Description (EN):

The 8 participating Geoparks are rich in geo-heritage and represent unique areas in the Danube region. Their sustainable tourism development however lags behind quality standards of top EU Geoparks. This project faces a challenge recognized by all partners: the sustainable use of the exceptional wealth of Geopark natural resources and heritage through sustainable tourism development that avoids the negative environmental impacts. The main project result will be joint Danube GeoTour designed to strengthen cooperation between the regions’ Geoparks and act as an innovative tourism product to accelerate visibility and tourist visits in the geoparks. Common strategy for sustainable management of tourism pressures will form the basis for creating innovative geoproducts. Sharing experiences, testing pilot geotourism products and new interpretative approaches should increase local inhabitants’ engagement, Geopark management capacities and lower the quality gap between Danube and other EU Geoparks.

Achievements (EN):

The development of the various GeoInterpretation sites and GeoProducts in each partner Geopark have been the main tasks within the project. The partner Geoparks from Papuk (Croatia), Styrian Eisenwurzen (Austria), Iron Mountains (Czech Republic), Karawanken/Karavanke (Austria/Slovenia), Hateg (Romania), Djerdap (Serbia) and Bakony-Balaton itself presented their topics. New visitor centres in Hungary or Slovenia, new thematic trails, GeoBiking, GeoRafting or GeoWine or just a few innovative outcomes of the Danbue GeoTour. Martina Stupar from the Institute of Nature Conservation in Slovenia highlighted the research and importance of natural and geological protection within Geoparks. The main project result was a joint Danube GeoTour designed to strengthen cooperation between the Geoparks regions and act as an innovative tourism product to accelerate visibility and tourist visits in the geoparks. Sharing experiences, testing pilot Geotourism products and new interpretative approaches should increase local inhabitants' engagement, Geopark management capacities and lower the quality gap between Danube and other EU Geoparks. Future collaboration and projects between the Danube Geoparks are foreseen.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

Based on a preliminary analysis and joint transnational strategic concept, a new joint Danube GeoTour will be established on the EU sustainable tourism market. It will be the first such targeted product and territorially based Geopark initiative in the EU. Danube GeoTour will be presented as a form of itineraries comprising new and unique geoproducts and attractive geosites of 8 Geoparks from 7 countries. Geoproducts will be based on the sustainable use of natural and cultural resources developed by local communities and made transferable among participating parks and similar territories. With innovative geoheritage interpretation sites, the joint Danube GeoTour will attract new audiences and promote visitor exchange. At the same time, pilot geosites will serve as future learning reference points for the innovative interpretation of the 8 most typical geological phenomena found in Danube region. Danube GeoTour will also intensify the quality of cooperation among Geoparks of the Danube region, their management institutions, inhabitants, visitors and other stakeholders by using new technologies. A gamification approach shall encourage local populations and visitors to engage, educate, and co-create products and to enable the marketing and evaluation of GeoTour. This will allow Danube Geoparks to strengthen their visibility and identity in the national and international context while cooperation in geotourism will bring socio-economic benefits to local Geopark communities.
