Throughout the Danube region, Art Nouveau is a defining feature of many urban landscapes. Art Nouveau movement in this area mainly stemmed from the Viennese Secession, prevalent and influential in urban planning and architecture at the end of 19th – beginning of 20th century. Secession monuments are generally revered as jewels of architecture, craftsmanship and art. Yet, their potential for becoming sites of vibrant communal life, as well as tourist attractions is often left unexplored and unrealized. As Art Nouveau is present in urban setting in many countries, it possesses cohesive force for connecting them. The partnership of 10 partner organizations from 7 countries in the Danube region recognized this potential. Responding to the needs for sustainable and harmonized protection, revitalization and promotion of Art Nouveau, this partnership devised a series of interconnected cross-sectoral activities covering the full cycle of its protection and revival. Museums and institutes for protection of monuments will undertake scientific research of roots and forms of expression of Art Nouveau, enhance its physical conservation and ensure its preservation in a digital form. Urban planning institute and municipalities will elaborate fact-based policy recommendations for protection and rehabilitation of Art Nouveau as well as its successful functional and aesthetic integration into urban setting. Complemented by carefully devised promotional activities and campaigns on local, regional and (inter)national level, such combination of activities will ensure sustainable management and revival of Art Nouveau heritage. As a result, its values and monuments will be revered and cherished by inhabitants, tourists and future generations instead of being lost to them as relicts of the past. Apart from its immediate and palpable results, this project will ultimately achieve an invaluable one: harnessing cohesive potential of the Art Nouveau cultural heritage in Danube region.

THE LANDMARKS OF THE ART NOUVEAU STYLE ARE GENERALLY REVERED AS JEWELS OF ARCHITECTURE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ART. THE TOURISM POTENTIAL THIS CULTURAL HERITAGE REPRESENTS IN THE DANUBE REGIN IS HOWEVER UNDERUTILIZED. TO CHANGE THAT, THE ART NOUVEAU PROJECT AIMS TO BRING IT THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES BY TRANSNATIONAL PROFESSIONAL COOPERATION. Art Nouveau was an ornate architectural style that flourished across Europe in the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. Although it can be seen in urban landscapes throughout the Danube region, its tourism potential is not explored. Together, 10 partner organizations from 7 countries designed a series of interconnected cross-sectoral activities aimed at safeguarding and reviving this unique cultural heritage. RESTORING ART NOUVEAU: As the first step, the partners conducted research in the field of conservation and developed a strategy with policy recommendations for stakeholders interacting with Art Nouveau heritage in the fields of protection, management and promotion. Alongside the research, several trainings were organized for Slovenian, Bulgarian, Romanian, Croatian, Serbian, Austrian and Hungarian Art Nouveau professionals. Besides, in 2017, the Museum of Applied Arts in Budapest held an international conference and workshop, the lectures from which were published in a book titled Restoring Art Nouveau: Architectural Decoration in the Danube Region. “Amongst [Art Nouveau] buildings, two stylistic trends can be distinguished. One uses geometrical shapes and draws on Viennese models; while the other is richer in floral ornamentations and motifs from local folk art. The first indicates the influence of Otto Wagner and his circle, the latter that of Ödön Lechner and his followers. The studies in this book represent both trends: Lechnerian Art Nouveau was most widespread in Subotica and Oradea and Wagnerian secessionism was more common in Maribor, Zagreb and Botosani,” explaines Gábor Nagy Papp, the editor of this 120-page volume. To support further research and to promote the heritage, one of the most comprehensive digital databases dedicated to the Art Nouveau movement in Europe was launched. The Art Nouveau Danube Repository contains over 17,000 digital buildings and objects, searchable via interactvie georaphical map, and also by the title, author, place and description. Some also contain relevant articles and publications, photos of the interiors and 3D models of the buildings. WHAT'S NEXT? Thanks to established cooperation, the partners in the project were able to identify many challenges faced by the communities sharing the Art Nouveau cultural heritage in the region. Hence in continuation of the project, Art Nouveau 2 focuses to enhance its public appreciation and to help boost economic growth in the communities by attracting tourists to visit the landmarks. It also aims to further strengthen existing institutional framework for better management and protection of Art Nouveau architecture.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The main result of the project will be the creation of a cooperation framework of relevant stakeholders from the Danube region in order to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills, expertise, and solutions, but also to generate mutual support in all aspects of preservation and management of Art Nouveau heritage. The result will contribute to an increased intensity of cooperation of the actors active in the Danube region by strengthening and intensifying the communication among the stakeholders. The project will create a platform which will encourage and facilitate the continuous exchange of information and knowledge among different professional organizations from various levels (local administration, academia, public institutions, NGOs). The established network will provide the framework for future, joint initiatives, which will capitalize on the best-practices identified within the region. Moreover, the project will extend the geographical coverage of the existing professional contacts in the field of protecting and promoting AN. New actors and new countries from the Danube region will be involved in the joint efforts of exploring and managing this valuable cultural heritage. Besides protection and conservation of AN, the project will initiate and develop joint instruments for promoting the AN on the level of Danube region. Hence, the partners will work together more intensively in mutually promoting their common touristic potential based on this distinctive element.
