Description (EN):

Manufacturing is one of the key drivers of jobs and growth in Europe, highly concentrated in a CE core. Advanced Manufacturing (AM) technologies are a key driver of competitiveness in a lot of CE successful industries, contributing to retain talent and jobs in CE, against areas with lower labour costs. AMiCE will tackle three major challenges towards adoption of advanced manufacturing technologies by SMEs: access to knowledge, promotion of investments and competitiveness of these projects (return on investment). AMiCE will aim at promoting AM technologies in CE, focusing on 3D printing (3DP) and/or the application of advanced manufacturing technologies under circular economy principles. To do so, AMiCE will connect 5 innovation hubs in CE (DE, PL, SK, IT, CZ), where AM is a high priority in their RIS3, which will be represented through regional tandems of partners: business supporting institutions and leading universities. The consortium will also involve a top class partner from Catalonia (ES), reflecting the knowledge transfer with a leading region in this field outside CE, strengthening the connection with the European initiative Vanguard. The emerging nature of 3DP and the fragmentation of required knowledge across CE demand transnational cooperation, allowing for replication of best practices in different sites. AMiCE is structured into 3 thematic WPS, and will financially support the implementation of a knowledge platform, a network of shared demonstrators and pilot lines (showcasing proven benefits of 3DP to new end-user SMEs) and setting up a training and advisory programme to support the development of concepts and projects conceived by SMEs. The partners foresee to reach over 1200 SMEs in CE, actively support over 300 of those to adopt new manufacturing technologies through international cooperation. Additional regional funding as well as private investments and contracts will ensure long-term financing sustainability of the sites.

Achievements (EN):

Advanced manufacturing technologies are a key driver of competitiveness in many industries, which contributes to keeping skills and jobs in central Europe. The AMiCE project tackled three major challenges faced by SMEs when adopting advanced manufacturing technologies: access to knowledge; promotion of investments; and competitiveness of these projects. AMiCE promoted advanced manufacturing technologies especially focusing on 3D printing. The rise of 3D printing and fragmentation of required knowledge across the area demand transnational cooperation that will allow replication of best practices in different sites. The project connected five innovation hubs that prioritized advanced manufacturing in their regional strategies. A tandem of partners including a business support institution and a leading university represents each innovation hub. AMiCE developed a knowledge platform, a network of shared demonstrators and pilot lines highlighting proven benefits of 3D print to new end-users. The platform which also provides access to news, financial support and events is available in English and is published at www.amice-alliance.eu. The network of pilot lines and demonstrators is a service, which is one part of a complex transnational innovation support mechanism for manufacturing SMEs. t complements information- and innovation management services, tackles the issues of non-availability of research, testing and manufacturing facilities for SMEs and innovation teams in the fields of advanced manufacturing. In the same time, it facilitates the access to labs and specific expertise, which SMEs need for well-based investment decisions on new manufacturing equipment. The network constitutes from research and innovation infrastructures, which are open to share their facilities, equipment and know-how with partners from the involved regions and to join transnational innovation projects. In order to fill this concept with life actors from facilitators or owners of those demonstrator networks, research organizations, clusters, business support organizations were trained to operate and develop the network efficiently in 2-to-2.5-day pilot action training courses. In addition, the AMiCE consortium organized two innovator camps and collected 600 outstanding business and research ideas.

Expected Results (EN): R 1.1 Status of linkages among actors of the innovation systems achieved through transnational cooperation in central European regions.

Expected Outputs (EN):

The project aims at the achievement of 3 results: 1. improved strategic interaction and cooperation of the innovation service providers, 2. Improved transfer of knowledge between research and SMEs for the uptake of advanced manufacturing technologies, 3. The development of a conducive ecosystem for innovation in the fields of advanced manufacturing in CE. These results are well linked with the programme result indicator: Existing and new linkages will become more sustainable as they will be based on jointly assessed regional conditions and interests, common objectives, strategies, tools and quality standards. The actors will get access to up-to date and tailored knowledge and expertise on AM issues. That will provide an improved basis for the development of the European AM knowledge community and will help that each stakeholder can fulfil its role in the industrial modernisation. Partners and attracted stakeholders of regional and of the European innovation systems will get to know each other and will learn mutually in the common day-to day work. This is a precondition for sustainable and resilient linkages and continuous co-operations. The commonly developed tools and strategies will be that successful that the motivation to provide innovation services in a transnational scheme will be enhanced. The partnership builds on long-term already existing networks and contacts that project will be a next step to develop it further and to attract more actors to a successful team.
