Water is een cruciale grondstof voor de landbouw. Verschillende landbouwgebieden kampen door de toenemende klimaatsverandering echter met een algemene verdrogingsproblematiek. Daarnaast werd grondwater jarenlang overmatig opgepompt waardoor zowel kwantiteit als kwaliteit bedreigd zijn. De schaarste aan gezond grondwater zorgt ervoor dat de land- en tuinbouwsector voor de nodige uitdagingen komt te staan. Zowel in Nederland als in Vlaanderen zijn landbouwers daarom pro-actief op zoek naar alternatieve waterbronnen. Ook voor de industrie is water onmisbaar: zowel in Nederland als Vlaanderen hebben bedrijven water nodig voor hun procesvoering waarna het wordt gezuiverd en geloosd op oppervlaktewater. ‘F2AGRI’ zet zich in om industrieel gezuiverd afvalwater – alias effluent - ter beschikking te stellen op de akkers van land- en tuinbouwers. Het is een duurzame benadering in termen van tijdsinvestering, energie, transport en waterhergebruik. Bierbrouwerij Bavaria (Lieshout, Nederland) en groenteverwerkend bedrijf Ardo (Ardooie, Vlaanderen) nemen deel aan dit traject. Hoewel beide familiebedrijven geen verplichtingen hebben omtrent het ter beschikking stellen van effluent en ook geen onmiddellijke return zullen krijgen, streven ze naar duurzaam watergebruik zowel binnen als buiten de fabriek. Bij Bavaria zal een waterverdeelsysteem geïnstalleerd worden, bij Ardo een irrigatienetwerk. Een 120tal landbouwers zullen uiteindelijk gebruik kunnen maken van het gezuiverde water.

Water is a crucial resource for agriculture. Due to increasing climate change, however, various agricultural areas are facing a general problem with drying out. What is more, for many years, there has been an excessive extraction of groundwater that threatens both quantity and quality. The scarcity of healthy groundwater poses challenges for the agricultural and horticultural sectors. In both the Netherlands and Flanders, farmers are therefore proactively seeking alternative water sources. Water is also indispensable for industry: in both the Netherlands and Flanders, companies need water for their processes, after which it is purified and discharged into surface water. F2AGRI aims to make industrially-purified wastewater – otherwise known as effluent – available on farmers' and horticulturists' land. It is a sustainable approach in terms of time investment, energy, transport and water reuse. The Bavaria brewery (Lieshout, the Netherlands) and the vegetable processing firm of Ardo (Ardooie, Flanders) are taking part in this project. Although neither of the two family firms has any obligation with regard to providing effluent and they will not earn any immediate return, they are striving for sustainable water use both within and outside the plant. A water distribution system will be installed at Bavaria and an irrigation network at Ardo. 120 farmers will eventually be able to use the purified water.

Ook voor de industrie is water onmisbaar: zowel in Nederland als Vlaanderen hebben bedrijven water nodig voor hun procesvoering waarna het wordt gezuiverd en geloosd op oppervlaktewater. ‘F2AGRI’ zet zich in om industrieel gezuiverd afvalwater – alias effluent - ter beschikking te stellen op de akkers van land- en tuinbouwers. Het is een duurzame benadering in termen van tijdsinvestering, energie, transport en waterhergebruik. In Nederland wordt het effluent van Bavaria naar de akkers verdeeld via de aanwezige waterlopen (o.a. Goorloop en Wilhelminakanaal). Het effluent wordt geloosd in een waterloop en vervolgens kunnen landbouwers het water op hun perceel inlaten via omgekeerde drainage. Bij dit systeem worden drainagebuizen ondergronds geplaatst en via een regelput wordt het grondwaterpeil gecontroleerd. Ondertussen werden reeds 11 dergelijke sub irrigatiesystemen aangelegd. Daarnaast werd ook een sloot ten Noorden van Lieshout verlengd om het effluent van Bavaria ook in die richting bij de landbouwers te krijgen. In Vlaanderen wordt het effluent van Ardo via een hoge druk leidingnetwerk verdeeld. Er werd een bufferbekken (150 000 m³), een pomphuis en 24 km leidingnetwerk aangelegd. Het F2AGRI project beoogt om een 120tal landbouwers te overtuigen om gebruik te maken van het gezuiverde water van respectievelijk Bavaria en Ardo. Deelnemende landbouwers hebben zich ondertussen verenigd in een coöperatie. In Nederland werd de coöperatie Boer, Bier, Water opgericht en telt inmiddels 30 leden; in Vlaanderen werd de coöperatie INERO CVBA opgericht en telt 50 leden.

'F2AGRI' is committed to making industrially purified wastewater - alias effluent - available in the fields of farmers and horticulturists. It is a sustainable approach in terms of time investment, energy, transport and water reuse. Beer brewery Bavaria (Lieshout, Netherlands) and vegetable processing company Ardo (Ardooie, Flanders) are participating in this process. Although both family businesses have no obligations regarding the provision of effluent and will not receive an immediate return, they strive for sustainable water use both inside and outside the factory. In the Netherlands, the effluent from Bavaria is distributed to the fields via the existing waterways (including Goorloop and Wilhelminakanaal). The effluent is discharged into a watercourse and then farmers can release the water into their fields via reverse drainage. With this system, drainage pipes are placed underground and the groundwater level is monitored via a control well. In the meantime, 11 such sub-irrigation systems have already been constructed. In addition, a ditch north of Lieshout was also extended to get the effluent from Bavaria to farmers in that direction. In Flanders, Ardo's effluent is distributed via a high-pressure pipeline network. A buffer basin (150,000 m³), a pump house and 24 km of pipe network were constructed. The F2AGRI project aims to convince around 120 farmers to use the purified water from Bavaria and Ardo respectively. Participating farmers have now united in a cooperative. The Boer, Beer, Water cooperative was founded in the Netherlands and now has 30 members; The cooperative INERO CVBA was founded in Flanders and has 50 members.
