For an industry oriented economy a qualitatively and quantitatively reliable supply of energy is a high priority. Energy transition requires accelerated use of regional resources. This implies the diversification of energy sources and use of all existing potentials. In the global network of economic structures an independent power supply is becoming increasingly significant even at the expense of a higher cost of energy. A more intensive use of alternative fuels makes a significant contribution to improving environmental performance. This concerns both CO2 and pollutant emissions. A particular technical challenge associated with the energy transition is the storage and distribution of high energy volume, for example in the form of liquid biogas (LBG) or natural gas (LNG). This is a specific technological issue that the project will address, jointly developing solutions and creating a technical/technological platform for a broader and more universal use of liquefied gas (LBG/LNG) as an alternative fuel in the future. This essentially requires the redevelopment of a whole range of technical products and services in three particularly relevant technologies (R&D product lines): production, distribution (incl. transportation) and use. Technical solutions for use of LBG/LNG as fuel and energy storage can specifically be associated with: a) production of appropriate fuel tanks, stationary storage tanks and transport tanks, b) upgrading the raw biogas (ca. 35-60% menthane) to biogas (with ca. 95% methane) with fuel quality, c) liquefaction of the metane d) temporary storage and final disposal for usage, e) development of complete supply chains, f) innovative solutions for time-critical logistics, g) development and production of special vehicles for the logistics chain. Seed money funds will be used to identify relevant stakeholders in each region or country in order to enable creating partnership and defining scope of the project to be prepared for the South Baltic Program.

Expected Results (EN): The project will contribute to the development and application of cross-border technology-based solutions towards decentralised (regional) energy conversion with simultaneous local consumption and distribution of alternative fuels.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main output of the Seed Money will be project concept paper and Application Form of the future project in which the main outputs will be focused on contribution to solving technical problems of a decentralized (regional) energy conversion with simultaneous local consumption including transport of alternative fuel. This provides an interface with the growing number of biogas plants and LNG terminals as a potential backup (in case of lack of biogas) to land-based complementary use of LBG / LNG as fuel. The contribution of the project is foreseen in addressing the existing technical and socioeconomic problems / challenges consisting of creation and strengthening value chains as well as opening up the existing regional energy resources by a novel use of technical / technological solutions. The main objective of a future project is to involve and link companies and other relevant partners, such as research institutions, and regional policy makers to unlock development and implementation of cross-border technological solutions and products related to the LBG (alternatively LNG) as a fuel for the future. Project’s activities will result in connecting business, scientific institutions and decision-makers and increasing awareness of the project target group about benefits from technological possibilities towards more sustainable regional development. The project will also aim at unlocking investments in LBG/LNG related fields based on cross-border cooperation of business and science (based on networking platform and creation of common cross-border products and services). Depending on the results from the seed money activities there are 2 possible scenarios for the future project - either the focus will be on the technological aspects or business development /internationalisation.
