Description (EN):

The DOMUS_CW project proposes the adoption of a simple, cost efficient and highly effective practice for the treatment of domestic/household wastewaters in rural areas of Balkan and Mediterranean (BalkanMed) countries, i.e. treatment via constructed wetlands (CWs). Two free surface flow CWs that have already been constructed in one Greek and one Cypriot community, will be modified and upgraded and will serve as case studies to be further optimized based on the model that has been previously developed by the team of LP. Through the systematic and detailed monitoring of the two CWs their operational efficiency will be evaluated, and the response to operational factors that have not been extensively studied yet, such as supply variations and recirculation, will be recorded and incorporated into the model. In addition, the effect and fate of xenobiotics, the interactions among plants and microorganisms, the toxic potency of effluents, the cropping frequency etc., will also be evaluated aiming to the better understanding and thus further improvement of the operation of the systems. An exploitation plan for CW effluents and plant biomass will also be investigated, aiming at the recovery of water and nutrients, contributing thus to the European goals for Sustainable Development. The main outcome of the project will be the creation of a generic assessment tool, a model platform via which the feasibility of CW technology application in different sites could be evaluated based on minimal initial data. This optimized model will be freely distributed so as any final recipient such as local authorities or even private initiatives in BalkanMed countries or any other country where the proposed technology is applicable at community level to be benefitted. The partnership consists of six partners coming from Greece, Cyprus and Albania that will cooperate closely in order to achieve the goals of the project. Those include the improvement of local capacity building in the BalkanMed countries in terms of sustainable infrastructure creation and also the introduction of wastewater treatment and water/nutrients re-use solutions that promote the local technical capabilities and thus ensuring their continuation and sustainability. Communication of project goals and results to stakeholders, local communities and the general public of BalkanMed countries inside and beyond the Projects area of activities. Among the top priorities of DOMUS_CW is the transfer of know-how and good practices in other Balkan countries, which will be achieved through targeted education, training and publicity actions. Thus, the project is expected to serve as the basis for developing common approaches and new cooperative schemes and also for the development of more progressive water use/efficiency regulatory measures and policies.

Expected Results (EN):

The expected results in correspondence with the aforesaid outputs of the project include: R1. Ensuring the sustainability and maintenance of the CWs, even after the end of the project as a consequence of the adoption of good practices based on low maintenance and predictability of failures due to external factors (linked to O1). R2. Free suppling and using/ benefit from the platform model, for any final recipient (e.g. local authorities, private initiatives etc) in BalkanMed countries or other region beyond those that has conditions where the -DOMUS_CW technology could be applicable at community level (linked to O2). R3. Τhe multiple direct benefits of the municipalities/communities participating in the project (Andritsaina/Krestena as a PP2 and Choletria via the participation of PP4 in the project) due to 1) the permanent infrastructure upgrading of their CWs and optimization of their operation, 2) the landscape improvement which promote the quality of residents life and 3) the identification via small scale, at site experiments, of possible solution for the CW effluents re-use, with subsequent environmental benefits (linked to O1, O3). R4. the spread out of good practices beyond the borders of the participating in DOMUS- countries via the training, dissemination and publicity actions (linked to O4).

Expected Outputs (EN):

The expected outputs of the project include: O1. Τhe improvement of the existing infrastructure in the communities involved in the project and the optimization of the operation of the respective CWs there, with the active involvement of the communities. O2. The creation of a software tool, a platform model that will be adequate for predicting the performance of different CWs and will be freely distributed in order to be applied for the determination of best wastewater management . O3. The fully operating CWs in Ploutochori and Choletria in optimized conditions and equipped with all the necessary monitoring devises that will facilitate their long time maintenance. O4. The transfer of know-how to other countries through the training actions (summer school) in which citizens of Bulgaria and FYROM will participate.
