The Danube River is a green lifeline for biodiversity. While the Network of Danube Protected Areas preserves the most valuable sites, habitat fragmentation limits efforts to preserve a cohesive ecosystem. DANUBEparksCONNECTED has initiated the DANUBE HABITAT CORRIDOR campaign to counteract fragmentation. It offers Danube-wide strategies and exemplary pilot actions aiming to restore and maintain connectivity in all habitat elements: The cross-sector Danube WILDisland CORRIDOR program protects the islands, which are flagship habitats for intact river dynamics and home to characteristic species. Copernicus Land Monitoring Services form the base of vital habitat connectivity in RIPARIAN FORESTS. Pilot actions will bring the satellite-based Danube floodplain forest strategy onto the ground. Natural river systems also host dry habitats, today often fragmented to isolated patches. DANUBE DRY HABITAT Green Infrastructure will be developed to foster ecological connectivity. Cross-border grazing herds will manage dry habitats and will test the long-distance functionality of the habitat corridor. Finally, DANUBE FREE SKY ensures collision-free bird migration along the Danube flyway. In cooperation with power line operators, technical solutions against bird collision with electricity wires crossing the Danube will be installed. Key stakeholders from waterway, forestry and energy support DANUBEparksCONNECTED, to ensure the cross-sectoral approach in all work packages. International institutions and policy drivers accompany the process and stand for long-term capitalisation of the Danube Habitat Corridor. CYCLING THE DYKE invites stakeholders and interested people to bike the Danube Corridor and to visit project results. Helping hands for the corridor management are welcome at the 1st DANUBE VOLUNTEERS DAY. The transnational DANUBEPARKS Network’s know-how and experience on the ground make it best equipped to implement an innovative project building on existing policies.

Bridging the Danube Protected Areas towards a Danube Habitat Corridor The Danube River is a green axis of life, hosting highly valuable biological diversity, and functioning as an essential eco-corridor of Europe. Sadly, fragmentation of ecosystems has become a major threat to biodiversity in Europe. When it comes to ecological connectivity along the Danube, Protected Areas preserve the most important natural sites. Transboundary conservation is crucial in protecting large ecosystems, which is why only transnational cooperation can restore and maintain habitat connectivity along the world‘s most international river. DANUBEparksCONNECTED presents an integrative approach that is key to developing Green Infrastructure. Strong partnership: Through two previous projects, the DANUBEPARKS Network has already significantly improved coherence in the management of the Danube Protected Areas. The partnership has focused on the protection of flagship species, the preservation and restoration of river dynamics, as well as strengthening nature tourism and environmental education programmes. This successful cooperation led to the foundation of the DANUBEPARKS Association. The DANUBEparksCONNECTED project, connecting Protected Areas from 9 Danube countries, launched the Danube Habitat Corridor campaign to counteract ecological fragmentation. Local pilot activities and Danube-wide strategies deliver important findings to improve ecological connectivity in the long term. The project’s emphasis on collaboration has involved various sectors, stakeholders and the local public. The support of partners like the EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) and the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) has further anchored the strategic approach of DANUBEparksCONNECTED as a good practice initiative on a policy level as well. Danube Habitat Corridor: Guiding Principles: DANUBEparksCONNECTED aims to establish and further develop the Danube Habitat Corridor by implementing best practice examples for ecological connectivity in all elements: DANUBE FREE SKY (air element), WILDisland (water element), Dry Habitat Corridor and Forest Corridor (land element). This is the driving force behind the development of the Danube Habitat Corridor Guiding Principles, which compile experiences from the project focuses and define follow-up actions. The result is an overarching guiding document for future activities concerning ecological connectivity.

Expected Outputs (EN):

THE DANUBE HABITAT CORRIDOR LAUNCHED BY POLICIES AND MODEL PILOT ACTIONS: Connecting 5 biogeographic regions, the Danube eco-corridor has become especially relevant due to the effects of climate change. This is the first Danube-wide concept for habitat connectivity to be launched. The DANUBE HABITAT CORRIDOR in water (WILDisland), air (DANUBE FREE SKY) and on land (dry habitats, forest) is reinforced by 30 pilot actions. DANUBEparksCONNECTED is anchored on the policy level by 2 strategic documents; existing policies are supported by 3 tools. DANUBEPARKS raised its capacity by 7 expert workshops and has the capacity to manage the eco-corridor. Cross-sector cooperation with energy, transportation and forestry is ensured by 3 interdisciplinary documented learning interactions, including 21 cross-sector events. 2 communication campaigns raise public awareness for Green Infrastructure and ecosystem services. 1 cross-over capitalisation process brings together relevant partner projects and multipliers on a European scale. As best-practice model for eco-corridors, DANUBEparksCONNECTED will enable other macro-regions to capitalise on its success. The Danube Habitat Corridor is a long-term process. DANUBEparksCONNECTED inspires at least 2 follow-up projects to contribute on a bilateral or multilateral level. Synergies by Green Infrastructure directly triggers follow-up investments into the eco-corridor approx. in the ratio 1:8 (e.g. by power line operators, waterway).
