaculture economy in the South Baltic Region. These projects also served as decision support for potential investors and the project itself was thus a truly useful service for SMEs. As a result, SMEs and their support organisations gained increased innovation capacity as well as being more able to develop and implement cross-border value chains. This in turn helped strenghen the South Baltic area’s aquaculture sector and contribute to more sustainable food production. To facilitate closer cooperation and knowledge exchange between different stakeholders, a transnational and cross-sectoral network South Baltic Aquaculture Alliance was established.

Expected Results (EN):

The project will result in an increased innovation capacity of the project’s target group which consists of companies along the aquaculture value chain (e.g. aquaculture producers, technology providers, processing factories, fishermen and farmer, energy producers) as well as related support organisations (e.g. technology transfer centres, local / regional development agencies). This increased innovation capacity will be achieved by: *providing the target group with evidence-based decision support for optimal combinations of innovative aquaculture technologies to reach economic feasibility, and to create added value through the InnoAquaTech technology pool, *providing the target group the opportunity to benefit from cross-border networking, training and consultancy services through the InnoAquaTech SME service offer, *developing concrete feasibility studies and sustainable aquaculture business models for innovative aquaculture ventures through a number of regional pilot cases.

Expected Outputs (EN): 1) InnoAquaTech SME service offer, 2) South Baltic aquaculture alliance. 3) InnoAquaTech regional pilot. 4) SMEs directly and actively involved in the regional pilot activities.
