Description (EN):

Green Infrastructure (GI) is a key strategy in the European landscape connectivity agenda aimed at reconnecting vital natural areas to urban hubs & restoring and improving their functional roles. Thus, GI is an essential planning concept towards protecting Natural Capital and simultaneously enhancing quality of life. This approach needs to be urgently implemented in Central Europe (CE) landscape planning policies, which seldom consider the ability of land to deliver multiple benefits. MaGICLandscapes (ML) will operationalize the GI concept in Central Europe providing land-managers, policy makers and communities the tools and the knowledge, at different spatial levels, that they need to ensure the persistence of GI functionality & consequent benefits to society. ML will deliver an assessment approach that deals with all spatial levels across CE landscapes types. ML will supply the tools for GI assessment at the transnational level ensuring cross-border GI is understood in a way that reduces mis-matched management approaches. It will provide territories with the means to assess functions of GI to guide planning and conservation approaches. Institutions will have the means to assess the public benefit that can be achieved through GI management approaches and demonstrate how these assessment approaches are used to develop evidence-based strategies and action plans. 9 Multi-scale and multi-thematic case studies in 5 regions offer the testing ground for our trans-disciplinary partner consortium to identify and feedback best practice for assessment, thus creating transnational added value. Outputs include a suite of transferable tools: a series of technical manuals & partner-level evidence-based strategies & action plans to direct future actions & investment. Training in the use of the tools will be provided for institutions inside and outside of the partnership resulting in enhancing the capacities of institutions to better manage our natural heritage.

Achievements (EN):

The MaGICLandscapes project has now finished. During its implementation, the project achieved all of its objectives. It introduced to the green infrastructure concept and its benefits across five central European countries and in nine case study areas. Throughout the project partners worked together in close cooperation with local and regional stakeholders. This collaboration aided in the refinement of the tools and strategies developed during the project, ensuring they were both useful and usable. This cooperation and the application of the tools developed in the project led to the production of nine Green Infrastructure Strategies and associated action plans in the nine case study areas. The flexibility of the tools which you can find here on this website are transferable outside of the project’s study areas, indeed they can be applied anywhere should you wish to develop your own green infrastructure strategy or perform an analysis of the green infrastructure resource in which you are interested. The wide variety of themes and priorities identified in the nine strategies further reinforces the transferability and flexibility of the tools.

Expected Results (EN): R 3.1 Status of integrated environmental management capacities of the public sector and related entities for the protection and sustainable use of natural heritage and resources achieved through transnational cooperation.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The MaGICLandscapes project will result in the enhanced capacities of 32 project partners to make informed and evidence-based management decisions for the creation, enhancement and protection of Green Infrastructure across the Central European Programme area. This will be achieved through providing the tools & the training needed to apply those tools to those stakeholder institutions operating at varying levels, spatial and administrative, of management and decision-making. Training for external stakeholders will be provided in 5 CE territories. It will also result in a raised awareness of GI, its functions and benefits, and how this can be translated into actions in 5 countries of Central Europe. Evidence-based strategies and action plans in 9 representative case studies, produced by the application of the 4 multi-level and multi-thematic assessment tools developed by MaGICLandscapes, will enable of institutions to adopt approaches maximising the multiple benefits that can be achieved through informed, inclusive, supported and therefore sustainable GI management for all. The change at the territorial level will be the ability of 32 institutions able to better meet their legal and national/regional policy requirements for environmental management such as evaluation & rationale for protection and intervention and meet the objectives of respective EU environmental strategies such as Biological and Landscape Diversity Strategy, Biodiversity Strategy 2020 and 2012 GI Strategy
