Cultural heritage is at the heart of what it means to be European and it is being discovered by both governments and citizens as a means of improving economic performance, people’s lives and living environments. Indeed archaeological (arch.) heritage is also now widely appreciated as an essential part of Europe’s underlying socio-economic, cultural and natural capital. This is a significant change in focus as the protection of arch. findings and sites have traditionally been regarded as costs to society. Central Europe has a broad diversity of arch. heritage partly excellently developed and utilized. However, a broad share of this heritage - even of international importance - is very often hardly visible and tangible for the public and faces increasing menaces. In addition, inherent potentials for regional development lie idle and are waiting to become unveiled. But only archaeology, as prime owner of knowledge and information, may introduce those hidden pearls for economic use and implementation. Hence, Virtual Arch will contribute to a sustainable use and protection of non-visible and little known archaeological heritage underground or submerged by increasing the capacities of public actors in the field of archaeological heritage protection on presentation by introducing innovative visualization approaches and methods such as trend-setting ICT&Virtual Reality (VR) tools. This introduces hidden arch. heritage as stimulant for regional growth and employment in new industries. Efforts to address valorization of invisible arch. heritage via visualization cannot be taken by countries and regions in isolation if they are to be effective. Participating regions are facing same challenges and share same aims and objectives. However, local framework conditions, methods and techniques applied are still different. Transnational cooperation will support the development of respective solutions by development of standard procedures, common tools and knowledge exchange.

Achievements (EN):

Did you know that off the coast of the small polish town of Puck there was once one of the biggest harbours in the Baltic Sea? Did you know that Hallstatt is Europe´s oldest industrial zone? Did you know that there are non-visible World Heritage sites in the marsh of Ljubljana? Did you know that there are unique medieval mines beneath the german town of Dippoldiswalde? Although the rich and diverse archaeological heritage of central Europe is in parts known and excellently researched, a broad share of this heritage, even of international importance, is very often hardly visible and tangible for the public and faces increasing menaces. The VirtualArch project unveils regional archaeological heritage – located underground or submerged – to local and regional stakeholders that are responsible for economic development. Activities focused on the sustainable use and protection of non-visible and little known archaeological heritage by increasing the capacities of public actors and by introducing innovative visualisation approaches and methods. The project developed innovative and trendsetting visualisation tools in the field of virtual and augmented reality supporting both development and protection of archaeological heritage.

Expected Results (EN): R 3.2 Status of capacities of the public and private sector for the sustainable use of cultural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

Main result of the project is an improved capacity of participating institutions in the application of innovative ICT and VR approaches for presentation and subsequent unveiling of hidden archaeological heritage for subsequent use in economics, management of spatial usage conflict, regional identity and cultural participation. This will be achieved by targeting stakeholders responsible for the management and valorization of archaeological heritage across participating regions. To that aim, a transnational strategy including 2 blueprints will be elaborated by the PPs. The strategy will outline transnational challenges identified and solutions developed for better presenting hidden archaeological heritage underground or submerged via innovative ICT tools in order to unveil the heritage as resource for potential economic use and how visualization may support management of spatial usage conflicts and the promotion of regional identify and cultural participation. The strategy will be based on outcomes of development and testing transnational pilot actions as well as on trainings on human resource development and improving institutional frameworks. The strategy will be formally adopted by PPs who have the legal capacity or important influences on endorsing national, regional or local strategies on use and protection of archaeological heritage (all PPs except 2 and 4) in their territories (Saxony, Austria, Czech Republic, Province of Trento, Slovenia, Slovakia, Puck and Zadar).
