The bee population is diminishing dramatically. Flanders and the Netherlands are currently experiencing a serious pollination crisis, which is having major ecological and economical consequences. The growing of apples, pears and cherries depends highly on pollination. Areas such as Hageland, de Haspengouw in Flanders, Dutch Limburg and Zeeland are affected. Meer Natuur Voor Pittig Fruit will encourage fruit growers to install nest blocks, for example. Other concrete solutions are being found for other useful species, such as bats, dormice and mustelids. The aim is to rebuild a stable population of pollinating insects within plots and companies and throughout the region. This natural garden management – based on an ecological model that pools the latest Flemish and Dutch knowledge – aims to combat the honeybee decline. It also offers opportunities for pest control using fewer chemicals. The project, led by Regionaal Landschap Zuid-Hageland, involves managers of biotopes in the wider vicinity of the orchards, such as municipalities, water boards and land managers.

De populatie van bijen gaat sterk achteruit. Vlaanderen en Nederland beleven momenteel een heuse bestuivingscrisis die grote ecologische en economische gevolgen met zich mee brengt. De teelt van appels, peren en kersen is echter erg afhankelijk van bestuiving. Vooral gebieden als het Hageland, de Haspengouw in Vlaanderen, Nederlands Limburg en Zeeland voelen de gevolgen. ‘Meer natuur voor pittig fruit’ zal fruittelers aansporen om bijvoorbeeld nestblokken te installeren. Voor andere nuttige soorten als vleermuizen, eikelmuizen en marterachtigen worden andere concrete maatregelen gerealiseerd. Op die manier tracht men opnieuw een stabiele populatie van bestuivende insecten op te bouwen binnen percelen, bedrijven en de brede regio. Dit natuurlijk tuinbeheer – vanuit een ecologisch model dat de nieuwste Vlaamse en Nederlandse kennis bijeenbrengt – zal de sterfte van de honingbij tegengaan. Het biedt daarnaast kansen voor plaagbestrijding met minder inzet van chemicaliën. Bij het project, getrokken door het Regionaal Landschap Zuid-Hageland, worden beheerders van biotopen in de ruimere omgeving van de boomgaarden betrokken, zoals gemeenten, waterschappen en terreinbeheerders.

Achievements (EN):

The cultivation of apple and pear is very dependent on pollination. The regions where this project was rolled out concern the main production areas for apple and pear in the Netherlands and Flanders. The project encouraged growers to increase pollination security by attracting wild bees in the orchard and building populations of it. As expected, these were mainly occupied with masonry bees. It is not certain whether growers will have enough honey bees available in the future (winter mortality). However, these masonry bees prove useful in all circumstances: in cold or windy weather, honey bees hardly fly, masonry bees do. They are also significantly more efficient pollinators. They also fly on the pear Conférence as opposed to honey bees. More pollination in this pear leads to more pit formation, and thus for a better fruit shape and size.This could also be established in the context of this project. It is surprising that in each region this population-building took place very similar (spontaneous from surrounding nature). Especially considering the various types of masonry bees (the horned masonry bee in Flanders, the red mound bee in the Dutch regions). The growers are more difficult to convince to plant flowery hedges, which are important to keep these pollinators in the orchard (food should also be present before and after the blossom). This is mainly due to lack of space (every m² is ‘used’). A thorough inventory shows that ‘free’ space is often found for these hedges. Because of pruning in ‘parasol shape’, little effective ground space is also needed for a yet wide-growing flowery hedge. The benefit to natural pest fighters is certainly relevant: hedges are very useful for this. This could also lead to more careful use of plant protection products. This could not be established effectively in the context of this project. All the experience from the project, and relevant knowledge from studies, was included in a well-groomed brochure with which other interested growers can get started. However, additional follow-up is needed to set this technique up to date: the cabinet content (nest material for bees, preferably bamboo) should be replaced every few years. RLZH will continue to follow this up with at least 20 out of the 30 growers of the region over the next 2 years (2020-21) and will ensure that this knowledge is disseminated to growers in the other regions. The immediate surroundings of the orchards also determine wild bees: in roads and gardens there is still much “profit” to be realised regarding pollen and nectar supply. The project proved to be an ideal coat rack to convince municipalities to take specific nature measures in public domains. The project was presented at a multitude of events, both “professional” (after fruit growers) and for a wide audience: open door days, blossom parties, info evenings, and 2 symposiums. ‘Bees and pollination’ appear to be a permanent ‘hot topic’ around which a broad audience can be easily sensitised. This project provides a reason to continue with this in the following years. The fruit growers with populations of wild bees will remain a grateful sign for other growers to work with wild pollinators. This certainly also broadens the support of residents in fruit regions: the grower is not a poison sprayer but has every interest in strengthening nature and making it work to his advantage. The fact that measures for pollinators and natural pest control are similar, strengthens the opportunities to further develop this. Following this project, two FWO-SB research projects were launched which are fully in line with this project, at Ghent University and at KULeuven. They also relied on growers who participated and the data of this project.

Achievements (NL):

De teelt van appel en peer is erg afhankelijk van bestuiving. De regio's waar dit project werd uitgerold betreft de belangrijkste productiegebieden voor appel en peer in Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het project stimuleerde telers om de bestuivingszekerheid te vergroten door wilde bijen in de boomgaard aan te trekken en populaties ervan op te bouwen. Zoals verwacht werden deze voornamelijk bezet met metselbijen. Het is niet zeker of telers in de toekomst nog voldoende honingbijen ter beschikking hebben (wintersterfte). Echter, deze metselbijen blijken in alle omstandigheden zinvol: bij koud of winderig weer vliegen honingbijen vrijwel niet, metselbijen wel. Het zijn tevens beduidend efficiëntere bestuivers. Ze vliegen ook op de peer Conférence in tegenstelling tot honingbijen. Meer bestuiving bij deze peer zorgt voor meer pitvorming, en zo voor een betere vruchtvorm en -grootte.Dit kon ook in het kader van dit project worden vastgesteld. Het is verrassend dat in elke regio deze populatie-opbouw zich erg gelijkaardig voltrok (spontaan vanuit de omgevende natuur). Zeker gezien het diverse soorten metselbijen betrof (de gehoornde metselbij in Vlaanderen, de rosse mestelbij in de Nederlandse regio's). De telers zijn moeilijker te overtuigen om bloemrijke heggen aan te planten, die belangrijk zijn om deze bestuivers in de boomgaard te houden (er dient voedsel aanwezig te zijn ook voor en na de bloesem). Dit komt vooral voort uit plaatsgebrek (elke m² is 'benut'). Bij een grondige inventarisatie blijkt dat dikwijls toch 'vrije' ruimte' voor deze heggen wordt gevonden. Door opsnoei in 'parasolvorm' is tevens weinig effectieve grondruimte nodig voor een toch wijd uitgroeiende bloemrijke heg. Het voordeel naar natuurlijke plaagbestrijders toe is zeker relevant: heggen zijn hiertoe erg nuttig. Dit zou ook als gevolg kunnen hebben dat omzichtiger wordt omgesprongen met gewasbeschermingsmiddelen. Dit kon niet effectief worden vastgesteld in het kader van dit project. Alle ervaringen vanuit het project, en relevante kennis uit studies, werd in een mooi verzorgde brochure opgenomen waarmee andere geïnteresseerde telers aan de slag kunnen. Er is evenwel nog bijkomende opvolging nodig om deze techniek op punt te stellen: de kastinhoud (nestmateriaal voor bijen, bij voorkeur bamboe) dient om de paar jaar te worden vervangen. RLZH zal dit verder opvolgen bij minstens 20 van de 30 telers van de regio de komende 2 jaren (2020-21) en zal ervoor zorgen dat deze kennis wordt verspreid naar de telers in de andere regio's. Ook de directe omgeving van de boomgaarden is mee bepalend voor wilde bijen: vnl. in wegbermen en tuinen is nog veel 'winst' te realiseren inzake stuifmeel- en nectarvoorziening. Het project bleek een ideale kapstok om gemeenten te overtuigen specifieke natuurmaatregelen te nemen in openbaar domein. Het project werd op een veelheid van evenementen voorgesteld, zowel 'professioneel' (naar fruittelers) als voor breed publiek: open deurdagen, bloesemfeesten, info-avonden, en 2 symposiums. 'Bijen en bestuiving' blijken een voorlopig blijvend 'hot topic' te zijn waarrond vlot een breed publiek gesensibiliseerd kan worden. Dit project biedt aanleiding om hiermee door te gaan de volgende jaren. De fruittelers met populaties wilde bijen zullen een dankbaar uithangbord blijven voor andere telers om met wilde bestuivers aan de slag te gaan. Dit verbreedt zeker ook het draagvlak bij bewoners in fruitstreken: de teler is geen 'gifspuiter' maar heeft er alle belang bij om de natuur te versterken en in zijn voordeel te laten werken. Het feit dan maatregelen voor bestuivers én natuurlijke plaagbestrijding gelijkaardig zijn, versterkt de kansen om hier verder op in te zetten. Er werden mede naar aanleiding van dit project twee FWO-SB onderzoeksprojecten opgestart die volledig in de lijn liggen van dit project, aan UGent en aan KULeuven. Deze deden ook beroep op te telers die deelnamen, en op de gegevens van dit project.
