Description (EN):

ENTeR focuses on waste reduction to prevent depletion of non-renewable resources in the textile industry. It will strengthen the innovation capacity of textile companies in central Europe, improve sustainable links among industrial textile areas and foster closer cooperation on waste management and circular economy. The project partners are located in five central European countries with a relevant presence of the textile industry and with a national textile platform each. The project aims to accelerate cooperation between the involved textile territories, promoting a joint offer of innovative services by the main local research centres and business associations (‘Virtual Centre’). It will also involve public stakeholders in defining a strategic agenda and related action plan to drive circular economy considerations and actions. The approach of the project is oriented to the management and optimisation of waste, in a life cycle design (or eco design) perspective. The aim is to demonstrate the benefit of an operational collaborative model amongst research and business partners, based on an online tool and shared skills focused on waste eco design and resource efficiency. Information added on 2020-05-18, regarding the mitigation of the effects of COVID-19 (the coronavirus pandemic that started in 2019) (English language only): The dramatic increase in the need for single-use masks by the population produces a new waste stream for which the recycling potential is unknown. ENTeR partners apply their knowledge to this textile waste in their new pilot. They analyse possible sorting methods, dismantling procedures, cleaning treatments, and recycling processes to minimise the loss of non-renewable resources. As a result, a set of guidelines and best practices will fill this knowledge gap for local authorities, allowing them to adopt sustainable waste management models.

Achievements (EN):

The ENTeR project has completed its activities after three and a half years of work and is a good example of a project able to promote and encourage the circular economy and industrial symbiosis in the textile sector. Centrocot together with the partnership – composed of research centers and associations of companies/clusters of the textile sector, belonging to five Central European countries: Italy (Lombardy), Germany (Saxony), Czech Republic, Hungary and Poland – presented at the final conference of the project, held on November 10, 2020, the activities carried out during three and a half years of work. ENTeR, thanks to funding from the European Union, under the Interreg Central Europe program, has developed a system capable of enhancing the value of industrial textile waste based on the characterization and classification of their properties and using an online platform (M3P) for the matching of “materials and waste”. Specifically, the project has realized: – 9 pilot cases (IT: Recollection, recycling and waste management of stock, HU: 3D printing in textile industry, HU: Development of the waste management related in-house logistic system, HU: Wool Waste, DE: From residues to raw material, CZ: Generation of waste from manufacturing of technical textiles, CZ: Reduction of the waste generation through prolongation of the service life of textile products, PL: System of segregation and preparation of postproduction waste and ALL: Textile waste coming from medical devices concerning COVID-19 emergency) that represent models (Best Practice) able to bring textile companies closer and closer to a circular and sustainable economic model. – 5 training modules that have been organized to support companies in implementing circular economy actions. – 1 Collaboration Agreement, signed by all partners, to provide innovative joint services on circular economy and industrial symbiosis. The collaboration agreement has defined the actions to be taken to jointly support innovation in the textile sector. – 1 textile waste database (on M3P Platform): through the involvement of more than 140 European textile companies and 220 catalogued textile wastes, a database has been built that contains characteristic data (technical, chemical and ecological characteristics) of all materials/wastes produced by the textile companies involved. – 1 Strategic Agenda: a practical document that proposes a waste management strategy and lines of action to achieve an improvement in the consumption of non-renewable resources by promoting a circular economy approach in companies. – 1 Action plan that defined the actions to be taken to support the Circular Economy in the textile sector. In this context, the key objectives of the project have been achieved and ENTeR has shown that international collaboration has contributed to enhance the value of textile waste and, at the same time, to reduce the production of textile waste in order to prevent the consumption of non-renewable resources.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Status of linkages among actors of the innovation systems achieved through transnational cooperation in central European regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project aims to collect and group both waste needs from companies and technical solutions for recycling textiles from research centres. See a wider description of workplan in the Annex 1. The project will achieve the following results: - sharing of strategies, knowledge and common offer of research and innovation services, addressed to the efficient waste management. It is expected that at the end of the project all partners will sign the Collaboration Agreement, developed inside the project (A.T2.4, A.T3.2), - aggregation among the companies to solve common problems. Thanks to the investigation, research and on-field activities (A.T1.1, A.T2.2, A.T2.3) some common textile problems will be highlighted, diffused and communicate to companies in all regions. It is expected that the more awareness and the individuation of concrete and innovative actions foster the companies to aggregate themselves, promoting their competitiveness. (For instance, see document Annex ENTeR - Pilot Cases, that report some waste problems identified during the preparation phase of the proposal), - all the actors involved in the project (research centres, business associations, enterprises, public authorities) will be able to confront and operate with common territorial guide lines (A.T1.4, A.T3.3), thanks to the activities, studies and documents carried out and shared by all. Besides, the agreement among the partner will allow to update continuously these documents.
