Over the past few decades, European archaeological heritage gained major attention by connecting prominent archaeological sites to wider transnational networks, which have become a popular tool for their protection, promotion and tourist use. Imposingly attractive, however very fragile, prehistoric landscapes in the Danube programme area remain partly hidden and not well integrated into cultural tourism. The Iron-Age-Danube project focuses on monumental archaeological landscapes of the Early Iron Age, characterized by, e.g., fortified hilltop settlements and large tumulus cemeteries, from the era between roughly the 9th–4th cent. BC (Hallstatt period). At that time, the Danube region was part of a cultural phenomenon called the Eastern-Hallstatt circle. The project partnership consists of institutions with complementary expertise in archaeological heritage and cultural tourism, joining in a strong network of institutions and individuals dealing with Early Iron Age heritage. It will build on joint approaches for researching and managing complex (pre)historic landscapes and their integration into sustainable tourism. The project’s major innovation is the methodological shift of dealing with complex prehistoric landscapes rather than individual sites, therefore the partnership will develop new strategies and methodological tools for their protection, presentation and promotion. More importantly, they will not remain only on a theoretical level, but will be practically tested and implemented in nine micro-regions over five countries. For this process, international camps will be organized, closely linking research agendas with public events and new visitor programmes. All gathered knowledge will be published in landscape studies, which are the basis for a new digital application with interactive visualisations and augmented reality features. With this application and small scale investments, visitors will be able to experience our heritage in a completely different way.

IRON-AGE-DANUBE - DATABASE: It took longer than expected to develop the Iron-Age-Danube database, but finally the cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Science and the project partners worked out well: the Iron-Age- Danube database is now online!! http://www.interreg-danube.eu/approved-projects/iron-age-danube/news/new After almost three years our Iron-Age-Danube project (“Monumentalized Early Iron Age Landscapes in the Danube river basin”) is coming towards its end. When we started to prepare the application for the first call of the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme in 2016 none of the partners had a clear idea of the path this project will take us. So close to its end, I can say it was and still is an amazing journey full of interactions with many great colleagues and thousands of kilometres traveling between Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary. I am sure that the time, the work and the journeys were not in vain, as the results of our project can show. We started to prepare a project proposal as a group of archaeologists, enthusiastic for the research and protection of a very fragile archaeological heritage of the Danube region, the early Iron-Age heritage, which was known manly for his hilltop settlements like Kaptol for example and tumulus cemeteries like in Kleinklein. Modern archaeology has made a huge technological development in the recent years, which enables us to see our archaeological heritage in more complex ways. The focus has shifted. It has shifted from excavations of single sites to the research of whole landscapes. With laser scanning from the air, the so called LIDAR (Light detection and ranging), we now see things like communication ways, different kinds of smaller settlements, new graveyard structures, resources extraction areas etc. So, we can make a step forward from the understanding how people lived 2.800 years ago, and can now think also how they shaped and tamed their sorounding, their landscape. With our Iron-Age-Danube project we wanted to take the knowledge about this heritage out of the Ivory tower of science and therefore applied for financing in the Interreg Danube Transnational programme. Interreg programme enabled us to think beyond the usual “archaeological” box and “forced” us to define goals beyond the pure research. So, in our project we created a mix of activities, which include strategic plans for the future of the archaeological heritage, field research in selected micro-regions in four countries, development of a touristic application for mobile phones, new touristic routes with boards and a series of public events. Besides the events, publications, research activities and digital tools for me personally the cooperation between experts from different institutions during our international Archaeology Camps in Austria (spring 2017), Croatia (autumn 2017), Slovenia (spring 2018) and Hungary (autumn 2018) are highlights of our project. I think we all needed to learn, that despise we live so “close” to each other and regularly meet at conferences to exchange our achievements, we still can learn many things from each other and jointly foster archaeology in Europe.

Expected Results (EN): Intensity of cooperation of key actors in the programme area in order to strengthen sustainable use of natural and cultural heritage and resources (survey based composite indicator)

Expected Outputs (EN):

The major result of the project is to establish a tight network of key institutions dealing with prehistoric archaeological heritage in the NW Danube region with a case study on the monumental landscapes of the Early Iron Age, as this is the core area of the Eastern-Hallstatt-circle. Its most important goal is to support sustainable use of cultural and natural heritage and resources by developing and implementing common strategies for encouraging research, monument protection, presentation, promotion and integration of these prehistoric landscapes into cultural touristic itineraries. With such strategies we intend to raise the overall awareness for this fragile and unique archaeological heritage, improve protection and use not only of individual archaeological sites but whole (pre-)historic landscapes and therewith make it possible for visitors to fully experience and understand archaeological heritage. By involving the general public in understanding the past, an important objective of the Council of Europe’s FARO Convention (2005) and ICOMOS Ename Charter (2008), we envisage creating added value for the cultural and natural environment protection and the Danube region as a tourism brand. The key advantage of the Iron-Age-Danube project that guarantees its success and durability of results is the quality of the partnership, connecting major research institutions, museums and tourism organizations, chosen by their complementary qualities, experiences and knowledge.
